Canceling my Adobe Subscription (and what I'm doing instead)

Extra video today: going through the process of finally leaving Adobe! They've got lots of cool tools, but they're raising the price again, and I think it's time to move on.

Canceling my Adobe Subscription (and what I'm doing instead) Canceling my Adobe Subscription (and what I'm doing instead)

Same here. Resolve, Blender, and Affinity tools and I haven't had to touch Adobe in nearly 3 years now. Loving every minute of it.

Koreanman01

Tried out Adobe when they came out with the AI image editing at the ~$10 photoshop plan but did not really like it, too used to Gimp. I got stuck with the 1year plan, used it maybe 10 times, and just ended it. I use Resolve Studio, Gimp, Rawtherapee, Blender, Krita and Armor Paint. Have the speed editor for Resolve which makes quick editing a breeze. Just bought a MoErgo glove 80 keyboard due to serious hand and wrist issues. Have it programmed with homerow mods (Alt, Ctrl, and Shift on the homerow of each side) so one handed shortcuts are a breeze. Adobe is the essence of Evil.. LOL

Christopher Marsden

You just conviced me to drop Adobe - I'm using Resolve, Nuke (learnng) and of course Blender. Bought the Affinity tools also.

SassmanUK

You can use vertical nodes in Fusion. Right click flow > options > build flow vertically. Also in Resolve they have a layout for vertical in Workspace > Layout presets > Fusion presets > Left Flow

Zeke Faust

ian,Do you know? It was because of your video that I started learning DaVinci. In the past half month, I almost forgot the passion of learning Blender with you, but it hasn't diminished. I plan to finish learning DaVinci within a month, buy an FX3, and shoot a few videos. Then, I'll come back and watch your video again. It's like opening Pandora's box. From you, I received a side quest. Looking back now, you are my superego!

MZZD

I am kind of surprised that you never had to learn Nuke when doing professional work. I am currently looking for ways to set up Fusion like Nuke because vertical nodes are better and Nuke hotkeys are A LOT better, but Fusion is convenient for quick stuff because I don't have to roundtrip.

Paul Pierantozzi

you might find something like this really handy for some of the cumbersome hotkeys in resolve. and with its layers system you could also clean up any other pain points in your workflows https://worklouder.cc/shop/creator-micro/

Luke Parker

I've been using Affinity for a few years now, and it has a very good counterpart to Illustrator for creating graphic designs. Since then, I haven't touched Photoshop or Illustrator anymore.

Philipp Weiß

IAN!!!! just as soon as I was thinking about throwing in the towel you come out with this amazing video, been doing my VFX colour correction and editing through Davinci Resolve for two years almost and been finding it difficult but knowing that theres always a way just makes me smile knowing im doing great in my own way!!! Much Love

Joshua

Ah yeah! I wasn't even aware of it until I made this post- it sounds great!

Ian Hubert

Hey Ian, what you are you are looking for in resolve is "start to playhead" and "end to playhead" shortcut: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EF_Wysanmn0&list=PLvonvrCx-qVLC90EPwGBw_C2D3CO15syL&t=235s

Frank Frohnhoefer

I have an old personal copy of photoshop CS4 from the "old days" when we sort of actually owned the software we purchased, and though it's a bit of a trial in the higher resolutions of modern screens, it still works for my purposes. I noted that there are still some copies of those old CS4 and CS5 out there on ebay, etc., though priced a bit exhorbitantly, but, well, if you've got tons of psd files it may be worth it. Best to you Ian from a fellow Washingtonian - I'm about 20 miles away from you and I know what you mean about the weather lately. Oh well...

Grid Mariner

Have you not thought about using affinity photo 2 as a replacment to photoshop?

Krellon

cool

园园儿 赵

Thanks for the video! just tested it and now i have two months Creative Cloud for free. 😅

Infinity_Reynolds

Depends on studio. But only gradually is the paradigm shifting atm. But it IS!

