STARSHIP | Act 1 Parts 6-10

Okay so this show is actually peak

Comments

1:03:55 you react to Up trying his best, but my brain called it the same button as Jafar saying "You only try to poison me when you want to talk." XD

Marguerite McBee

As you were transitioning from parts 8&9 to 10, I realized that Mega-Robot can't kill people, but she could use mission objection success as a means by which to abandon the team to be killed. There has to be more Robot shenanigans with Junior in the next act, right?

Marguerite McBee

It can have some slow moments, and some bits that don't always hit but the music, the core bits just the overall vibe it's so good and so hard to get people to give a try to. I'm so glad you're enjoying this, I'm glad you're also bringing it to new viewers! And yeah Taz is an homage/reference to Alien (along with the much much cuter chest bursters) Obviously you noticed Solid Snake there, and Ursula/the eels as Pincer and the mosquito bro's (and sister) call It's such a nicely done show. The phenomenal puppetry, the absolutely amazing singing. Dylan just being Dylan (seriously how LONG he held up that puppet while singing one of the best songs Starkid has done) All in character voice? And then switching seamlessly back to such a different voice just a little while later for Tootsie? Such good actors everyone. Also I don't know if it's already been pointed out but the caller bug was played by Nick Lang :D This has been a joy to watch and I can't wait for the next parts whenever you have some time to get to those.

Silvered Fox

I am so so so happy that you're enjoying Starship so much! Its an older show and it's not really winning any awards in comparison to Starkid's other shows (minus the absolute best villain song Kick It Up a Notch), but it's absolutely my favorite. It just has such a heart to it where you can't help but smile, and all of Bug's songs just speak to me so much personally 🥹 so I'm so glad you're enjoying it too!

SummerSoulsandStars

Yeah, Kick it Up a Notch is one of the best things Starkid has ever made

Addy0302

Oh man, as someone who did in fact love Rooster Teeth back in the day that hits hard LMAO

Myeh

That makes so much sense. I love the soundtrack.

Shantel Lipscomb

Pretty sure I did try to warn you about Pincer way way back when you first started reacting to Starkid and were wondering about which shows to watch after you finished Twisted... but I see now that it probably would have been a good idea to bring it up again, once you actually started watching Starship. Sorry about that, good thing Kick It Up A Notch is good enough of a song to distract from the Giant Alien Scorpion Puppet taking up half of the stage

Cinnamoone

imma be so real, i forgot pincer was a scorpion. i thought he was a crab

Ratatosk Clarke

omg,,, is it time for peak,,,,, i think its time for peak,,,, KICK IT UP A NOTCHH!

Ratatosk Clarke

51:50 pincer says they quite literally almost ate him alive bc he was almost nurishment for the overqueen! edit: edited the typos bc wtf is nutriment lol

Chris

Also - Darren Criss wrote all this music!!!

Kate Murphy

Taz is a spoof of Private Vasquez from Aliens. The joke is that the character was played by a white actress, so Lauren is playing her here (although Lauren’s father is Mexican so at least the joke isn’t so awkward).

Dave Ballinger

Aren’t you forgetting Me and My Dick lol?

Dave Ballinger

this is giving blue people avatar a bit

Enby_Ember

Two of my favorite songs from Starkid are in this video, kick it up a notch and status quo, specially status quo, when I was a little lost in my life direction that song was everything to me, to walk the path I wanted

Lex Villagrán

Yeahh. There is a reason that Kick it up a Notch used to pretty much top every Starkid best songs list.

