#133.3 - Advanced Ear Training 1
Added 2024-12-14 15:00:11 +0000 UTCMy fellow bassists,
This ear training exercise uses only notes from the G Minor pentatonic scale - G, Bb, C, D and F. Listen to the guide track, and try to play back what you hear, and just bear in mind that every note you hear will be one of those in the pentatonic scale! So no shifting is needed at all, if you're using one finger per fret.
Have fun!

Ooooo yeah that makes sense. Playing from your mind. Shoot there's dreams I occasionally have of amazing music that I wish I could transcribe

The end goal is to be able to play it back perfectly after hearing it only once, but you can still get a lot out of this if you keep doing it over and over until you nail it. There are many benefits of doing exercises like this. Like you said, it helps with transcription but it also allows you to "play what you hear". So with enough practice of these exercises, you'll be able to hear bass lines in your head that can go with the rest of the band, and actually be able to play them perfectly rather than stumbling around.

I feel like I got most of it, but definitely couldn't get the second half of this 3rd exercise perfect on my first try. Obviously this kind of thing will really help with Transcription, but outside of that, is perfect recall and accuracy necessary? Or is the goal to be able to follow something roughly accurately, or at least the same "feel"? I imagine that in music school you're graded on the expectation of perfection, yeah?
