The Disturbing Case Of The Mummified Family In The Colorado Rockies

I got to thinking about the last woman alive in the camp. The two, or one depending on the circumstances, had to move the dead boy from the tent over to the trees which would have been shocking and horrifying for his mother. Then one of the two women dies and is then zipped up in her sleeping bag like a shroud, leaving the remaining woman to emotionally deal with the horror of the situation as she lay dying. Unbelievably tragic and completely avoidable. I feel so bad for the boy who had no choice but to go along with his paranoid and unwell mother.

2024-01-21 03:55:02 +0000 UTCHere's a good article, apparently published two days ago, with more information. What a sad story! https://nymag.com/intelligencer/article/colorado-springs-family-christine-rebecca-vance-off-the-grid.html

2024-01-20 12:36:38 +0000 UTCNick, you always set such a respectful and objective tone with your videos. And to show respect for your house, I have...edited...my original comments. Significantly. As a former backpacker who now (after permanent injuries) spends most day-hikes picking up trash, the images of that "campsite" really sent me into orbit. I also read several articles about this family which only made it worse. The Comments: Chris McCandless died a sad and illustrative death on self-styled, poor-wilderness-doctrine, search for esoteric beauty. Had he possessed even bare minimum understanding/knowledge or preparedness (a map), he would be alive now and we wouldn't know his name. Rebecca Vance killed her son and her sister pursuing a similarly self-styled "live off the land" fantasy driven by paranoia, deep state conspiracy theory, and "Prepper Mom" social media accounts. Had she read about McCandless, she might have made some better choices, but probably not. Also, it's another case where had there been some serious intervention, this child might still be alive.

2024-01-20 01:47:03 +0000 UTCI think all your viewers can handle the gruesome photos!! Do they have any idea when they may have died? It’s weird that heavy snow didn’t distort the tent or animals didn’t get into anything and scatter stuff, truly a bizarre situation. Thanks for all you do Nick !!:)

2024-01-19 23:30:43 +0000 UTCI watched for the second time and I’m so bothered by the car, they knew who the car was registered to, where was the car towed? Was family made aware that the car was found? It’s all so bizarre. If they were so close to a known campground why didn’t they hike to that campground? All these questions that can never be answered, absolutely heartbreaking

2024-01-19 19:45:56 +0000 UTCThat's a good question. The camp appears to be less than a quarter mile from the parking area. They may have done a quick search at some point, but the Forest Service was dealing with a lot of abandoned vehicles, semi-permanent camps, and generally overwhelmed facilities and staff during and after the pandemic. They apparently just saw it as an abandoned vehicle. There were a lot of those in these parts, and still are.

2024-01-19 18:24:31 +0000 UTCThank you for making this video, and using your sensible, respectful approach. This is a case that never made any sense to me. I live about 60 miles as the crow flies from the camp. I've lived much closer, and the winters are long and brutal. Gunnison is frequently the coldest place in the "lower 48", so the winters are like what one would expect a few hundred miles north. People living in Colorado Springs certainly should know this, especially if they were looking for a place to spend the winter. Looking at the gear they had, and taking into consideration the facts as they are known, I would be very surprised to learn they survived until the time their car was towed. It easily could have had a dead battery long before that. Camping up there in July can be brutal for someone not prepared for it. Building a shelter makes me think they were planning to stay for an extended time, and not just landing there on a whim. A sad story all around.

2024-01-19 17:48:27 +0000 UTCWhy didn’t anyone identify the car and look for them when they took the car away?

2024-01-19 15:34:00 +0000 UTCHi Nick. Thanks for another great video. Reminds me of this Montana story from 2009. Sad to see how uneducated and unprepared someone can be in Montana or any place that's wilderness. Same type of folk I believe that treat Yellowstone park like a zoo. Living in SW Montana my entire life, I've seen these things happen again and again. Anyway, thought you'd find this sad story interesting. Thank you for all you do. heraldnet.com/news/woman-freezes-to-death-in-remote-montana-cabin/
