Asset: Cargo Ship
Added 2021-08-10 02:16:54 +0000 UTC
The inlet near my house is used as an overflow area when the Port of Seattle is full, meaning every time I walk down to the water I get this cool view of these rad metal islands. I've been wanting to model them for a while (actually, I've been wanting to try photoscanning them with a drone, but they're parked a mile or so offshore, and I haven't been confident enough yet :P)
On an aesthetic note, I sort of walked the line between it being a proper cargo ship and a tanker (I think actual cargo ships tend to be squatter/wider), but this worked better as a one-size-fits-all for my purposes.

UNFORTUNATELY it's only for blender right now, since almost all of the textures are procedurally generated, and making an FBX version would be a whole additional project.

The actual deck of the ship isn't particularly well modeled, since it's usually going to be covered with cargo.
On that note, I've got the randomly generated shipping container asset from last year! Should work well with this!
Note: If you're going to use it in a scene, I recommend importing the "CargoShipAsset" collection :)
OH ALSO- the ship names/company change every time you duplicate the ship, and the hull randomizes slightly too.

The hull's got a lot of procedural stuff going on I'm really happy with :)

Also some subtle lighting for dusk (you'd probably want to amp it up a bit for a proper night scene).

USEAGE:
A quick note on usage of these assets (heck, basically all the assets)- you can use them in almost anything, commercial or otherwise, films, shorts, commercials- that's what they're for! You don't even have to credit me.
Just maybe try not to distribute the 3d assets themselves, cause, ya know (and if you must, and it's a format where the original textures are extractable, you gotta pass along the disclaimer from textures.com (although for that reason specifically I've tried to avoid using textures.com textures this past year))

Hey Ian, thanks man. I followed this, but was totally unable to texture it like you. I have searched your whole patron, but couldn't find an in-depth tutorial on texturing such a complicated object. will appreciate if you could do in depth tutorial on texturing. Or if there is one please let me know. The one with the cargo stuff is not covering much really Thanks man cheers

2021-09-22 02:18:41 +0000 UTCWait, won't it get stuck in the blend file and clog it until some other minor assets manage to drag it out of the way? π€£

2021-08-10 09:14:05 +0000 UTCAwesome work Ian, especially considering you didn't get to you photoscanning. On that note, somewhere in your town you're going to have a harbourmaster, they will know the Pilots that help bring those ships into the port. If you talk to those guys and offer beer or other supplies, will likely let you go out with them, get on board and introduce you to the captain who, again for beers or supplies, will likely let you stand on deck and run a drone program to scan the beastie. Sounds like a lot of effort, but it's really only a little bit of effort to introduce yourself and talk your way onto a boat ;-)
