In that one scene, Tommy was smoking opium, which apparently was extremely prevalent in England around the late 1800s (and was also used liberally to treat wounded soldiers in WWI.) Also, I'd love to hear you go on about this show for an hour or two if you're ever feeling up for it! There's a lot of stuff going on, and it gets more complex as the series continues.
