To answer your question, hope you see this before you look it up and get some spoilers about the royal family. And I think it was talked about in the books/manga at this point but kinda glossed over in the anime. Erald is actually the empress Elmesias uncle. But he is younger than her. One of her parents is the much elder sibling of Erald and already had her well before the time Erald was born. So Eren (Elyun) is the empress’s first cousin.

Rimuru purposely invited everyone who knew about his connection to Shizu to that meeting. And don't forget about the ruins. ......... Sea travel is extremely dangerous. Also, if you get a look at one of the prior maps, the area to the east of Dwargon, and N and NE of Forest of Jura and Milim's territory (in particular the part of it that is furthest NE) borders on the Eastern Empire. ...... The Council of the West isn't exactly a government, it's more like the UN with a little bit of NATO thrown in. It was initially formed to protect against monsters and the Eastern Empire to some degree.

The plot progressed steadily throughout the whole season, with more and more world buiding, and it ends with a resolution of the season's main threats and a set goal for the future. I hope the story continues to be this well handled in the next season. I was not ready to appreciate this much a season that can be summarized as "politics, economics and how to lead a new nation".
