Chapter 627 A satisfying meal

Author’s note: Hey everyone. Third and last chapter today and compared to last week I’ll just be posting this ahead of time, so only one chapter next Saturday. Should be able to write Leaves for Thursday though :).

I updated chapter 622 with a bunch of small fixes that some of you pointed out, notably the health calculation, Archon Strike now also works with feet, and I removed 5 stat points from Intelligence as she reached lvl 481 in Kin of Ash twice (in 618/619). Also changed minor issues with skill descriptions but nothing that actually changes anything.

I wanted to write a quick end of year thingy that so many content printers tend to spew out. So if that isn’t your thing, go on and read the chapter (or come back later for this).

First of all a massive thanks to everyone who reads Azarinth Healer and Leaves of Terranthir. I started out writing because I just really enjoyed doing it and your feedback and continued support has made me stick with it. I hopefully got better at it too but it’s difficult to judge your own work. Knowing you’re all still here is proof enough that I made something people can enjoy.

Since it’s become my job to do this, I could write far more than I would’ve likely ever done otherwise. Some arcs were crap, some chapters downright boring, but I’m proud of what it’s all become. Not a masterpiece or something that future writers will look to in their endeavor to learn the craft, but something generally lighthearted, fun, and just downright entertaining. It’s what I aim for, and what I love to write.

2020 was a conglomeration of raid bosses descending unto our mortal planes. For some they hit harder, for some less so. With everything on fire, I think it’s even more important to keep oneself sane. One way to do that is entertainment. Reading, gaming, writing increasingly angry comments on newspaper comment sections, or just working out and meditating. I think I always enjoyed stories in whatever form they came, because many of them give us hope. And I hope this raid is soon coming to a close, with battered tanks and empty healers. But we will emerge victorious.

I don’t like to talk about my personal life much on here. The main thing in relation to writing was the change with Leaves. And I think I explained my thought process at the time well enough. Now a few months later, I can confidently say that it did exactly what I had hoped for.

I’m excited for what’s to come for both stories and hope that I can keep it somewhat fresh and entertaining. I also plan to have another art contest in the future, so look forward to that.

In the end I can only thank you for giving me money, for reading, for leaving comments, rating, sharing, and for discussing mad shit on the discord community. A big thanks to Royalroad and Patreon too, though the people behind it likely won’t ever read this. Two platforms that both provide a shit ton of awesome content and with Patreon a way to make it a living for the people behind it all.

So yeah, that’s it. Cheers, happy holidays, happy new years or whatever. Fuck off.

Chapter 627 A satisfying meal

Ilea poured some ale, sighing as she tasted the wonderful creation. Kin of Ash, here we go.

‘ding’ ‘Requirements met for class evolution: Kin of Ash becomes The Rotten Gravedigger. Be aware that other evolutions and skills may become unavailable -

Death itself. Leveled at least eight Class skills to the end of the third tier. Has killed at least 10’000 living creatures. Has the Rot Resistance and Death Magic Resistance skills at the end of the second tier. Has killed a level 1000 creature. Has the Deviant of Humanity skill. Has the Soul Perception skill. Has been hallowed as an omen of death. Has a Class at level 500.

Rot and death follow in your path. A silent abomination of rotten flesh, walking the world of the living. All those who lay their eyes on you shall find terror in their hearts, the inevitable end of all things having come for them. Permanent body enhancements mar your undead body, making you a master of death and rot. Bury those who fall to your will and summon their spirits when the time has come to bring ruin to your enemies.

Would you like to evolve your class [Kin of Ash] to [The Rotten Gravedigger]?’

Death itself. Probably super powerful this one… but I don’t really want to become undead… or a silent abomination of rotten flesh. The smells alone… ugh.

‘ding’ ‘Requirements met for class evolution: Kin of Ash becomes Poison Queen. Be aware that other evolutions and skills may become unavailable -

The unseen. Leveled at least four Class skills to the end of the third tier. Has founded an organization of powerful mercenaries. Has infiltrated the governments of various cities and countries. Is part of a secret order. Knows military Generals, master assassins, and master blood mages. Has the Poison Resistance skill at the end of the second tier. Has killed a level 750 creature. Has ingested poison for pleasure. Has a Class at level 500.

Feared and hidden. Only whispers speak of your presence, only those in power knowing of your existence. Your influence has reached the hearts of desperate criminals and the halls of kings alike. Poison is far from your only weapon, the power you wield over your subordinates far more effective in the pursuit of your unparalleled ambitions. Rule from the Shadows.

Would you like to evolve your class [Kin of Ash] to [Poison Queen]?’

Here we go again, with the constant royalty suggestions. And here I thought kings and queens were either crowned from marriage, conquest, or born into it. Not that I couldn’t conquer a city or two by now. With both gold or force alone. But what’s the point of all this power when you end up with administrative work and thousands of people to take care of? Breaking out of the cage just to be shackled onto the top of it.

‘ding’ ‘Requirements met for class evolution: Kin of Ash becomes Corrupted Lunatic. Be aware that other evolutions and skills may become unavailable -

Plip Plop, Plip Plop. Leveled at least six Class skills to the end of the third tier. Has fought ten four mark beings. Has killed a level 1000 creature while alone. Has killed thousands of living creatures. Has defied a once divine being. Has fifty Resistance skills. Has the Pain Tolerance skill in the third tier. Has seen unfathomable beings of primordial times. Has the Deviant of Humanity skill in the second tier. Has a Class at level 500.

Burn them all. Rip them to shreds. Kill. Kill. Kill. Look to the moons and scream. AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH. Pain, so much pain. Focus on the blood, do not fear the unknown. Embrace it, drink it, revel in it. For you too, will ascend.

Would you like to evolve your class [Kin of Ash] to [Corrupted Lunatic]?’

Not sure if I should feel scared or insulted.

