The Legend of Vox Machina S1 E7-9

Comments

@54:40 "should directors and animators have to keep in mind that some people will be watching in sub-optimal light conditions" Yes, absolutely, and as someone who went to school for post-production (primarily vfx, but some editing/mastering) things are indeed. Theatrical releases are often mastered slightly differently than bluray releases, for example, because theaters are a known-factor generally. I would argue however that "I have 5 studio lights blaring into my face" is a bit of an edge-case to factor for compared to the large number of "I have windows in my living room" crowd that makes up the majority of non-cinema viewership.

You out have put the song in the patron no problem, Sam and Travis are huge reaction fans even giving the episodes early to reactors, and it is sams song so it's absolutely fine

Drake

1:38:14 That moment when Archie's Dead Wifing registers with Mortius

Sarah Neely

LOVE the Firearms rant because that is SO freakin' fair. And I love that you think about things so deeply.

Sarah Neely

Fun fact: In their home game (C1 before the livestreams), Pike actually *did* die already to a demon that had trapped Sovereign Uriel's family. That's how they originally got the title of "Protector's of the Realm."

Nathan Lehenbauer

Grog is a Path of the Berserker Barbarian

Smiling Game Master

All of Pike's super powers in astral form are due to her being at the temple. The priestess said that the chamber she's in is a conduit for "more power than anyone can handle alone" (ish).

Korine Fideler

So glad you got the “Whack it off” joke! 🤣🤣🤣

ELS_Art

I cannot wait for you to see all of Vox Machina and She'ra and Mighty Nine! If you are also going to do movies I would love for you to check out Cartoon Saloon movies! Wolfwalkers is one of my all time Favs and not enough people know about it! The art!!! Ok focus on Vox Machina now!

Phamy Caint

Also, Grog is a Berserker subclass iirc.

Cara Freya Hoglund

"Scanbo" is a great episode from the campaign to watch, if you have a few hours :)

Cara Freya Hoglund

I really shouldn't get into this in patreon comments, but no, this isn't the right take... "humanity is the mistake" actually often ends up being a talking point towards Eugenics and people should be very careful about falling for it /gen /info /nm

Mortius

I'm pretty sure I can track the subconscious trail that gave you Elijah instead of Archibald. Forgot Archie's name->voiced by Dominic Monahan->Dominic is Merry->Merry is in LOTR->Frodo is played by Elijah Wood->character's name is Elijah?

Kerri Kortness

You and I had the same initial thought about barrel number six. Also...do you watch any of Brenan Lee Mulligan's campaigns? Capitalism is ALWAYS the badguy. Lol

Imara121

Taliesin's lines are so quotable. XD

Marguerite McBee

Yeah!! React for Patreon!! XD

Marguerite McBee

16:11 That would be a heartbreaking situation, wouldn't it? :(

Marguerite McBee

14:23 Nothin can be un-invented - you're absolutely right, and that is an ethical dilemma addressed in the campaign, though I'm not sure it shows up in the animated series.

Marguerite McBee

I do not Agree that Firearms should have never been invented, I firmly Believe that Humanity in itself is the Mistake, we should of never been created as there are much more naturally "Evil" Humans than good, at least from my own Experience, Firearms are a Branch Humanity is the Root

DPMAN

Your takes on Percy and the pepperbox are so correct actually, both in and out of universe

In the campaign, Scanlan got through Vedmire's entire house intact before realizing he didn't have any spells to create fire, or even a tinderbox. But while the other players were howling with laughter at how the mission was doomed from the start, he found a potion of fire breath in his inventory.

Archie IS a red-head

Ink Inc

In a way the dice were right with the Archie death. He didn't sacrifice himself (as you asked them), he intervened and then died in the resulting fight. So then 12 for that question? I'd say you're dice might be magic… Now that you've seen a bit of the Briarwood backstory: Delilah already had her powers back then. And Silas vampiric version was clearly made by her. And they showed her hugging a nothing in the mirror... do you still think both of them are vampires? I'd like to point to the moment in episode 3 when they walked to their rooms and we saw a short glimpse of their reflections in the mirror … or lack of certain reflections… The Pike vs. Zombies awesomeness is a culmanation of timelines. Originally it's Matt honering a nat20 of an athletics check of Pike (if I remember correctly) jJumping down a wall in order to cast destroy undead - which turned into fucking everyone in that alley died damn the range! And her getting the how-do-you-wanna-do-it on the undead giant with her mace attack in that same fight. Then the movie happened. Then the show happened. So some artistic inspiration is definitly possible!!! I do not understand the idea that you can eat too many potatoes... it's a superfruit! While I certainly eat too many chips, because I have a problem... If you eat other stuff next to it, there is little chance you eat too many potatoes. It's declared to be a super fruit for a reason! That being said. Do eat cauliflower - it's also really good for you! And the mashed mixture actually sounds really good and I will totally try it. BUT have you tried cauliflower falafel? They're fucking amazing! And imo way better (and most importantly less dry) than traditional falafel