Philipp Schäfer

Joey Richter, breaking my heart when he's not being a villain (and even sometimes then).

squirrel apocalypse

I've been a Starkid fan since about 2013-2014, back when I was suuuuper early teens. Despite my love and adoration for every show, old and new, Starship has remained my favourite. The universe it creates and the tropes it hits are so special to me - and looking back on it now, it really resonated with me as a young trans person that used musical theatre as my escape from the real world. It also cool that you clocked the Pincer & Ursula / The Little Mermaid similarities, because Starkid themselves have jokingly referred to Starship as "The Little Mermaid but in space"

Jasper

This is how I feel about the version they performed for their 10 year reunion! At first I was disappointed it wasn’t Joey singing it, but Mariah (and I forget the name of the other girl) absolutely killed it as a duet and now I can never unhear their version

Jordan Leigh

It's specifically a parody of Private Vasquez in Aliens : same outfit, accent, "tough chick" personality, etc. It was (and still is) quite rare and remarkable to have a straight-up badass woman as an action hero (just like Ripley in the 1st Alien movie), and a very masculine one at that, but yeah the character has specifically been criticized in more recent years for being played by a white actress in fake tan.

Claire MB

This was Starkid’s 3rd musical by release (depending on how hardcore you are) and Kick it Up a Notch was so good I still play it constantly in the car, it’s early on my villain song playlist.

Connor Black

It’s important to me that you know that Up is Voldemort, Prince Achmed, and Ducker ❤️❤️❤️ He’s such a chameleon!

Kate Murphy

This show was so incredibly meaningful to me when I was around 13, I’m so glad it’s resonating with you so hard! It tends to be overshadowed by Starkid’s most popular shows, but it’s one of my absolute favorites.

Hannah Williams

I believe that Taz is a parody/mocking that kind of absurdly stereotyped character who would often appear in action/horror movies of the 80’s and 90’s. I think I’ve heard that there is a specific character in Alien she’s referencing? I know that not everyone feels this way, but to me the fact that she exists to say ‘Isn’t it stupid that these one dimensional stereotyped characters exist?’, I don’t see that as a problematic character.

Ashley Evers

Some others have mentioned it already but Taz is a parody of Pvt. Vasquez from Alien 2, with some of her lines just ripped entirely from that movie. Starship as a whole is also largely parodying the Aliens franchise, even outside of Taz and Krayonder’s characters, but you’ll see that more as it goes on. As someone who loves Starship and didn’t watch any of the Alien movies until this year, I was just spending so much time thinking “wow this is just like Starship!! …wait.”

Jordan Leigh

It's been at least a decade since I've seen Starship, so I totally forgot who (or more precisely what) sings Kick it Up a Notch right up until the bros were talking about Pincer. I immediately went "oh NO! Poor Mortius, I hope he'll be okay...". I am sososo sorry you walked into that without any warning, but I'm glad the puppetry was "off" enough that you could (somewhat) push past it. Looking forward to re-experiencing this show with you! :)

fluffqueen91

I wasn’t a huge fan of Status Quo when I first watched this show, but the version on their Space Tour album literally gives me chills every time I listen to it. It’s all the male vocalists from the tour and the harmonies really defy description, it’s beautiful.

Johanna Wilson

I am SO happy that you are loving this show so much, it is sincerely one of their best, maybe not a masterpiece like Twisted or TGWDLM but it's close. Can't wait to see you react to the rest of this show. And yeah, the humor can be a bit outdated in the older shows but: 1- Not nearly as much as you'd expect from a group of students making parodies more than 10 years ago, I was honestly impressed by how much they hold up all things considered 2- In this case I don't know if it's even that bad I mean the actress is Lauren Lopez, and that's a surname of hispanic origins so maybe she is just hamming up her own culture, I dunno. Plus it feels more like they are making fun of their own delivery rather than actually doing a racial caricature. 3- Regardless you should have more faith in Starkid, they so well tread the line between funny and sincere which is one of the things I love most about them, they make fun in good faith and care about having characters that you do genuinely care about at the end of the day.