‘ding’ ‘Requirements met for class evolution: Kin of Ash becomes The Firedrake Charger. Be aware that other evolutions and skills may become unavailable -

Summon the elemental flames. Leveled at least eight Class skills to the end of the third tier. Has killed three level 1000 creatures. Has the Heat Resistance skill in the third tier. Has incinerated hundreds of enemies. Has fought Drakes, Wyverns, and Wyrms. Has flown at the speed of sound. Has a thing for dragons. Has a Class at level 500.

Fire answers to your beck and call. Whole cities will burn at your wrath, no walls or barriers enough to stop the magic you conjure into existence. The next step on your path to understand the ancient nature of dragons. Those you face will question your humanity, remembering the whispers of untold winged horrors. There is no subtlety in your existence, your journey one of subjugation and conquest.

Would you like to evolve your class [Kin of Ash] to [The Firedrake Charger]?’

Alright. I don’t have a thing for dragons. Maybe I have a thing for fire wielding Elves, but not dragons. The logistics alone… no thanks. Hmm, so purely fire based… problem is I don’t see body enhancements or anything. Eternal provides both healing and defense but my ash stuff has been such a staple for my continued survival. I don’t think I should trade that in for offensive fire magic, no matter how powerful.

‘ding’ ‘Requirements met for class evolution: Kin of Ash becomes Volcanic Elementalist. No current skills or stats will be lost, be aware that other evolutions and skills may become unavailable -

Unprecedented destruction. Leveled at least eight Class skills to the end of the third tier. Has killed a level 1000 creature. Has the Lava Magic Resistance skill in the third tier. Has found comfort swimming in lava. Has trained with a Trakorov. Has melted down to her very bones, several times. Drank lava. Has a Class at level 500.

You have seen the power wielded by those born within the ancient seas of molten rock, have endured the fires and heat to now wield them yourself. You become a living natural disaster, capable of destroying entire cities with your earth and lava magic. Inferior creatures will melt away as you pass, your name joining those of legend.

Would you like to evolve your class [Kin of Ash] to [Volcanic Elementalist]?’

Okay that’s pretty fucking cool. Dunno why I like this one more than the fire one. Maybe I have a thing for Trakorovs instead.

‘ding’ ‘Requirements met for class evolution: Kin of Ash becomes The Ashen Titan. No current skills or stats will be lost, be aware that other evolutions and skills may become unavailable -

Indestructible, unrelenting. Leveled ten Class skills to the end of the third tier. Has killed a level 1000 creature while alone. Has killed five level 1000 creatures. Has the Heat Resistance skill in the third tier. Has ten Resistance skills in the third tier. Has faced the most powerful spells of her adversaries without fear. Has burned up from within to deliver more powerful blows. Has killed thousands of creatures with heat alone. Has endured ten thousand enemy spells. Has an ash related Class at level 500.

You have faced the fires of creation, have endured heat beyond comprehension, your body tempered by the spells of your enemies, their ultimate death inevitable. Your armor is that of a titan, your body forged for battle, magic burning through your veins, enhancing you beyond human capability. Heat forms within you, embers are left in your path. All shall burn and perish to the blows of the titan, your control of ash and embers instinctual, a connection forged through endless battles. Charge, titan of ash and cinders, into the blades and magic of your enemies, and emerge victorious.

Would you like to evolve your class [Kin of Ash] to [The Ashen Titan]?’

Finally some more body enhancements. And more defensive stuff. Would just be nice to have a focus on punching. Lava or fire might not combine well with my Eternal Class. I hope this one wouldn’t make me five meters tall or something… aren’t titans supposed to be large? No mention of height though.

‘ding’ ‘Requirements met for class evolution: Kin of Ash becomes The Ashen Meadow Knight. Be aware that other evolutions and skills may become unavailable -

The Dark Knight. Leveled eight Class skills to the end of the third tier. Has killed a level 1000 creature. Has befriended the Meadow. Is deemed ashen by the Meadow. Is deemed in dire need of evolutionary assistance by the Meadow. Has the Deviant of Humanity skill in the third tier. Has an ash related Class at level 500.

You have seen true injustice, have suffered through pain and hardship. The burden you carry upon your oversized pauldrons is overwhelming, and yet you push on. You save the deserving and slay the enemies of justice. You are a dark knight, wielding the banner of the Meadow. The corruption of the world will be cleansed by your black steel sword, and thought the people will deem you unjust, you will sacrifice everything to save them.

Would you like to evolve your class [Kin of Ash] to [The Ashen Meadow Knight]?’

Ilea groaned, her two companions glancing at her.

At this point it’s just stealing a better option. My pauldrons aren’t oversized… they barely even qualify as pauldrons in the first place. Fucking tree.

‘ding’ ‘Requirements met for class evolution: Kin of Ash becomes The Cindered Octopus. Be aware that other evolutions and skills may become unavailable -

The art of evasion. Leveled eight Class skills to the end of the third tier. Has killed three level 1000 creatures. Has the Harmony of the Drowned spell. Has fought a level one thousand being while under water. Has killed a thousand monsters with limbs made of ash. Has evaded ten thousand spells. Has evaded one thousand attacks that would’ve led to heavy damage. Has an ash related Class at level 500.

You have fought in a thousand battles, using body enhancement spells to efficiently evade incoming spells and physical attacks. The octopus won’t be seen nor heard as it moves past enemy lines, ashen limbs ripping through hordes of monsters before they notice its presence. Attacks will be deflected or entirely avoided, every move you make steady and perfectly calculated, your ash turning your body into a deadly weapon that cannot be stopped.

Would you like to evolve your class [Kin of Ash] to [The Cindered Octopus]?’

That actually sounds pretty fucking good too. But evasion is just not my style. A necessity if anything, she thought and noted down the possibilities on the next page of her notebook, smiling when she saw the options from her Sentinel evolution. Now let’s see.