PumpkinSparks

I understand what you're saying, but I am one of those people who as a default has all their screens set up to the highest brightness possible. And still there are so many movies and shows where I have a lot of difficulties seeing everything that is happening. And sure, I can see some genres whre that might be intentional like some artsy dramas to make things super moody, or some horror where they don't want you to see everything to make it more immersive. But I watch a lot of actiony stuff and one of their selling point is the amazing fights - why would you not want us to actually see it?!?

PumpkinSparks

The trap Grog ran into in Scanbo, technically didn't happen but did happen kinda. The thing is, yes Grog can take a lot of damage cause he tank, and the moment he rages he obviously can tank even more. BUT that specific trap did happen in game at this time, but with Scanlan. The whole Scanbo thing was a bit different (just as epic, even more chaotic! oh please check out that bit!!!) but basically he didn't know what to expect or how to get through the door, so he just polymorphed himself into a triceratops and barged through the door and got greeted with a gazillion arrows... they kinda split that moment up

PumpkinSparks

Regarding 54:54, I'd argue that while there are many movies and shows where brightness balance and contrast are abysmal, there are also many instances where the onus of responsibility for viewing experience lies with the viewer. Many issues of visibility can be resolved by tweaking the settings of your screen based on your specific viewing situation. In the case of phones, since the screen can't be as heavily tweaked as a monitor or TV, I'd argue that streaming services should feature basic contrast and brightness features at minimum.

Zufar Ahmed

Dunno if anyon'e commented this yet, but if you want a super fun 4 mintues, watch the video called " vox machina vs the army of undead but holding out for a hero from shrek 2 is playing" by senjuwu on youtube. It may be the only way to make Pike's entrance even better?

Aubrey

Waaiit no I love Scanlan's Pike song!

Tom Kaplan

I think one of my favorite things is you can hear the original tabletop campaign's opening theme in the Anders fight and as someone who watched C1 live it just makes my heart swell to hear it. (At about 1hr4m30s in the Patreon video, or approx 11:15 in the actual TLoVM ep.) "You're the face I saw when murder entered my heart" was a real thing Taliesin Jaffe said improvised at the goddamn table because his one-liners ability is BEASTLY. If Percy has a sick one-liner in the show there's a decent chance he improvised it at the table first. ... Unless the line is "life needs things to live" in which case the table & extended friends of the show shall mock him until the end of time. I LOVE THE EVERLIGHT SO MUCH. "You can be whomever you want to be in the light, so long as you walk your path with truth & compassion." The complex love-hate sibling relationship between the Everlight, the Dawnfather, and the Lord of Lies in CritRole and the lore behind it is just. Something I am 100% Totally Cool And Normal About I PROMISE. PIKE "MONSTAH" TRICKFOOT!!

amBarthes

Yesss this! I love that "you can't uninvent something" really is the whole point of the pepperbox.

amBarthes

Agreed - I think there is an issue with a lack of contrast that we've seen in movies/television in recent years (that whole Wicked debate was very enlightening), but I never had an issue with Vox Machina. *shrug*

Yara Kaas

ad brightness - it can be a problem in modern filmmaking, but I don't think LoVM has fallen quite so heavily into it? mostly the contrast is done reasonably enough. I would agree that there should be better regulation of brightness/contrast in our devices or in the streaming platform toolset, so that we can compensate for different environment/modes of watching, though.

