Double Monitor Monday!

So this is two videos in one, 1.) modeling a gizmo, then 2.) creating content for a gizmo's monitor (followed by modeling a new gizmo).

It seems long to me, but a lot of you have said you enjoy that, sooooooo- hopefully that's true!  (there's also chapters down on the timeline if you want to scrub around).

(Also look I've never seen Knight Rider okay I'm sorry I thought it was the Bat Mobile).

Also be sure to check out 42:18 if you want to see me lose 40 minutes of work cause I never saved!!

Below are some pictures from what we get up to.

You can recover work lost work by Clicking auto save instead of last session and just click the most recent file. It's saved me hours a few times. You can also change the interval of time between auto saves. I have mine set to something like 2 minutes so I never lose much work.

Arch

Thanks for this, very enjoyable to follow along with. (But I saved my work.Haaahaaa)

Maury Rosenfeld

Losing work like that and being unable to "recover last session" happened to me as well, but I found out that navigating to the folder where the autosave files actually are worked, it was all there! You might still have it!

Davide Bertolini

Seconding this, I've used Recover Auto Save to avert catastrophe in situations like this many times. It's godsent.

Jonathan

i hate when that happens:(( you kept your spirit up tho! inspirational:))

trym ruud

13:15 you can use Ctrl-G to select all the co-planar faces.

Paul and Anna Spooner

Hmm. I'm fairly sure that Recover Auto Save would have solved the thing at that crash, right? Apart from that (or specifically with that) it's great learning as usual!

oh man...seeing the facecam reaction of a man who did not save seriously hits hard. At least I know now that even the most talented are cursed with human error.

Sam Schippers

ha ha not to me it's not!! :)

Doug Brown

Oh thanks!! Me too. And I was a little worried that it wouldn't fit into the edit, because I pushed it a lot further than usual, but it's a comfortable edit :). I love being able to dump a bunch of time into a shot just to slip it into an edit and have the whole thing get recontextualized :D

Ian Hubert

Because of the bad topology?? It's not that bad, is it?

Ian Hubert

"It seems long to me, but a lot of you have said you enjoy that" oh 100000% yesss, an hour long video was an absolute joy to wake up to. Seeing you lose your progress broke my heart though D: even if it's relatively not a lot of progress lost it can still hurt, but it's still really impressive how amazing you're able to make your scenes look :)

Ozzie

Ah it's true!! In this specific instance, I didn't do that because I wanted it to affect the other two buttons, to either side of the central buttons, so I could get a single curve. Connected only has been a lifesaver, though!

Ian Hubert

Haha yeahhhh, not the most realistic. My in-world rationale was that each monitor only lasted a week or two, and then he just swaps em out with old ones he gets from a dumpster (which is why one of the screens has a busted screen). That said, I'm totally tempted to come up with some grungy grease-clump nodes and pop them over the top of all the materials- I definitely think it'd help sell the scene, yeah :D Hope the smoke bake went well!!

Ian Hubert

Fun thing to watch while I'm baking smoke... :P Also as others have said, frying stuff makes a mess https://www.yourlocalpaper.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2018/12/dirty-fryer.jpg Beautiful looking shot tho. Very very good work. :)

Ian Letarte

watched this while drinking out of my Holland mug, love it!

What is definitely missing here: dirt! Lots of it. If you would steering fried stuff near these, they will look like sheit in no time. :-)

Love it! Game 3D artists are having pains in their left arm at this point :) ;)

Doug Brown

Ooh yes, modelling gizmos. I'm saving this for tonight.

Zachary Macintyre

that final shot is one of my favorite things you've done. holy kamoley that looks so cool

it's that guy!

I know!! I checked everywhere, but it's a little hit and miss if you haven't already saved the file somewhere (the autosave directory had SOME unsaved files in there, but not mine? Very weird).

Ian Hubert

I am sorry for the crash but this is still great content. Thank you.

Man, I chose watching this full video over sleep when I have work in the morning. I'm now contemplating my life choices

Evan Barron

You should've been able to recover the autosave :\

Recover > Autosave!

Ian i think you might find it handy to toggle "Connected Only" when using the proportional editing tool, it will stop you from having to hide everything when you're shaping linked verticies like the knobbies on the side!

LtTim

I felt that crash in my chest, feels bad man! Great stuff as usual, happy holidays!

martin åberg

I was skipping around the video when I saw the Blender crash and thought "oh no! hours and hours of work gone!" nope just 40 minutes :-|

Thanks bro 🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾 for the video

Patrick Lever

Patrick Lever