The Rotten Gravedigger - silent stinking undead
Poison Queen - Become Helena
Corrupted Lunatic - Thank you arcane healing
The Firedrake Charger - Full on fire mage (better than Fey?
Pride damage)
Volcanic Elementalist - Same but Lava.
Cool but no body enhancement or defense mentions :(
The Ashen Titan - Armor of a titan, heat stuff?
Resistances too.
The Cindered Octopus - Full on ashen limbs. Too roguey, no intrusion? Requires sneaking?

Now, do I want to become a fire or lava mage? Yes and no. Yes if it’s from another Class or something… but even then, it would be stupid not to choose body enhancement stuff or more healing. I just got a massive boost to my offensive capabilities, more defense is what I need if I want to continue growing… without dying that is.

I guess my ranged and area attacks won’t be nearly as good as those of the Firedrake Charger or Volcanic Elementalist but should I really prioritize that? Today I was saved by healing, resistances, and resilience again. The same shit that’s been helping me since I became an Azarinth Healer. Kind of a no brainer, isn’t it? Let’s hope I don’t grow to five meters.

‘ding’ ‘Class change: Kin of Ash becomes The Ashen Titan

Vitality +200
Strength +50
Dexterity +20
Intelligence +20
Wisdom +15

Body enhancement magic is improved by 400%
All Ashen magic skills are improved by 200%
All fighting styles using hand to hand combat are more refined
Your will is ash and embers
You cannot be stunned by enemy attacks
Your bones and muscles have increased density

More Vitality is always nice. Another hundred for Body enhancement… and Ashen magic. I think the stunning effect is something I have anyways thanks to Flare of Creation, but I guess now I don’t have to use the spell to get the benefit. Even more weight… well at least I didn’t grow. Sadly no triple health. Incredibly unfair.

[Armor of Ash] becomes [Mantle of the Titan]

Active: Mantle of the Titan – 3rd lvl 30
An armor of hardened ash protects you. Stronger than steel and forming to your will. The Mantle increases your resilience by 160% [1920%].
2nd stage: The strength of your Resistance skills also benefit from Mantle of the Titan. The Mantle is a part of the Titan’s body. It benefits from natural regeneration. You can feel through your Mantle and you can heal it.
3rd stage: Increases the defensive capabilities of all ash and ember you control. Increase the ash used to form your mantle by up to a static 300%. The additional ash used requires conscious manipulation.
Category: Body Enhancement – Ashen magic

Oh wow. Wait, the base went up by… twenty five percent? The second tier is… crazy. Does that mean I can recover my ash with my third tier healing? Ah I hope I can at least move it to my back or something when I want to walk around without my armor.

I assume the third tier means I can control fewer limbs or spears while the effect is active. The weight and proportions will be interesting to see. Oh and all the light armor restrictions are gone… here I come super heavy scale armor!

[Aspect of Ash] becomes [Titan Core]

Active: Titan Core – 3rd lvl 30:
Ember glows within you raising your resilience, speed, Strength, Intelligence and Dexterity by 70% [700%]. Your learn how to generate and store heat within your Titan Core. This effect has a separate mana requirement.
2nd stage: The longer you fight with Titan Core active, the deeper it roots. Each minute of fighting adds 15% more power to the skill with a maximum of 150%.
3rd stage: Familiarity with the skill removes its upkeep. You can choose to increase your weight by 10% [100%] for each passing minute to a maximum of a static 500%, increasing your natural health regeneration and heat generation by the same factor.
Category: Aura – Body Enhancement

Same value… oh, more heat. Can I stack that with the heat generation from Heart of Cinder? I hope so. The storing part probably means I can hold even more without taking damage, but I guess that remains to be seen. Costs mana though but heh, have enough of that anyway.

Getting heavier in exchange for health regeneration and heat generation? Not sure how effective that will be. I suppose it effectively reduced the cooldown of an effective Heart of Cinder usage. Nice against slow enemies or those whose attacks I can take. Which should be a lot more with that Mantle change.

[True Ash Creation] becomes [Origin of Ash and Embers]

Active: Origin of Ash and Embers – 3rd lvl 30
Create ash and embers in a certain radius around you.
2nd stage: You can control the density of the ash and the heat of embers to an extent.
3rd stage: You have proven your dedication. Ash and embers move to aid and destroy at your whims.
Category: Ashen Magic

Eh? This is just the same skill isn’t it? With embers? I hope it’s better in some way at least. But fuck it, it’s a useful skill either way, even if it’s just a name change.

[Heart of Cinder] becomes [Embered Heart]

Active: Embered Heart – 3rd lvl 30
Increase the heat in your body and release it in a blast around you.
2nd stage: The embers run deep. The heat you may reach is only limited by your very life. Your resistance to heat held within your body is doubled.
3rd stage: Focus on release to change the blast into a cone of destruction sent out of either arm. You may store heat within ash you control, the more ash used, the higher its potential to hold heat. Ash not connected to you releases its stored heat upon a strong impact in a blast around it.
Category: Body Enhancement – Ashen Magic

More storage. I guess that just depends on how fast I can charge it. Wait… does that third tier mean I can throw ashen spears filled with heat? That would explode on impact? Testing. Required.

[Storm of Cinders] becomes [Tempered Seal]

Active: Tempered Seal – 3rd lvl 30
Burn the inside of whatever your body hits with a surge of heat and embers or release the attack in a burst of fire and cinders.
2nd stage: The flame burns on. Targets hit will have fire burning through or on them. Time and consecutive attacks will increase the effect. When using your arms, fists, fingers, legs, feet, or head, you gain the ability to send pockets of heat within your enemies alongside the initial surge of heat and embers. Activate these pockets to cause a violent explosion of fire within the affected targets. Can be activated three seconds after pocket formation or until heat is lost.
3rd stage: Tempered Seal burns away all that stand against it, damaging mana intrusion capabilities of defensive enchantments, natural- as well as manufactured armor. You may add heat to existing heat pockets or form more.
Category: Ashen magic

Hot pockets. Delayed damage? I wonder how much I can stack this… might be helpful against regenerating enemies or if I want to make someone’s head explode especially hard.