KurtzyPan

WHILE BEARING A GOOD CHUNK OF THE WEIGHT OF THAT PUPPET ON HIS SHOULDERS!! It’s truly impressive

Johanna Wilson

God I’m so glad you’re enjoying this show!!!! It’s always hit or miss with reactors seeing the older shows, but it’s so great to see someone that appreciates them!!!! It also has been great to go back and watch through this with you as it’s been FOREVER since I sat down and watched the whole show, I forgot how wonderful it is

honkceasar

I feel exactly the same

Jemina_Monster

I love Starship so much! Honestly, i feel like this is the pwrfect show for in-between BF and NPMD because you are seeing where these actors once were and with NPMD you get to see where they ended up. Joey is so good even as a Senior in college he is able to comand the stage and his voice is so good and as time goes on he just keep getting better and better. Theres a reason he and Lauren are my favorites (though I love Dylan too). This was the first show i saw outside of AVPM and I fell so much in love. Im so happy you love this as much as i did! Cant wait for act two!

logicaldreamer

Starkid has called this play the little mermaid but in space

Sara Jarvis

This is my first time checking out this show purely because you're watching through it, and I'm falling in love with it right alongside you. I had always heard from other fans that Kick It Up A Notch was a banger but I genuinely can't believe how GOOD that song is!!! And I love seeing Nick Lang playing characters on stage, I wish he would act in more of the shows he writes!!

FriendEmmett

I agree with a lot of comments here, despite a lot of the flaws this show might have, I love this show. Some of that might be down to nostalgia because I got into Starkid around the time this show came out, but there is just so much to love that is classic Starkid. I haven't watched this in a while and I forgot how much I love the characters in this and started tearing up at the end with Roach and then Bug's big moment. I'm glad you like this musical as much as you do!

Alexandra

If it makes you feel better, Pincer's puppet was beheaded and the body thrown into a dumpster in LA and Nick and Matt just kept the head because they were moving and didn't want to transport such a huge puppet So there was just a puppet body hanging out of a dumpster somewhere for some people to see and the thought of that makes me cackle

Alexandra

I will say that the characters in this are more parodies of well known stereotypes than it being purely outdated. but maybe that doesn't come across as well if you aren't familiar with those stereotypes?

Chris

And your reactions to certain things in this part makes me so excited for act 2 and one song in particular...

erin quilmer

People sleep on this show so much but it's genuinely so good. I wish they'd give it a reboot like they did TGWDLM because Joey's voice has matured so much and I'd love to hear how they'd arrange the music now and see how they'd stage it with the kind of budget they'd have today

erin quilmer

hot take: kick it up a notch is the best song in all of starkid

oh no elizabeth

I’ll have to watch this later but since I’m deeply hyperfixated on Hatchetfield right now and this is a buffer series essentially I wanted to make it known I have a list being put together of predictions for when you finally get to Nerdy Prudes Must Die

Sarah Rodrigues

Kick It Up A Notch took very very seriously the assignment of "this is the Poor Unfortunate Souls part of the show and we need a villain song that is just as memorable and goes even harder". Starship has some slow clunky parts to it but man is it worth sticking with for the sake of the songs. Like many other fans, I am so looking forward to a certain Act 2 song.

Smee

also how the everloving #### did Dylan sing that ENTIRE song with his arms up?

TiaMattia2

Starship is the show I wish they would remount and rework. It needs a good trimming down (at LEAST half an hour cut) but it has really good bones and some absolute bangers. It's actually such a sweet story about what it means to be human. Oh and you haven't even got to my favorite song yet - though Kick it up a Notch is up there as well. Fun trivia: - this was their first out-of-college show. The reviews were "snip, snip, Starkid..." (cut it down!) - the headband is Ron's headband from the Very Potter series - Darren got cast in Glee halfway through writing the music and only managed 8 songs - and very last minute. The entire crew was mad at him (but only for a short while).

TiaMattia2

WHAT. I cannot imagine anyone but Dylan being Tootsie

TiaMattia2

1:09:22 Omg you were right, Owen DIDN’T really die! They just froze his body and sent him to space where he got his brain swapped with Bug’s!!

