Asset: Traffic Light

Alright! A follow up to the traffic light video last week! There's a lot of additional stuff I kept being tempted to put in here, but I already let it balloon to a bit larger than I planned.

Some different lights, and a variety of (questionably-implemented-but-surprisingly-functional) retroreflective signage!

Download (Right Click, Save Link):
Traffic Light Blend File
FBX (The FBX version is even more useless than usual here, since I don't know how to pack any of the functionality into it, but on the chance that the models are useful as a starting point for anyone for anything, here they are!)

I highly recommend watching the above video for a quick intro on how to use them- it's a more complicated file than usual.  My guess is 90% of the time folks are going to just want to append the "Sample Setup" into whatever file they're working on.

My computer's telling me it's currently 87 degrees Fahrenheit; time to finish reading some Neal Stephenson in the hammock!

Hey man! Make sure you are on Ian Huberts patreon page (not your main feed), then click on "My Membership" up top next to the "Feed" tab. There is a box with Discord information and a "connect to Discord" button. Enjoy!

Hello all, how do I connect to discord

Raf Stahelin

Ian, you're a damn hero! You deserve some sort of statue of yourself.

Amazing! Thanks Ian!

Thank you for helping me learn, Ian! These videos always point me to fun, sometimes scary, rabbit holes. :-)

Hey, I wouldn't mind a video with just book recommendations :-)

Jan van den Hemel

I can't believe i missed that! Thanks! I Also came across CamTrackAR that tracks your camera while you record stuff. Super handy i think! Im not sure if it works that well though.

wow, thanks for horizontal ones!

I do! Super super cool stuff, but I haven't found it particularly useful for production, yet (although certain things like being able to quickly scan a room is cool)- I talk about it a little bit at the 4 minute mark here: https://www.patreon.com/posts/tutorial-from-49849988

Ah yeah that's a very good point!! Also reminds me of something I completely forgot to mention in the video- there's another scene in there that contains the timing image, but if you want to make any tweaks to the image on your end it should be pretty straight forward! You could even just do it in MS paint or something.

Hi Ian, have you used the Iphone Lidar scanner for anything yet? I think i read somehwere that you have an iphone now. Im curious what you think of it and what you've scanned and used it for.

I think that traffic lights don't actually switch from red to green on a fifty/fifty basis. With each light change there is a period of time when all lights are red (based on the size of the intersection). This delay is to allow cars that are in the intersection at the light change light to clear before cross direction traffic starts.

Max Chandler

Oooooo dang that's a bunch of great tips thanks Nathanael! I might have to hop in and update the asset file!

Ian Hubert

Worth noting that if you really crank the multiply node it messes up alot of the timings because it cranks compression noise or whatever in the png up to bright enough levels to light the lamps - changing the traffic timing texture to non-colour and putting a (clamping turned on out of paranoia) greater than node with a threshold of >0 between the texture and the multiply node sorts it out.

Nate

Awesome! The traffic light segments on/off timing via b/w texture is OMG black magic to me, must study this technique. It's like visual programming with punch hole code!

German Bauer

That's for this. Definitely going to okay with making an intersection later tonight, with a store on it. As to a Neal Stephenson book, which one? Still trying to finish the Baroque Trilogy.

Fes

This is awesome! That code card reminds me of those old player pianos, like in those old Wild West movies.