[Ash and Ember Unity] becomes [Authority of Ash and Ember]

Passive: Authority of Ash and Ember – 3rd lvl 30:
You are one with Ash and Ember. Allies rushing to your aid.
2nd stage: Your understanding grows, allowing you to create greater change in ash and ember. Imbue mana into your creations. Ash and Ember you imbued retains its form until the mana is used up.
3rd stage: The elements themselves become an extension of your body, an extension of your will, for as long as they stay in physical contact with you. Ash not connected benefits from passive abilities enhancing your body. You may imbue simple commands into ash and ember you have imbued with mana.
Category: Ashen magic

Simple commands? Okay that could mean a lot. The second tier alone is pretty good… could build traps or defensive perimeters before starting a fight. If that’s how it works… but hey, I’ll forget to do that anyway, won’t I?

[Eyes of Ash] becomes [Vision of Ash]

Passive: Vision of Ash – lvl 3rd lvl 30
Increases your perception by 65% [780%] when fighting.
2nd stage: Opportunity calls, you notice possible critical weak points on enemies with more ease. You can choose to see through ash and embers.
3rd stage: Your eyes are vastly improved. Great distances and a lack of light won’t pose a problem to you anymore. You can control ash and embers that you can see.
Category: Body Enhancement – Ashen magic

Wait… that third tier… without a distance limit? I can just send a spear out… charged now with heat…

She grinned to herself, already thinking of possibilities as she went on to read the last skill change.

[Keeper of Ash] becomes [Embered Form]

Passive: Embered Form – 3rd lvl 30:
You are one with the fighting style of Ash. Damage inflicted is 85% [850%] higher.
2nd stage: Adds density to your bones, muscles and skin to increase strength, speed and damage. Base body weight is doubled. The abuse your body takes from your own strikes and their feedback is reduced.
3rd stage: Reduces stamina consumption by a static 35%. Mana intrusion attacks formed or charged within your arms, hands, fingers, legs, feet, or your head can instead be converted into a purely physical damage increase to the executed attack. Be aware that this increase will be heavily demanding for your body.
Category: Body Enhancement

Does that mean any mana I use for Archon Strike and Tempered Seal instead just make me hit harder?

She imagined her arm would straight up explode from the energies released by that combination. But as with all the other skills, it needed some testing. She finished her plate and checked her status.

Comments

suggestion: [vision of ash] change to [ashen perception] because 'vision of ash' would have a typical meaning other than what the skill means, so it takes a bit of extra brain power for readers to comprehend.

bob barker

Yes and no. Her classes are separate as far as I understand it. She might resemble a phoenix but her ashen class skills do not. So the influence on evolution is not as strong.

Kachlicka

It should also be stronger than the other options. With ash she is building on an existing foundation. What happens when she changes that to something else entirely?

Kachlicka

Her path is sub-optimal already. If she took more time to train before leveling she might have gotten better options. But that is fine. Drama can be found without twisting Ilea into some kind of monster too. AND building up of her power is one of the things I like in the story. I would not like if that was twisted into some kind of curse.

Kachlicka

Her immortality felt almost inevitable so the eternal bonus kinda fell flat for me. And Ilea in normal slice of life would die of boredom. It would have to be somehow made Ilea-style. If the author mentioned her fighting trips as a footnote it might work though. I mean with the teleportation gates and her speed she could take such relaxing trips easily without wasting months on them. It might also allow for some time-skips which I think would not be bad thing sometimes. Otherwise her immortality would be entirely irrelevant. I do not thing we will ever see Ilea reach even 30 years of age otherwise.

Kachlicka

Thanks for the chapter! I feel like the sentinels need a visit from their founder soon..

Draugluir

iirc it's her subconscious writing the flavor text, and it's pretty unlikely she distinguishes btwn mass and weight. For laypeople it's pretty universal to treat the two concepts as one, and no harm done (unless, ofc, they're an engineer, physicist, or astronauts). She does go other places, but hasn't mentioned much (anything?) about diff local grav...and I seriously doubt she cares. I think it would be a writing error to make a fuss about it, tbh. She doesn't care/doesn't notice, and neither do most readers. It would be an unnecessary bit of opacity for most folks, I think. Just IMHO.

fbt

I think the weight description of Titan Core should be changed to mass. For example if she was in space and weighed pretty much nothing increasing her weight by a percentage wouldn't really do anything. Weight is the product mass and gravity(W=mg). So if you doubled her mass her weight would also double. It would also mean that if she isn't changing her mass her class is changing the gravitational force she feeIs. If the skill did increase her mass then it would also have the cool effect of making her that much denser and probably that much sturdier also which is a cool additional by product. Hell since it's from her ashen side it could even be as if additional ash/ember was being incorporated into her which probably make using the skill look pretty awesome. So changing the skill descriptor to mass would make more sense for simple physics, add to her density/durability/weight as the skill ramps up , and could have the ash/ember incorporation visual cue that you could use in the writing whenever she uses the skill.

Dominic French

Endurance as a stat only affects stamina, though.

BeatleNerd

Maybe this is too nitpicking, but does anyone else feel like her Ash Class should give +200 endurance rather than vitality based on the description?

