One Environment in a Lot of Scenes

More boat stuff!
Didn't really know what to call this one- but this is what I've been doing most of the past month. Specifically- using one blender file to power a lot of other shots, so you can update one thing and have it automatically propagate everywhere. It's handy! And then I work through actually implementing it into a shot, cause the original video was too short.

Here are the downloads for the tools I mention
(go to Code, "Download Zip"):
The HDRI merge (and the other color tools)

I love that the ship is called the Slumgulleon. Our favorite made up stew meal as a kid we called, Slumgullion. A whole comedy podcast about it. https://podcasts.apple.com/ma/podcast/episode-6-pattys-eleven/id1511779622?i=1000473670432

So this is probably totally out of date to mention here, but if you remember the beginning of the Chronicles of Riddick, one of the reasons that works so well, is that the CG lights on the CG ship has raindrops to light up. So it's not a volumetric light, but it's light that hits particles in the air. It is very visually impactful and looks way lass "cliché" than big volumetric light cones. Somethign to ad to the Huberic arsenal, perchance? :)

He said 20 seconds per frame to render? How? What?

thanks

I just had the sudden feeling that I wouldn't mind "obnoxious boat rave" 1 hour loop. No idea where that desire came from.

Ian Letarte

Hey I been trying to figure something out since i started my membership it’s also the main reasons I subscribe to your Patreon how exactly to you color match the keyed out person to the scene anyone knows ?

Mamadou Mboup

Regarding the audio robot Ian, hmmm, it doesn't sound like reverb, it sounds like its doubled. with a slight delay. Are you recording with OBS ? check your audio inputs. and/or check your recording for extra Audio Tracks, im sure you did that, you know how video files work. Alternatively, you could record all the audio externally and just sync it before you edit. Great video, i wonder if the library link would allow for compounding animations like an AE pre compose. Also yes, we totally just wanna hang out . haha . . .repeated concepts aren't repeated content.

Tommy Shades

Is it possible that the custom config file's names are messed up, and "sRGB" isn't actually sRGB, and "linear" isn't actually linear?

Zeke Faust

Yeah! I think that would totally work! I should try that

Ian Hubert

ive had that reverby problem before and its usually because my screen recorder is also recording the monitoring of my microphone so it doubles. I'm super excited to see everything when its all done, youre really inspiring and every video and content you put out just gives me new understanding for digital cinematography.

Buppy Barnes

Just a thought on your material lighting -> local copy issue. Could you make a lighting "driver" bone to control the power and avoid having to make local copies of the materials? Might allow you to duck the whole problem of material changes not propagating.

Sasha Puppeh

Always nice to get an update from you! Like Platyelf, I probably find the robot cuter than I should. My unwarranted suggestion would be to look eyes of preys and predators, as their eyes are “designed” to serve different purposes (fight/flight). If the robot’s eyes leaned more on the predator side, it would be more menacing.

MightyFreshMeat

What's weird is it only happens sometimes?? 90% of the time the exrs import linear, so I assume it's an error on my end, and since it's easy enough to fix I've never looked into it, but yeah! It's weird!

Ian Hubert

as soon as I saw it it reminded me of a mantis shrimp.. which is kind of cute and kind of deadly

Arturo Leone

It's weird that you're still getting EXRs that seem to have an sRGB curve baked in! I linearize the exact same way, using a Color Space Transform and writing to EXR, and I've never had any issues like that. Could the R3D decoding be affecting it somehow? Something where the export ends up using different raw settings than the timeline? I don't really know how that'd happen, but it's the only thing that comes to mind. Or your Resolve project could be set to color-managed, with an output transform selected?

Carter Burr-Kirven

fantastic, needed this detailed explanation, thank you!!

Kieron Estrada

the only cg guy in town hit hard

Not Louiiis

The more I think about it, the more I want to make a plush version of it, I’d just have to figure out how to make a workable pattern with all those little appendages and find the right fabrics

Platyelf

Yeah! It means I can't do the "add a second camera that can look anywhere it wants" thing as easily, but I love being able to have it there as a reference (and interact with the path tracer!) while still being able to use the original footage in the timeline without it being looped through blender.

Ian Hubert

HAH! No I totally see it. Also the fact that in that shot it mostly just has curious "ooo what is THIS boat??" vibes.

Ian Hubert

And it's so nice to actually have all the extra on-set data for once. I'm working on the map room scene and I'm like "man I wish I had an angle of this" and it's there in your folder. Or like "I wish I had a lidar scan" and BOOM, we grabbed one.

Ian Hubert

Thanks for hanging out! I'm also the only CG guy in my little town. ¯\_ (ツ)_/¯

Miko Dela

SO COOL to see all the techniques merging together. Love this tutorial so much!

Blake Rizzo

It's so exciting to see things from the boat shoot finally start coming together!

Nathan Vegdahl

As usual, I'm speechless: being an aspiring filmmaker/ VFX artist, I always find myself second guessing myself and the quality of what I make. I hope you realize how COOL the things you create are. Bravo, Ian!

Armando Marchetti

Is it bad if I think the robot looks kinda cute? Like the big eyes are kind of like the big eyes of a puppy or kitten or something but maybe that’s how it gets you

Platyelf

The masking of the projected footage to not get double depth of field is really helpful thanks ! 🫶🏼🙏

rapha_foufou

Can't sleep so this is perfect timing 😂

Babe new ian video dropped 😭🤍