Lukas Sprehn

They really did not want you to leave lmao

SB-Boi

this may have convinced me to buy resolve :D

Ian Letarte

Davinci > Premiere in every aspect. Even Fusion rivals After Effects tbh (especially if you're used to Nuke's Node-based system)

Divdiv

Same case for me. Waiting to definitly leave Adobe for a while and Resolve really seems to be a good deal. It should be great to see more Resolve video here in the future if you're okay with that Ian ! In the other hand I'm still not convinced that Fusion can replace Ae in my workflow, especially after 15 years of using it... On of the biggest challenge to me in leaving Adobe is to find good Resolve API references and documentations to rewrite some of the tools a made with Ae scripts.

Simon Salord

Just a tip for Davinci + paying for the Studio option if anyone needs it in the future. Since the license is bundled with the hardware a lot and people buy multiple bits of hardware from them - people sell spare/extra Studio licenses on ebay for cheaper. I picked one up for around 60% the original price.

Matt

Agreed - AE is very unique especially. Most competitors to it are either good at vfx/compositing/effects, or really good at 2D animation/motion graphics. None really seem to get that combination of things that makes AE so versatile and quick to smash things together. It also feels like it gets slower and more buggy with every release too - so I really wish there was an alternative.

Matt

The masterclass yes, but really all the videos are worth checking out!

Zeke Faust

I also started using Resolve a couple years ago. For AE-replacement I want to do more in Blender (i.e. mask-based effects) but still don't quite know how to integrate into Fusion. Kinda craving the built-in transitions of the paid version tbh. Also kinda struggle with Fusion. If you have some suggested tutorials for Fusion that would be helpful. I have a really hard time giving up Photoshop too. And Premiere Pro, due to all my old project files.

Zach Hoy

Question how to get an image plain keyed out green screen to not have the lines on the edges and make it look sharp anyone knows ?

Mamadou Mboup

Plz share that tutorial that covers the entire editing workflow in davinci & fusion. Idk I always feel clueless in the program, or that i have 1000 possibilities that I'm not even aware of. Even tho I'm fighting through the +1500 pages of learning material they provide.

VoiD010AUT

It would be great if you could do a full Blender Fusion workflow video.

Kash

Blender and Resolve yes. There jury is still out on Affinity though. The other thing that got me was the Creative Cloud app and having to log in to get it to send you an email so you can log in. Creative Cloud was a hog that ate up resources and it does nothing! Nothing but manage other programs and keep tracks on you. Also, you can't just uninstall Creative cloud, oh no, you have to download another program that has to rip Creative Cloud out of your computer just like a virus. I believe we, as artists, need to protect art tools. Renting art tools is going to lead to the demise of us all, and the more it happens the worse its going to get. The other thing that happens is subscription models stop updating or improving their software. Look how long photoshop went without any significant updates, heck, they had to buy other programs because they get updates. Then they buy them and stop updating them. Adobe Modeler gets what? Maybe one update a year? We need to make a stand.

Joseph Ulibarri

You can change the settings so Davinci uses the Premier keyboard layout

Gabrial Wolf

I also learned on Photoshop, my first ever design software together with Cinema 4D (Maxon and Adobe have a little corporate inbreeding) Dropped both of them many years ago at this point, but I feel better than ever in Blender, Affinity and Resolve. Life after Adobe & Co is worth living :P

Chromfell

Thanks Zeke. There's a ton of stuff on that channel! I assume you're referring to the Masterclass though? This is the first video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BpMK-6t5Wqk

Jamie Dunbar

Check out the LeBuck's Ring tutorial series by the Pirates of ConFusion on youtube. A bit old at this point but extremely comprehensive covering nearly every aspect and feature of Fusion

Zeke Faust

I feel messed with, I thought the red frame had a hidden message and was important in some way.... no, it totally wasn't just random! :D

J McNulty

Thanks I used the Perception Neuron 3 but it wasn't setup correctly which is why some of the mocap is a bit weird

Mahdi Poursamad

Omg, what are you using for mocap? I was convinced the character was real for half the film purely because the movement looked so natural. Looks great :)

Jamie Dunbar

I've been slowly making the switch from After Effects to Resolve/Fusion too. It's definitely been a tedious process. Resolve is not intuitive and often simple things take me an hour to figure out. But it's slowly getting easier. Loved your keyboard shortcuts updates - I'll be implementing something similar! Do you have any recommended tutorial series for getting to grips with Resolve/Fusion? Would be very happy to take a crash course to get better acquainted.