Craig

I mean her ash is an extension of herself nothing stopping her from making herself as large as a titan other than her control limits. On that note I hope she begins pushing her control limits and other limits more in combat and out

Dominic French

That would be a colossal waste of points. She has SIX skills boosting her physical attributes (eight if you count the two Faen skills that boost resilience), and the total boost is huge (more than a factor of 30). Her actual speed obviously cannot get much higher. Her strength is fine, and she even got a way to give it a big boost with Ashen Titan. That leaves endurance, which is obviously not in need of any boosts since her skills enhancing resilience are the greatest of all, more than 50 times total. The only benefit to putting points into endurance would be to increase her stamina. That may become necessary at some point, but so far it has not been a serious issue since stamina drain resistance 2nd-tier allows her to get by without stamina by using mana and health. Also, Embered Form reduces stamina consumption by 35%. Before putting points into endurance, she should at least try to get stamina drain resistance to 3rd tier to see if that helps, and possibly if she gets any more skill slots she should consider taking the Lull of Battle skill.

Bad timing. Would've been nice as a Halloween Special :D Levels came too late...

I want to see an alternate reality where Ilea chose Flesh Destroyer and Corrupted Lunatic

Wont lie, i kinda want ilea to choose a class at some point that changes her physiology drastically to something inhuman. Perhaps she can still shapeshift to look human but ya get what i mean. With the ashen titan, would have been fun if she grew to the size of an amazonian or something, with a very toned body signifying steel-like muscles.

Kelan

Great chapter. Evolution looks groundbreaking in some ways. But after seeing those stats for strength, dexterity, and endurance at the end it feels like she should start putting some points into them. I mean she is constantly getting shredded which is slowing her down quite a bit, and adding more points to the other 3 stats is not gonna make nearly as much of a difference in comparison with how high they already are. I mean it would be nice for her to get those 3 to 1000 before the rest get to 2000, just to even things out a bit. Especially since it will be a while after her 3rd class evolves before her next set of evolutions at, what, level 750 or 1000?

PlasmaticPi

Arcane Eternal vs Ashen Titan... I feel like the Ashen Titan class is really two classes: [Everburning], and [Titan] (actually I sorta feel that Everburning is sorta the idea behind Illea being Ash, fits the theme): because [Titan] is definitely "body", while [Ashen] is a Modifier (when the primary part of the class isn't a mage, this makes less sense). I wonder if [Ashborn Titan] would be more appropriate? The essence of ash is what is left over after the fire, and Illea is eternal so both refined and yet never losing anything, in an endless cycle: Illea is very much a sort of phoenix, however she also Increases in strength, a phoenix is reborn in ash, ash is born in fire, Illea is both Ashborn and titan, so Ashborn Titan?

Gavriel

There is a massive amount of new utility in her ash class that was missing from her arcane one. This evolution opens up entire new ways for her to fight, some of which are quite ridiculous not to mention the massive increase to her tankyness.

Melting Sky

It almost felt like Ilea 2nd class evolution was underwhelming compared to her Arcane Eternal class. I guess time will tell

Matthew D

Yeah seeing through ash is new. Ilea has always been creating eye holes for her ash armour and sometimes in her walls to see the massive attack she usually formed it for. That's why her blue eyes always gets referenced in fights and by people since those are the only visible parts of herself.

Atlas Dwarf

Is the "see through ash and embers" new in her Vision skill? I don't remember it from before. I know she could previously use her sphere for short range, but with this change she can use a full helm with no openings to help protect her brain and have no downsides.

Feeling a little underwhelmed by the evolution. I was expecting something more like a mix of the volcanic elementalist and ashen titan, like volcanic titan, adding or combining existing effects to include fire/earth/lava magics. Titan seems like just a minor upgrade.

Scott

"and thought the people" --> and though

Cadastral

By the way, if her necklace is getting full, Ilea should still have the Rhyvor bracelet, which has 100 units of storage.

If she wasn't already unimaginably wealthy, I would definitely say that she should make ash weapons and sell them. (If she imbued most of her mana pool i bet they'd last a while) maybe she can do this for the sentinels to some degree.

Forrest Minter

She just needs to avoid Zeus % Co. and she's golden.

Jonathan

I hope now every time she walks into a wooden building the floor starts creaking horribly, and sometimes when she sits in a normal chair it breaks.

Chopper

We already had almost a month and a half of Ilea interacting with regular people. What we need now are more epic adventures. She still has to find two more of the Taleen metal master keys so she can control the formless one in Iz. She also is long overdue for a trip to the Foundation of Glass to see if Scipio is there and whether there are any realm travelers there (I'd say bring along Maro, Dagon, and Kyrian if he wants to come) It would also be interesting to see her go exploring another continent. Since she can easily teleport back and forth now with three marked locations, and communicate with all her people, exploring long distances from "home" has little downside.

If having 'The' in front of the class name is supposed to make it a more powerful class, I would have expected more for the evolution from "Kin of Ash" to "The Ashen Titan".

It doesn't say her vision is infinite, just greatly improved. She can see much further and in much lower light levels.