Lindsey

Love this show, even if it's a little inconsistent in parts. Pincer's line about his fears (etc) literally trying to eat him was a callback to him being given the job of Nourishment. :)

Jo Eberhardt

Also fun fact! The music and lyrics for Starship were written by Darren Criss while he was filming Glee. He was still working with Starkid at the time the production began, and was originally supposed to play Tootsie! Unfortunately, he was unable to do so because of his responsibilities on Glee and had to leave the production early. It’s insane how close we were to a timeline where Dylan Saunders Tootsie Noodles doesn’t exist. It would be interesting to see how Darren Criss played him, but I literally cannot see anyone but Dylan Saunders in that role.

Lindsey

EXACTLY the reaction I was hoping for with Kick It Up A Notch. It’s probably my favorite Starkid song, pure perfection

Lindsey

Yep, exactly this! You are 100% correct.

Gabriel the Sorcerer

When he said something like "now that we have all the cast" and im like oh nope, we're not done yet. I knew that after Pincer you'll be hooked on the show (I didnt know about your phobia though... im glad that it doesn't bother you enough to ruin your experience). I love kick it up a notch, its one of the their best songs, especially villain songs. Dylan is so so good in everything but the differences between his characters in both voice and personality is so amazing, I cant stop adoring how much talented he is! And Lauren too, she was always the show stealer from the very beginning as Draco in AVPM. I love Tootsie so much! also The Good Place mention 😄 Im glad you saved the Owen joke, it made me laugh so hard. Also yes, this is The Little Mermaid but in sapce, as Starkid said themselves. Im so happy you like this show, you point out things I didnt think about and its so much fun. I cant wait to see you get to specific parts of the show. Twisted is my favorite, but I will always have a soft spot for Starship.

Etsie_99

I and the majority of us Starkids love Kick it Up a Notch for a reason. It's one of my favorite villain song from them along side a song from Nerdy Prudes Must Die and Cinderella's Castle. (Those who've seen those shows can probably guess what I'm referring to.) Also I have a ridiculous not really cannon compliant head cannon, I like to think that a meteor filled with the same Blue St*t from TGWDLM landed on Bug World but mutated from zombie like virus into a mind melder.

Abby

And on that note, most if not all of the main characters are meant to be parody-ing some sort of trope. The "dumb man" trope (Tootsie), "dumb blonde woman" trope (February), the lowkey toxic masculinity type (Krayonder), overly stereotypical "token" Hispanic character (Taz). It isn't solely their poorly aged humor.

Ace

I think Taz is just meant to be parodying the overly stereotypical Hispanic characters in older movies. Like it's very intentionally over the top to point out how ridiculous those tropes were

Ace

Kick it Up A Notch is one of my favorite villain songs. Not just Starkid, but in all of musical theatre

Mikayla Prushik

As a pastiche of a number of existing sci-fi ips and prevalent tropes, it'd be more accurate to say that Up, Taz, Krayonder, Specs, and Tootsie Noodles are caricatures. I'm not familiar enough with the genre to call out everything, but the biggest parallels of Taz and Krayonder can be found in Aliens, for example, in the characters Pvt. Vasquez and Pvt. Hudson respectively.

tkay-0

Starship is one of my favorite Starkid shows. Is it the best one? Not by a long shot. Its humor can be pretty outdated, the plot has some fumbles and not every character is excellent. But it has such a charm to it, some legitimate bangers and legitimately impressive puppetry. Starship the show that you are. One of my Top 5 starkid shows for sure.

Petalstripe

I think laurens character might be a parady of a character in aliens. Where they had a hispanic character played by a white woman. Im just speculating tho but she looks sop similar to that character

Alex Foster

Kick it Up a Notch remains my favorite Starkid villain song!

GarboKlarbo

Yeah, unfortunately the humor in this show really is just that outdated. Theyve consistently done better in future shows but they definitely had a rough period back then. That's said I still love this show

Masochismet

*concern about Lauren's double casting with Dylan's around the corner ready to punch them in the face* oh, honey..... 🤣🤣🤣💜💜💜💜

Robin

It's 12:30am but fuck it, I have a night shirt tomorrow so I might as well fuck up my sleep schedule to watch this