Jamie Dunbar

Well, be more like Blackmagic except for the way they never document their stuff like you're supposed to (e.g. color spaces, supposedly "open standard" file formats, etc.). And maybe advertise/market more honestly. But yeah, ultimately I agree with you. As much as Blackmagic rubs me the wrong way in many respects, they're still far better than the likes of Adobe and other publicly traded companies.

Nathan Vegdahl

Hi guys, this is very recognisable for me hahaaa! Got rid of adobe and am using affinity now. Also, in our workflow we have been using SketchUp quite a lot along with the SKP warehouse. But after take over, after take over (currently being owned by Trimble) things are getting worse and worse. The warehouse has been filled over the years by its users and always had a very accessible and open character. Anyone could contribute and anyone could use its content. Not anymore…. And of coarse skp is now only available in subscription options, that are getting more expensive all the time. That’s how I ended up here and started learning blender with Ian’s video’s. Love it and thank you all!

Erik Reitsma

Yeah yeah!! For over a year now- it's like my favorite shot that I've ever seen anyone do in Blender.

Ian Hubert

But the klaxon is the horn not the light?

Platyelf

At night I read by the warm glow of the klaxon.

Ian Hubert

I enjoyed this, I've considered dropping Adobe ever since they moved to the subscription model. I tried HitFilm but it wasn't versatile enough (it's not bad though), and I've often looked at Resolve but it looked so different to what I was used to that I just kept procrastinating. Mainly I keep my adobe subscription for the rare occasions where I am allowed to work from home- but I would love to ditch it. Adobe, Maxon and other companies like that only moved to subscription so they can keep charging you for things you already bought and raise the cost anytime without upgrading the software. F**kers.

Pete Burges

The single biggest reason blackmagic can offer the value that it does is simple: it's a privately owned company. Adobe on the other hand, is publicly traded. It answers to shareholders (the biggest being Blackrock, Fidelity, SSGA and Vanguard), and therefore has a fiduciary responsibility to increase year over year profits at any cost whatsoever. That includes layoffs, buyouts, and eventually when they can't grow their market anymore, price hikes. This is what happened to netflix, they reached full market saturation and literally couldn't grow their base anymore, so the only direction to expand is to raise prices. Blackmagic on the other hand, has no fiduciary duty. They only answer to Grant Petty (and maybe an internal board), who has stated multiple times that he's not interested in maximizing profit, and that he hates subscriptions in general. Anyway the moral of the story is be more like Blackmagic

Zeke Faust

Son of a-- AGAIN?! FFFFF.... I'm torn, because on the one hand I am *literally poor*, but on the other...Lightroom is my primary camera app on my phone, and how I organize my thousands of pictures... And I use Photoshop and Illustrator constantly (As I have been since the 1990s) and have yet to find any of the alternatives satisfactory... 😫 They are starting to get on my nerves though... Today, I was editing some photos and encountered this piece of nonsense: They want to embed metadata in my exports saying they were made with AI, simply because I tried out generative fill to extend my photo backdrop. I am 100% behind tools adding metadata to *AI-generated* content, but there needs to be *descriptors*. What's more, is I feel like now they aren't going to improve the accuracy or quality of the existing Content-Aware Fill and Healing Brush tools, because they've added this. (And honestly, Generative Fill works a million times better for simple stuff than Content-Aware Fill ever did. 🤯)

Bakamoichigei

Judging by the state of your inbox, that email siren must be going off 24/7

Platyelf

So funny, I've been calling the CC suite "extortion ware" for several years now. Because literally, if you have a couple clients who use it and send files, you MUST subscribe as well. Wish I could cut the cord as well, though I do write the cost off my taxes.