Melting Sky

Odd that only two of the eight evolutions were even remotely viable (Volcanic Elementalist & Ashen Titan) since the other six did not promise to keep all her current skills. And Volcanic Elementalist was a very distant second place because it had little to say about body enhancement or resistances. I would have preferred all ten of her skills to get upgrades (also with Arcane Eternal) since the requirements for the class she chose were 10 class skills at the end of the third tier. With that requirement, it only seems fair to give all ten upgrades. Given that Ilea has now gotten sole credit for five kills of 4-mark creatures (Scorching Wyrm, 3 Mature Bluetails, Howling Queen of Rot) it would have been nice for a class to have that as a requirement, and be a truly epic class. Body enhancement at +500% and ashen magic at +300% would have been appropriate, I think. Also, a doubling of health and stamina would have been appropriate. The idea of healing her armor is bizarre. Ash moves and forms according to her will. There is no need to heal her armor. She just reforms it using her ash creation and/or control. She already moves it around and reforms it all the time. Two skills have seemingly contradictory effects. Titan Core 1st stage lets you generate heat with a "separate mana requirement" while the 3rd stage "removes its upkeep". It seems like Harthane was trying to say that the mana requirement is not "upkeep" but this kind of lawyer-ese of skills is irksome. The other contradictory skill is Embered Form. 2nd stage reduces the abuse your body takes from your own strikes and their feedback, but 3rd stage is heavily demanding for your body. Which is it? Ilea's creation skill now allows her to create ash or embers. Hopefully Ilea learns to use her creation skill better. Compared to how Meadow, or even just Hector, uses creation, Ilea seems to massively underachieve. With the boost to ashen magic from 100% to 200%, and maybe a core points enhancement, I hope Ilea learns to get a lot more out of that skill. The main theme of improvement seems to be generating and storing more heat in more places (her body, ash creations, enemy's bodies) and also much improved and extended control of ash and ember, including using mana and commands. I wonder if she could create an army of ash golems with mana inside and the ability to act semi-autonomously. Ashen wings did not get a direct upgrade, but since it is both body enhancement and ashen magic, the multiplier (from before Arcane Eternal) went from 9 to 12 for a 33% increase. Hopefully this should directly translate to a 33% increase (or more) in flight speed. Maybe using core points to enhance the wings will make them even faster again. That would be a good skill for her first try at enhancing a skill, to see what exactly it does. For the few people who think Ilea should waste stat points on dexterity, you should note that she has several skills that boost her speed, dexterity, reaction time, reflexes, etc. (Azarinth Awakening, Eternal Brawling, Eternal Sight, Titan Core, Avatar of Ash, Embered Form) and every one of those skills had its multiplier increased between 25% and 33% from the evolutions to Arcane Eternal and Ashen Titan. If she does not see a significant increase in her speed and reaction times from that already, then adding points to dexterity is a complete waste of points.

Now she is going to have tendrils of ash and embers that when she is fighting in melee combat are both super hot and explode when they leave her body. Since she can give her ash simple pre programmed commands she could make her clouds of ash that surround her enter opponents lungs and blow up or have thousands of shards swirling around her or stuff like that without conscious control. Whats to stop her from making ashen items before battle now and storing them in her necklace? So many options plus I think it will make her future combats more interesting and set it apart from her previous fighting style without removing it

Dominic French

I was really hoping that she would actually grow a few feet from her class. A towering Ilea would be funny to see when she mingles with the common folk. Thanks for the chapter!

The dark knight actually made me. Laugh 😂

Tim Deral

Hey, Happy New Years, and thank you for the chapters!! I loved the fight and how she joined forces with the snake. Personally I would love to see more day in the life stuff as well. I’ve actually been curious to see her maybe do a story time once in a while where she maybe goes into the Sentinel building and just tells them stories of her experiences. Maybe take a few of them to the north to meet Meadow and the other non human people that she has met. I feel like if she doesn’t do that, then the Sentinels aren’t going to understand the “won’t go to war with any sentient race” part of the mandate that she gave them, and by the time she tries to tell them that no, they can’t go on a crusade against the elves (as one example) it will be too late, and the Medic Sentinels will fracture. Then again, maybe you (the author) already has a plan to deal with that problem. I guess I’ll just have to wait and see...

Saaski

Embered Heart is somewhat disapointing Embered Heart Can store more heat whish is good ( will take longer to charge to full) and the tentacles will deal some minor aditional heat dmg under risk of losing the generated heat, but I don't value the ability to apply heart of cinders ranged now. It takes long to charge and Ilea has many teleports. Something more useful for Ilea would have been nice. Now for the skill upgrades i think are kinda bad or very disapointing Titan Core is disapointing because its only quite decent against oponents that don't truly endanger her life. One of her best skills update is only good for increasing grinding speed and in some very special circumstances. Sadly it doesn't give her more stats. 1st and 2nd Tier remain unchanged. It remains at 700% to resilience, strenght, speed, dex and int. A increase there would have been nice. It gives her more mass and buffs her storm of cinders heat generation by a large margin as the fight goes on. Makes her slower to though. Only advisable against oponents she can tank or snails which makes it so it doesn't help much in the realy truly dangerous fights. The same problem doesn't aply to Heart of Cinders because it always was one of the purely offensive skills of this class Origin of Ash and embers is disapointing. It is the same flavor text. Vision of Ashs ability to see through Ash and have more range on her ash (her vision) has barely any value in my opinion. She has her sphere, teleport and is a close combat fighter. A buff to her abilty to perceive stuff would have been better. All in all the skills are largely underwhelming and she didn't get a x3 health boost or even strenght boost. For how awsome her previous classes were, how much amazing stuff she went through since lvl 300, how many strong monsters she faced and how well she developed her class skills, resistances and general skills(Deviant etc) this is disapointing to me. Im somewhat underwhelmed regarding this classes strenght. It has some intereting skills though and i understand that Ilea is running starting to runout of oponents. Can't have her easily beat lvl 1400s.

Johannes Sauer

I know that most here would disagree and i agree that Harthame deserves a lot of praise. He has always been great to his community, doesn't pull any bs and has been my favorite author for 2 years now. Im not sure about this class though. She doesn't get any op multiplies like x3 mana and the skills mostly give her more things she can do, instead of enhancing her combat style. Only Mantle is a straight forward combat improvemnet. The rest only give Utility. She just doesn't get the raw survivability she needed. I only realy like Mantle of Titan and Tempered Seal. And im on the Fence with Authority of Ash. Embered Heart and Form are decent upgrades usefulness wise, but i don't like them. I realy dislike Titan Core and i think Vision and Origin are just terrible skill upgrades. Tempered Seal is the only added utility i feel she realy needed. The ability to deal massive burst damage with the heat bubbles by slowly applying them over time on regenerating targets will be quite useful and plays well into her outlasting the oponent and aplying intrusion style. Mantle of Titan is good. 300% more resilience and resistance effectivness(now 1920) resilience and also 3x thickness to her armor from 3d tier. She also will be wearing heavy drake level armor(or the mech), the ash will feel more like her body and she can heal her ash. Its also the only skillugrade that focuses on increasing her tankiness. Quite weird for a Titan. Avatar of Ash her other main durability skill sadly wasn't upgraded. Embered Form ability to convert intrusion dmg to normal dmg is also nice to have, especially since the skill actually gives a small 100% (now 850) dmg increase. My problem with that is, that i would have prefered a buff to her ability to apply intrusion which is one of her strong points instead of making intrusion less relevant. Im on the fence with Authority of Ash and Ember. It is interesting though. Would have been a great skill if Ilea was Trian. Ilea doesn't like to prepare. Being able to instruct her ash has some potential though. To bad the number of her tentacles was reduced by mantle. Ilea never had much trouble multitasking. So its mostly ranged stuff and preparation stuff. Maybe Ilea has some cool ideas though. Maybe prepare giant max densness Ash snakes to bind the oponent down.

