Arcadia of My Youth: On Captain Harlock and Romanticism | KYOTO VIDEO

KYOTO VIDEO finally delved into the storied Captain Harlock and his  cinematic 1982 origin story Arcadia of My Youth. A that film not only  wanted to show the beloved captain's beginnings, but also show us how  romanticism can flourish in a decade where sci-fi anime was growing  cynical.

Harlock's tale is definitely a romantic one. But for those who journey with him (and with Emeraldas and on the 999, it's really a kind of therapy. People get "onboard" with Matsumoto stories not to "complete" their plots, but to understand their lives. The Hero of 999 doesn't even get on the train until after he has hunted down and killed all those that killed his mother. The WWII flashback stakes out familiar territory for Matsumoto, but did you notice the shot after they crash land? Anno certainly did, he only "stole" and used that shot 4 or 5 times.. I once made a joke on a podcast (which we cut) that given the whole "therapy" angle, it was clear that Harlock was Mrs. PiggleWiggle's long-disappeared husband (who WAS supposedly a pirate). This whole, "fixing the hole in your life" angle is why Asuka gets more than a little fan art tying her to the Leijiverse (we figure she has had a ticket waiting for her for decades, she'll certainly fit right in..)