Greg Tracy

I came here to say this! I use Affinity Photo, Designer, and Publishing to replace Photoshop, Illustrator and InDesign respectively and I'm perfectly happy!

timdan

The continual gouging of companies like Adobe seems to be alienating more and more people. I left the Adobe fold a couple of years ago for fixed price alternatives. And went for the same options you chose.

cdilla

I've ditched Adobe entirely and switched to Affinity for all my photo/vector/layout work and I love it! Affinity Designer having both vector and pixel layers has really changed my graphic design workflow

Olof Friström

Gutted I have to use Photoshop and Illustrator

Owen Tuson

Affinity Photo is a not terrible image editor with decent selection tools.

Michael Holtz

is your PC background a render by william landgren????

Fu Liu

Hey Ian if you go into your keyboard shortcut manager in Resolve there is a preset for Premier, so you can get all of the Premier hotkeys! Also I made a little blender short film, would mean a lot if I could get your opinion! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pHFidQbWut4

Mahdi Poursamad

I'm very happy you are making this move. Not because I dislike Adobe but because it makes it much easier to follow your tutorials if I don't have to use tools that aren't freely available. If it's not free then I'm a fan of supporting independent software developers who do non-subscription pricing.

Mark Pratt

Out of interest, what do you think this sort of software would look like from a Watsonian in-world sense? Does an entity like Adobe monopolise the software market for video editors, or have the people of your world come up with an underground open-source version?

Lewis Turner

I love Stream Deck for macros as it has display on every button and can have pages and folders. It's expensive, but not Adobe expensive. I just bought another one that has knobs, but haven't had time to learn it yet.

Avaruuskettu

Just a quick question, how did you rearrange the fusion page like that? :o

drmlord

I left you private message on IG with workaround for Adobe CC. Hope it helps!

Karolis Vitonis

I find it strange that people say Davinci is hard to learn - it isnt - especially if you edited before on any NLE. Edit one project with tutorials and you have basics covered. Personally, most annoying thing with Davinci is speed ramping for me - its like 3-4 click, I really wish they had shortcut lets say for 50% speed or custom percentage. Maybe one day… Other than that its great!

Karolis Vitonis

Great suggestion 👌

Render Revolution

I am not a film maker only make, animations and renders so it's only recently I have had to edit. I'm trying to get my rendering business up amd running and I made the choice of going with davinci now too. I really know this might be hard to learn but eventually I will succeed. After we hopefully see Mr Ian Hurbert fly through so.e editing in davinci. I have already learnt so much from you Ian amd I am forever grateful. All these large companies getting greedy now amd forgetting about all us smaller ones ( not me in particular but the ones who used adobe and built it to what it is today, just another money grabbing company. Soon we will not own anything ourselves. Anyway little rant over but seriously Ian all those files you have let's hope you get them all moves to your software of choice. Hey everyone else in the comments, what do yous all think?

Render Revolution

Ooo I've never even looked at Affinity! I'll do that tonight, thanks!

Ian Hubert

i started useing davinci because it was free and i did not have much money. And when i am now seeing people across the internet canceling adobe subscpritions i feel i made the right choice accidentely

Thijs Peeters

Lasst week I just put the actress in front of a white wall.( i have plenty of them in my flat😄) and the rest was very easy. But I think they are some ai website which are offering roto as well : https://borisfx.com/blog/top-6-ai-rotoscoping-tools-free-and-paid/

Fransoa

I honestly just got a little 9 button on off Amazon for 20 bucks. Honestly should set some blender stuff up to it

Lara StarSlayer

Oh that's smart! I always meant to set up custom macros and all that- I should actually get around to doing it one of these days.