Fun Facts of the Day: - Residuum, when is was introduced mechanically, could essentially replace any Spellcasting component (for example, the Revivify spell requires diamonds worth 300 gold, but a certain amount of Residuum could be used instead.) - People have mentioned Percy's big gun being called Bad News, but his pepperbox also has a name: The List. - Scanbo! This was one of the most exciting sequences of the campaign, and the show definitely delivered. - Grog is a Berserker Barbarian. Man's whole thing is just blind rage, get hit and hit back harder. - DICK LIGHTNING!!! Ep. 7 is really just an episode of Scanlan's Greatest Hits. - Because of Ashley's frequent absence in the campaign, the show took the opportunity to really flesh out Pike's story, so A LOT of Pike's stuff this season is completely original! - I love how they portray the difference between Cleric and Druid healing. Keyleth uses herbs and dirt and green magic to close wounds, instead of pure healing light like Pike. - No Mercy Percy one-liner number 2: "You're the face I saw when murder entered my heart." Another line taken directly from the campaign, Taliesin is so good! - This was Keyleth's first use of the Skywrite spell in the campaign! She uses it to make the De Rolo Crest in the clouds as a symbol of the rebellion. - Now that you have this backstory, I think it's safe to say that despite the very reasonable assumption, Delilah is not a vampire, only Sylas. In game, Delilah is mechanically a Necromancer. - Yeah, Archie's death was a big shock. When they made such big changes to his character for the show, people thought he was going to stick around as an important character. - The astral projection was a fun way to reference Ashley having to video call in when she was away but wanted to play in the campaign. Any time that happened, she just "astral projected" from wherever she was. Great reactions as always! Can't wait for the rest of the season

HamboneKablooey

Grog is a berserker barbarian. He also has an intelligence of 6, he knows what he's doing

Izzy Lae

YESSS. I'm so hyped for more of this show. It's so nice seeing someone who is really into DnD react to this. I'm glad you're also getting into the other poll shows quickly, too. It's really awesome how you're giving everyone what they wanted, even if the show didn't come out on top.

Chimpman

Grog was a Berserker Barbarian! I don’t remember this in full detail from the campaign, but I don’t think him surviving an absurd amount of hits is entirely a show invention. At this point in the campaign, they were actually pretty decently leveled, and barbarians can absorb fucking everything. Like once they start getting up into the hundreds hp wise it can take a damn miracle to bring them down to even half against non-spellcasters. Signed- dm who just recently did a final boss battle featuring 3 barbarians.

Petalstripe

For your information as this is not a spoiler the Gods names you have heard so far are The Dawnfather = Pelor, Everlight = Sarenrae and the Whispered One = Vecna. Names changed for copyright.

Corvacks

The rifle Percy uses on the undead giant is called Bad News, named after the phrase “Bad news travels far and fast” which is cute

Jordan Leigh

Your discussion on firearms being invented is perfect, because that it exactly what Percy’s creator was going for. Taliesin (Percy) has spoken many times how his inspiration for Percy was trying to come up with the messed up person who would invent one of the most deadly weapons in history, and the ramifications for doing so. As you said, you can’t un-invent something Not exactly a spoiler, but even in campaigns years down the timeline, whenever a character has a gone and uses it for something bad, all blame immediately goes to Percy, which is fun

Jordan Leigh

My mouth does get real particular about “texture=taste” so trying mashed cauliflower I had the literal “if not potato, why potato shaped?” reaction and couldn’t get into it, so lacing it with actual potato does sound nice

champagnia

Correction Sam did not know he had a potion of fire breath, he was searching his inventory for anything flammable when he found it.

NERD!

For Scanbo - this is adapted from a real combat in the campaign, although it went slightly different. In the campaign, Scanlan/his player already knew he had a potion of fire breath, and there weren’t potions for teleportation and shrink. Something I prefer in the campaign version is that Scanlan is so much more on top of everything that’s happening lol. In the show he’s kind of bumbling is way to victory, but in the campaign he was just demolishing everything and going “okay I’ve probably done enough, I should go now right? …but I’m having so much fun! I’ll stick around for another round” repeat that like 4 more times lol Triceratops Scanlan lasted longer and did more damage in this adaption though, so that’s fun. He was also able to transform in the show due to the scroll he was messing around with a few episodes ago that turned him into a frog and a woman

Jordan Leigh

Right as I finished ep 6!!! Yesssssssssssss

LavendersBlues

In answer to your question: Grog was Path of the Berserker Barbarian. Also the Briarwood/Whitestone arc happened in late 2015, Infinity War came out in 2018 Pike's Astral Projection is genuinely one of my favorite "in jokes" because in the actual campaign, Ashley Johnson could rarely be there in real life because she was filming Blindspot at the time, but she would occasionally skype in for big moments like this.

Time zones are so weird...im in Germany and here its 2:00 at night right now and i was thinking: "im gonna get to bed....oh never mind...sleep can wait 2 hours"

Marius

Dropping this literally 20 minutes before I start work is a crime against me specifically and I will have my vengeance