Johannes Sauer

I do like how many of these classes were throwing shade on Ilea's habits and actions.

Alan McBrayer

I would love it if Kayla yelled at her to do this the next time she sees her.

Alan McBrayer

hmm, iirc her new world is larger than Earth? Just using Earth's radius, if she flew up 1km (not that high; Denver altitude-ish) she could see & control ash ~112km away (further if it's a larger planet). That's like ~2.6x battleship (Iowa class) main gun range...(control ash she can see, no range limit, & "distance no object" to her new eyes it claims). She could really ruin someone's day w/ that and all the other bits above. Plus, the pranks she can pull... :) Yikes, that means she could hover over LA and make things go boom from San Diego to almost Bakersfield (i.e. all of SoCal).

fbt

Titans kick ass though I always thought she is more a pheniox rising from the ashes. Thanks for the chapter.

Joshua Little

Wood baron of violence.

Joshua Little

Soo... How comes she never brings meat back to the cook so she can make more exotic dishes, also would have expected her to at least have offered to power lever her by now

Sunless

At a minimum, I guess she would need to activate the skill and then have some people try to Identify her. Preferably people more than 250 levels below her so it actually does something. I guess the best way to train the skill would be to walk around large crowds of people below level 255 and draw their attention so they Identify her.

Yes, and yes. I noticed both of those, too. Should be str545 and levels 2107 just as you say. I also noticed that the stat points should be 69 rather than 68.

What a colossal waste of points that would be. If she instead put that 50 points into vitality, she could increase her health pool by more than 1000 points.

Why do you think it does not happen already? Ash and Ember Unity made her ash count as part of her body way back when that skill advanced to 3rd tier. Since she could heal through a tentacle or a cloud of ash, I see no reason why she could not absorb mana through her ash.

*maniacal laughter* .... .... Ahem, yes, yes, good chapter. So you're telling me she can now create an ash spear, add the heat charges, throw it with the boost of 3rd tier Embered Form and controls it with Vision of Ash while it homes on its target and explodes in all its firey glory? Who said Ilea didn't have a ranged attack :p Also, Monstrous didn't level. Interesting. I wonder what are the requirements to level the skill then.

Ivactheseeker

Thanks a lot for the chapter! Wanna point out something minor I noticed, shouldn't her Strength be at 545, because Kin of Ash's bonus was 20 str and the current one is 50, so 515+30. Also, and this is even less important, but shouldn't her general skill levels be at 2107?

SoggyBiscuit

Kinda sad the lava and dragon evolutions didn't seem to boost defenses - and as usual, push for conquest - because they sounded hella cool. HOWEVER, wielding ash and being a healer are literally the things she's known for so no way should she be changing things now.

Nate

Thank you and happy new year!

Andrei

Amen to that!

Nate

ah yes, ICAMs, intercontinental ash missiles

Ato

Holy shit I love this evolution, it would have been cool if the dragon one was stronger and had defense as well but oh well she is now an eternal titan which is badass

Jonathan Walker

Same! Everything has kinda calmed down in the realm of man, it would be a good opportunity. It would be best if she has a soft time limit tho, like she can only be there for a month. Has to stabilize her city and level up her friend from chapter 1 into someone powerful enough to lay down order. Or maybe the blood mage opens up a portal to earth like the portal to meadowland, and she has to step in to defend earth from the The White Lily’s attempts to invade. Now that would be amazing. She could spent ~100 chapters stabilizing earth but feel like an outsider so much that she still needs her time alone to fight more 4 marks

zsell

One plot idea that I remember was being thrown around way back was the idea that earth got a "system apocalypse" at the same time as when Ilea first fell through the cracks between worlds. I'd really love to see an arc where she goes back to earth and finds out how it changed, maybe do some hero stuff, maybe establish a chapter of the medic sentinels :P. It's just such a cool idea that it stuck with me.

L Pedersen

Does that mean she can use her Power armor with her Ash armor now? Does her living/power armor count as a limb? Actually, wait, she can store heat in her ash, and control ash within she can see. Can she now power and remote control her Living Armor? I kind of hope that the second evolution of her third class is horribly embarrassing for her. Like "Shining Medow Knight of Faen Justice" or something equally silly. Or something that shows her leadership abilities without tying her down, lots of fun options here. Happy new year everyone. See you on the other side.

White Neko Knight

Thank you for all the chapters! The upgrades for 500 in this class were really cool and fun to read. Looking forward to seeing how Ilea's fighting style evolves now that she's got both classes upgraded. And to how the ash being an extension of her will affects her daily life in small ways, if at all

Alsia

Maybe she would pick one if Meadow actually was serious and tailor fit the class to her instead of making her a swordwielder.

Johannes Sauer

Maybe upgrade evolve that one more time with core skill point Titans amour or something?

Han Pol

Thank you for you for everything!

Ovl

#betternerfilea jk nice upgrade. I would like to think Kiras Xeno in "To sleep in a sea of stars" is inspired by Ileas ashe, even if it's kinda unlikely.

