I’m so late but I agree w everything you’re saying about the characterization of Ellie. I thought the first season was a masterpiece & I wanted so badly to feel the same way about this one. I like Bella Ramsey - I’m sure it’s due to the writing and direction. But she comes off like she’s still 14 years old, and I played the games but I’m not the type of person that thinks it has to be the exact same to be good. But what MADE the second game so good for me was seeing the parallels between Ellie and Joel. How they’re so hardened after loss, driven by trauma and anger, survival, and how lovingly morally grey and ruthless they can be. Without it, the tone is lost. I’m cool with all the lovey dovey stuff, but it felt so EASY. Like Ellie is just immediately down to start a family and open to loving and leaning on Dina after experiencing such a great loss? Surely her pregnancy would cause more of a concern because it taints the plan. & then Ellie is just suddenly this really upbeat and child like jokester while Dina do all the strategic heavy lifting? Nah I’m disappointed I needed Ellie to have that DOG in her otherwise it just doesn’t have the same depth. And again, Bella does have it in her, we saw it in the last season, especially episode 8. Ruthless killing does seem “one dimensional” but it’s the bleak psychology behind that brings so much more. And we had that in the first season, and we also had our wholesome and loving moments. They balanced so well in the first one so I am just lost as to what happened here. I’m more interested in what other characters are doing and less interested in Ellie. Which sucks because she’s our main girl whose story we’ve been following.

I'm catching up with this late but I just have to say, regarding E5, as only a viewer of the show, I wasn't disappointed at all in the was the Nora interaction was handled. I don't have anything to compare it to so nothing was different for me. I know the gamers are very protective over the story told in the game, but it's a great story as just a viewer.
As for the ratings going down so much from S1, I understand. I was ready to stop watching after they killed Joel and I know several people (show only viewers) that did stop at that point. Now I'm having to decide if I want to invest my time in S3 since it looks like that is going to be from Abby's POV. I have no interest or investment in Abby. I hope that's not where it's going, but talking to gamers that I know, it seems like that will be it. The spent S1 getting me so invested in Joel and Ellie! I was so psyched for S2 and then Joel is dead. I know she is your girl from the game but I just don't care about her at all.✌️💖

Ep 7 - Ellie said that she wanted to forgive Joel. Ellie questioning it doesn't mean that she thinks they were justified. I'm an empathetic person and I think that Abby should fucking die violently for her bullshit cause her dad made his choice and stood in the way. That was on him.
Ellie doesn't have to triangulate. She can SEE the aquarium. Now YOU'RE making her dumber than the show is making her. You're the one committing the crime here by going beyond what the writing did. Just because she couldn't do geometry math doesn't mean that she isn't resourceful enough to get from visible point a to point b.
Honestly showing me video game Abby just makes me wonder how the hell you can like that POS even more...

EP 6 - a bit of meta happens here - Eugene's actor was in the Matrix, and Ellie has a poster for The Matrix on her wall at home. It would have been better to call him by his real name and play it that he was his real self from the Matrix and have Ellie recognize him, lol.

Also, at the end of Ep 5 with Nora, you entirely missed the fact that when Nora told him all that stuff, she said "I know", and up until that point, we didn't know that Joel had told Ellie that he did all those things. We thought the lie still stood and that he never told her, she said she didn't talk to him after the dance, and based upon the therapy earlier he seemed like he had never told her. So it was a revelation that he had told her.

I still fucking hate Abby, even knowing that was her dad. No matter what they told us. Cause like you said, she was an asshole. They made sure she was not as likeable because they made everyone else not as interested in what she was doing. A game is a totally different story telling vehicle. You can sit there and play it and find out in a few hours. You are talking about people waiting WEEKS to find out, and if you think the voice actress got hate, can you imagine how much hate would have happened that way?
Also, you gotta let them cook. It is like you just wanted them to have the one dimensional character from the game. You say there is eventual nuance, but why not have nuance the whole time? This plays better on TV. A game can be one dimensional and be fine.

It is literally written by the same people who wrote and created the game. They are allowed to reinterpret and remix their own creation. This is a great reason to not look at source material before you watch a show or a movie. People who have issues with this can chill out, a TV show is different than a video game. Maybe the people who created the game didn't like what they did the first time and wanted to change it around the second time? There were changes made to TWD, too.
People need to treat something like this as a reinterpretation in an alternate universe. And since it is made by the creators of the original game, they get to do it however they want it.

I haven't watched your whole vid yet, I just finished watching you pre-tall, but I had to pause it to say I agree with you one million percent. Ellie is so watered down. It doesn't hit the same at all, much like Joel's death.
Very disappointed so far. I wanted to love this so much, but they are just not staying true to the characters.
I think they lost a lot of viewers, and I don't know if an Abbey driven season 3 is going to keep them interested.

54:33 I actually think the shots of the spores are, in some weird way, quite beautiful. I know that sounds insane b/c I know they're deadly. But the work they did to create that setting is stunning.
