Oh I love this series. It was a very intense story. But I love it.

I know you’ve finished the show already. And I’m only partially through this reaction. But something that people forget, women couldn’t own bank accounts or credit card without a male co-signer until 1974. Technically Alma only has access to the money her husband allows.

Btw, I don’t know if you noticed, but the last guy Beth played, Beltik, were also Dudley in the HP movies

Ohhh, did you recognise the twins from the Mardi Gras episode in IWTV?! I remembered when you said you were going to watch this. When I saw them in Interview I just pointed at the TV like Leo 😂 they're great in this show!

This show is fabulous! The younger Beth is so great in her role and Anya is incredible as you get to know her character.
Jolene is a treasure ❤️

Great reaction. I figured this would be up your alley. Even if the episodes are slower paced, it hustles with very quick scenes (especially in the first episode). It’s nitty, gritty, deep character work that touches on trauma, substance abuse, and the isolation of genius. Everything you’ve liked unpacking in the past.
I like how they film the matches too. You don’t need to know a damn thing about chess. It’s all conveyed through the really subtle performances. Anya is just a powerhouse in this.

Orphanages and the like would medicate the kids to keep them docile. When they cut her hair, it reminded me of when I learned about residential schools (Canada (and I think maybe some northern US states?) that took in indigenous children and kept them there away from their families, stripped them of their culture, cut their hair, wouldn't allow them to speak anything but English, converted them to Catholicism, and often abused them physically and sexually. It's really disheartening to learn about the ways children have been treated throughout history and in the current day.
Slightly different topic, but I was researching adoption during the Baby Scoop Era (end of WWII to early 1970s) b/c I'm adopted and born in 1970. Medical staff would medicate newborns so they weren't screaming for their mothers that were no longer there. It's harrowing to think about that! Drugging a newborn so you don't have to listen to it crying. :( :( I was in the hospital for several days; my birth mom never held me. Then, I was in a temporary home for about a month until I was taken home by my adopted parents. Notes from whomever cared for me talked about me having "good lungs" -- um, yeah, I'm sure I was crying for my mother. Don't misunderstand: I love my parents, but I came to realize how much trauma stays with a child, even a baby, when left somewhere without parents. It's even worse for adoptees whose parents are of a different race or adoptees that came from other countries.