I love how these these ash skill upgrades give her interesting avenues to continue improving both her ashen magic and sentinel magic in ways beyond just leveling. Some of these skills have soft limitations that she can push further through pushing her limits in control, creativity and will. And I also think these new skills can allow her to push her combat style to new heights once she begins learning how to use them.im kinda also hoping to see her classes exert itself more as just part of her living, talking, getting mad sad or in general would be awesome. It took her till about 350 to grow into her last set of evolutions. Here's to hoping she truly makes these evolutions part of her. Thanks for the chapter

Dominic French

You beautiful bastard! Thank you

Tyler Babcock

If anyone wants to compare to Kin of Ash, here's the chapter she got that class: https://www.royalroad.com/fiction/16946/azarinth-healer/chapter/411126/chapter-301-the-ashen-side-of-things

Ziggy

HEAVY ARMOUR GO TIIIMEEEE!!

Benjamin

Still not too sure what the biggest effect will be, but I know what I'm looking forward too most.

Benjamin

:))) I want she put atleast +50 stats point in dexterity (her dexterity is quite low to follow her hight perception she have and she have nice bonus to dex too so she get more than just +50 stats in

Zarik0

Would be interesting if for the third class evolution she'll be forced by circumstance to take something... sub-optimal for immediate power. Something like these undead or insane classes would make for some drama.

kellanved

Okay the new ashen class is a pretty strong upgrade kinda broken.. I like it. many ways to use the new class and not even a core skill point spent. Wonder if her ash can now be use as a guided long range missile. Maybe something her allies can request now that they can chat. ...... can you sent an ashen construct to Barilia. Maybe the constructs could even talk or somethin?

Han Pol

I liked the octopus one...

Alexander Dupree

Fucking awesome also fuck off 2020

Alexander Dupree

That's Avatar of Ash, it didn't change.

Oh that was a tasty meal indeed! All the excitement's got me twisting with curiosity about what her 3rd class will likely become in a few more levels. I'd say many a thing or simply go with what you yourself have already pointed out, so many of us wouldn't be here and giving up money if you weren't doing something quite right and you've been doing that since the first chapter popped up on RoyalRoad. Thank you for the chapters, loved every second of the new bouts and new discoveries and look foreword to where you take them all in the future, especially looking foreword to the cities reaction upon her return!

Straven

I don't see th resistance reduction anywhere. Has she lost her ability to powerlevel them?

Til Weisheit

she now needs to train up her last class before it reaches 500

PloofDoodle

I'd love it if she sat down in sentinels cafeteria and the bench just broke lol

Senjo

New? She already has that mecha armor. :P

K Hilliard

undead means no more food.

New epic Evil Overlord armor😈. Yay! Scaring random people ❤️

Lowe K. Lyesmith

Thanks for the Chapters!

Cadastral

You are my hero!

Scott

Thanks for the chapters! Happy New Years!

Luciaron

There are a few really nasty new tricks she has up her sleeve. She can now mimic with ash creation and control some of the sorts of stuff her metal mage buddy can do with long ranged attacks and traps. The class evolution has made her a lot more of a tanky bruiser. As much as she bitches about it, the weight gain is incredibly important if she ever intends to use Ember Form's third tier ability to any sort of real effect. Newton's 3rd law is a bitch for anyone who doesn't have the mass to back up their strength. Then again if you do the math she must weigh over a ton when geared up at this point so I would expect to see her having problems with breaking floors and furniture.

Melting Sky

That was never going to happen, can you imagine how much shit meadow would give her?

Jake V

I wonder if 2nd tier Mantle means she'll get mana back from spells that damage her ashen armor, same as magic that hit her body. If so that's a tremendous boost since her healing and regen cycle gets to start immediately instead of only after her armor is breached.

Meadow clearly screwing around with Ilea knowing full well she would rather turn undead before becoming its knight.

MountainFox

i remember when i first started to read this on RR, got left on a cliffhanger and couldn't wait and have been hooked ever since.

reeen

Aw man, it'd be a cool what if chapter had she chosen both meadow classes. Knight by the day, dark knight by night, a true champion of the Meadow

Tentaclour

She'll have to talk to Meadow first, and it should have some advice for her. No way she can level awareness without Meadow's help (or dumping core points into it).

For the level 1000 evolution, Ilea becomes the core of a 100m tall ash titan.

Thanks for the chapters, as always. While I've loved reaching these evolutions at last, her choice for both felt a little too... predictable? With previous evolutions there were usually at least 2-3 viable options but with these it felt like there was just one and as soon as I read its description I knew which she would pick.

Ahumm

aww i wanted reactions from her friends, well mabye next year

Manamaw

Yoink

Thank you!

Andrew

"Control ash you see" doesn't specify her own ash. Can she just look at someones ash and go "thats my spell now"

James Sheridan

Or walk through and kill them with dominion only. Just by being in a 100 metters radius and you fall dead.

Julien Fellegara

Does anyone else have an image of Ilea flying over an attacking army, forming hundreds of spears of ash that slam forwards and detonate....

DustHurricane

Now it would be nice to see her upgrade commons abilities. She is immortal, she can become more than a fighter. I would like to see her shine when dancing, for exemple? Create cute and deadly ashes golems? I need slice of life :)

Julien Fellegara

Ahh new chapters!

StarWolf

You, mister Harthane are the most glorious sonuvawitch on Royal Road and I love your work! Thank you for not leaving us hanging!

Cperkenling

Thanks for the chapters. So, is she going to focus on getting the third class' skills to 3rd30 before hitting 500 with it?

epic.. mind part of me was kind of hoping the switch to lava if it would've been a pure body enhancement route.. but honestly it would affect llea's identity in the story so i'm fine with it.

MacDB

Cheers for the chapter. Gotta say, not many ash focused paths here! Kinda surprised as 300 had loads of them.

Vin Reisling

Thank you for the whole year your writings is perfect in this crappy times

roxurio10003

Praise be!
