That detail was not included in any report, but given the photographs of the campsite I'm guessing they were packed up along with any gear she had.

Smoking pot doesn't make you automatically retarded bro. They prob just didn't know what to do. Should they have forcefully held down a naked 19 yr old female? Also they're all just kids, none of them likely had any real common sense.

She sounds like she was early schitzo. Also she prob never wore shoes and was able to walk through the woods with now shoes no prob. Als there may have been less brush on the other side 13 yrs ago.

I'm honestly appalled that such a massive clue was ignored by law enforcement.

I was thinking Deliverance right as you said "lawless behavior," and then hearing the interview with Lisa following one possibility to its conclusion of a vilely similar scene. I do wonder about the mushrooms, or if she was in methadone withdrawal in early recovery. Tragic all around. Also, a nice touch for you to include her and Michael's music. 🕊️

Did her friends leave her clothes there or did they pack them up?

As always, you've done a stellar job. I'm picturing her friends high as a kite, sitting around a campfire and watching her wander away across the creek. "Dude! What do we do now?" Passing the doobie to the next one, and saying, "Oh...she'll be back." Back to toking. Maureen had a substance abuse problem and told people she was clean, but maybe she wasn't. She communicated with someone about mushrooms. Hallucinogens coupled with mental illness is a sorry combination. I think she knew about the campground because she'd been there before...because it's a great place to take drugs and not be bothered. Thanks for all of the thought and effort that you put into each one of these episodes!

“I got nuthin against rednecks” one of nicks best phrases 😅😅

Sadly, they almost never describe what kind of dogs were used. But there was 9 dog teams and there was no note of any of them getting any scent. I hope the police investigated that witness statement further, but I doubt it. Identifying those men would be tough and it would require a lot of time and effort. I imagine it was easier to write this one off quick due to the circumstances.

The Missing Enigma

Hard to say for a lot of those questions. My guess is that Maureen's friends were used to hearing rowdy guys as there had been a lot of them that weekend. I get the sense that they did not view Marueen's initial disappearance as much of an emergency. Everyone should have been reinterviewed after the new information came out.

The Missing Enigma

Yes, that is the same national forest. A lot of bodies buried out there apparently.

I concur with you that “Three unpleasant guys going in the same direction a naked, confused teenager was last seen going, and then gunshots” sounds terrible and should have been investigated better. Maybe the police did leaving no clues they did or not giving them to you, but this I leave to your more than adequate judgment and experience. I, for starters, would question again the other three boys about the gunshots; maybe they could miss the guys, but if you’re worried and waiting for your friend you wouldn’t miss those. Do you know if bloodhounds or cadaver dogs were used? This should have been a chance for them to shine, a naked person live or dead should leave a very good scent track especially if she has to scramble through the bushes. On a side note: if we take Maureen’s plans at face value they weren’t just “uncomfortably weird”, we are talking of a very, very painful way to commit suicide which makes Chris McCandless look an hardened bushman. One could wonder, once finished her pilgrimage, how she supposed to come back stark naked. Of course confused people did this and worse but maybe she wasn’t planning to come back at all. If I remember well the suicide angle was discarded, I don’t know if a faked disappearance with some external help was evaluated and discarded as well. It would work like a charm.

This one makes my head hurt. So many things just don't make any sense. It's like you took a handful of pieces from four or five different jigsaw puzzles, tossed them in a bag, and shook it up. How can it be that no one else mentioned the three loud men? How can it be no one ever followed up on the one report the authorities had? Why does the story of Maureen's departure seem so improbable, given the terrain? Why didn't anyone remain in the campsite while the others went for help? What possessed them to go to that place to begin with? It would seem that the campground was busier and more accessible in 2013. Road 54 was not far away, but that slope up to the ridge is crazy steep. If Maureen could have made it that far, then the possibilities get very dark.

Well done, as always!!

Boy, this one is unsettling. It seems plausible to me that she was high and perished from exposure, a fall, etc. That area is so remote and overgrown and full of easy ways to disappear. I think it’s also very possible that foul play was involved- perhaps involving the group of guys, maybe her friends, and heck, a stranger who came across a naked woman wandering in the woods. It’s a very sad story and I feel for her family. Isn’t this the same area of GP NF in which 3 bodies were found (I think 2 deaths were explained, but not the third, a skull?)? Also, where a man was found naked and murdered this past summer? Also- I completely understand your sense of “this is creepy” without knowing exactly why you feel that way aside from lack of animal noises, etc. When I get that feeling on a trail, I leave. I figure better safe than sorry and heck if I feel uneasy then I’m probably not enjoying it anyway. Gotta listen to your instincts!