Ian Hubert

AH YEAH! I've heard good things- I actually tried to test it out, but AE would literally crash every time I tried to open it after the update, so I haven't gotten a chance yet. I've been enjoying Magic Mask in Fusion/Resolve, which does some auto masking, but I suspect it's not a match for rotobrush 3.0.

Ian Hubert

I finally left Adobe when they started taking features out of Photoshop (the silly defunct 3d features they half @$$ed tried to implement for years) I wish I had purchased cs6 before they went subscription only. I had the suite for like 6 years? $60 a month x 12 = $720 year x 6 = $4320. What upsets me the most is that I have to spend years of my life building skills and learning this software. Photoshop was like the very first program I started learning but I can't deal with paying a subscription to rent a tool anymore. Gimp just pisses me off. Affinity Photo and Krita are OK but awkward. I've been using Photopea.com a lot lately.

Joseph Ulibarri

The only reason why i am staying by Adobe Is the rotoscoping 3.0 in AE. I think it is a timesaver in comparison to the greenscreen infrastructure & workflow. I‘d like Blender would have that.-:) Or do you know an alternative?

Fransoa

Resolve is great replacement for Premiere and after effects. Been using it for years. And Affinity is so good that my old office switched from Creative suite to affinity to save costs

Dimitar

This is the video i needed most today Lol!! Thanks Ian!

Nate Pantumsinchai

things like this is why I have a small macro keyboard. I hate playing twister on the keyboard with hotkeys.

Lara StarSlayer

+1 to photopea.com instead of the photoshop.

Đorđe Komljenović

I use Affinity Photo in place of Photoshop and have been pretty happy with it. Only snag is if you are a big stylistic filter user, you'll need to buy a third party solution of some kind, but Affinity uses PS compatible filters. I chose to use FilterForge, which I like quite bit, but isn't super cheap and they'll try to up-sell you quite a bit after you start with them. Affinity has good replacements for Photoshop, Illustrator and InDesign, and the whole suite can be had for a super reasonable price.

Clyde Duensing III

For editing tutorials I use Timebolt (I think I mentioned it already) seems like it's barely used but the two guys making it deserve some credit, it's pretty smart, it auto-cuts clips based on audio level, and let you remove or fast forward clips in one hotkey.

Loïc Bramoullé

Still super expensive even with a student discount !!

Dekker

It's so much every month! It also means, with the money I'm saving, that I don't feel so bad about treating myself to the occasional plug-in and whatnot.

Ian Hubert

AH! Thanks for that! I should compare that to what I have going on! There's a few differences that I'm still getting used to (biggest one, unexpectedly, is that if the timeline is playing and you click somewhere on the timeline, it'll just keep playing from that spot instead of pausing, which is weirdly frustrating??) and I'd love to not have to rebuild all that muscle memory!

Ian Hubert

Just started this video but wanted to say I'm also transitioning from Premiere to Resolve and I found this guy's video helpful. He has a free a preset you can install where's he's mapped the keyboard really similarly to resolve (with Q & W having the same function) : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-Ynu9chzrkE

Josh Bailey

I wish i could. Adobe has been going down the tubes.

Chris Roth

Yep! I've since moved on to using Photopea.com which is a beautiful and open-source replacement for Photoshop! Only thing I pay for is Substance but may not be using that after this year too!

SwaMusic

The inspiration I needed to see to do the same. Costing way too much every year already.

Chris Beaupre

I feel you Ian. I don’t like the subscription model companies and apps are going to.

Amenaru Gebra Bey

Man i’ve been thinking about doing this for awhile, maybe I will.

Corban scheid

It’s crazy dude, adobe is greedy company even charging for unsubscribing …

Rusta UZa

Omg so relevant! Thank you for taking the step. I will follow. This game that adobe is playing is too much :(

Frej Volander

Man I wish I could :-( I work in motion design, where illustrator and after effects are basically non negotiable
