That is true. The issue is that the food was not stored in the trailer where the men were staying. It was housed in a locker inside a nearby shed. We can't be certain, but it seems like the men missed the food during their search of the property.

Hey TME, there are quite a few videos on this topic saying how the forestry service trailer had enough food to sustain all five of the men for at least several months or even over a year. Was this simply false, or is it something else?

This is the best documentary I've seen about this case, it was well researched and very professional.

I had a whole long comment written about why I didn't think it was likely that all five boys would have fled out of panic, but then I got to thinking; what if ONE of the boys ran off? I really don't think Schons would have been intimidating enough to five men (even if they were varying degrees of disabled) to drive them into such a panic that they would walk up to 10 miles in freezing temperatures. This is especially true if Mathias was there because, despite his mental illness, he was otherwise competent to respond in a reasonable manner (ie- not leave the car because of an argument).
But it may not have taken all five of the boys to panic. If just one panicked (let's say Huett) and ran up the road to avoid a possible confrontation, then the other boys may have chased after him. Perhaps they chased after their friend, and ended up far from the car while doing so. At that point it wouldn't be uncommon for anyone to panic and make a series of bad decisions. Who knows, maybe they thought they were heading back to the car because they were disoriented.
I agree with you that I think there are a number of strange coincidences in this story that have misled people for years. Considering that Schons had a heart attack, spent the night freezing in a car, and then walked miles through the snow to reach help, I'm willing to give his account a lot of leeway. There's no way he was in his right mind when he first got back to the bar and was likely suffering from hypothermia.
But, still, none of this explains why the boys were there in the first place.

I imagine the simplest explanation is probably the correct one as alluded to in the video. An argument happened as a result of road rage on behalf of the gentleman in the beetle. He realized they were neurodiverse and went even harder with rage as a result of his feelings about his daughter.
The boys ran into the night…they found the cabins by chance.
It’s strange but I think it’s a coincidence that his daughter and the boys may have run in the same circles.
When he said he should have done “this two years ago” he likely meant letting his rage out.

I used the Yuba County Sheriff's case file as my main resource in creating these two videos. I've watched a number of takes on this case from other popular youtubers but I think almost all of them only use articles that were written by newspapers as a resource. Most of these articles are seriously lacking in detail and for a long while it was the best information people had to work with.

So baffling!! I listened to all two parts of your take on the case, I also listened to Yuba city five part one and two by CompulsionCast on Youtube. Both of you did serious work and covered the case really well, yet there are considerable discrepancies between your and the other guy's accounts of what happened. No wonder - the case has been cold for 4 decades, it can't be easy to piece together now. I would still like to try though!!! The fact that the case is so old can be somewhat positive - we are not under pressure as were the detectives working it back then. And we have internet nowadays, that's a big advantage. Let's seriously try this - I am trying to setup a group of websleuths who would try to create timelines, maps, verify facts working via collaborative software. Would be great if you and the other guy joined. https://www.websleuths.com/forums/threads/yuba-county-five.452692/post-18149311

I watched this second part like 30 times(I exaggerate) cause I kept trying to stay awake(I started it late/early in the night/morning after work). The one thing I kept waiting for was if they found the keys. Once I heard they found the keys, that's when I very much suspected that foul play was involved. I believe they were forced into those woods by gun point. I believe there was a red truck. I believe the schone guy was either up there by coincidence, or was up there becuase something was planned out, but either way saw everything that happened, and the heart attack was part of it. Remember the cars were further apart according to another witness that drove past them. I'd have to listen to the first video, but irregardless, they seem to have been much farther apart, which rules out the original theory that they were following too close before the bug got stuck. I already made a VERY long comment below this, if you get emails about replies from patreon comments, you should read my other comment below. Thanks

I remember this case from another true crime yt channel years ago, but it wasn't this in depth. One thing I VERY strange. How much of a coincidence it must be that some of the boys were seen with a man and a boy that owned a red truck, and that Shone(sp?) mentions an almost exact type of truck that was seen at night. If he was there, and he yelled at the boys, why were their cars so far apart initially? Did they drive backwards down the hill, then get out in fear? The cars only came together later, as told by a second witness saying the cars were closer together the next day or hours later, however much time had passed. We he said "I should have done this years ago" in the bar, this makes me think something happened that was possibly planned out. Now back then there were no cells phones, and no one remembers shone using a payphone in the bar before he left, so how would they have coordinated this all? One thing I was thinking about. What id one or more of the boys was involved in something wrong. Like maybe they wronged someone. Perhaps molested that little boy that was in the woods in the cabin, or something homosexual was going on. This was the 70s and things like this would have been kept quiet in a smaller town. Maybe they boys did something to shones daughter. Yes I know this is all speculation. But I can't believe this red truck is a coincidence. The story in Brownville(?) where this was an alternate sighting of the boys with a red truck, did they even know there was a red truck in the original witness statement? Or that there was a red truck involved in the past with at least one of the boys?(boys cause they're all much younger than me). I can't help but think that the brownsville incident wasn't some kind of red herring event, planted to throw the cops from going into the woods sooner. As if more of the town was somehow in on it. I truly think that going back to the red truck(and its owner) is the key to the mystery. Much crazier things have happened in true crime with small towns in real life before. Normally I always tell people they are making a story to hard, it most likely happened in a simple way, there is no conspiracy. But this time, I really think there is. Maybe the last body wasn't found becuase he did walk out of there, but was picked up, thinking he was being rescued, only to find out they were waiting for someone to make it out of the woods and killed him, to hide the body else where. The body will be found eventually.

My husband and I have loved watching your videos and are so glad to help support you in your work!
My husband is very ill with stage 4 cancer. he can’t be as active but these videos are a nice distraction. Hearing the story of these unfortunate young men reminds us of how much we have to be thankful for.

Excellent video. I had never heard of this case, and it is a shame that it's still unsolved. I think the young men were asked by someone at the town of the event they went to, asked them for a ride back to their hometown. As they were nearing home, that person (or persons) pulled out a gun and forced them to drive to that remote area in the woods and standard them. Maybe they were attacked before being forced from their vehicle, but it is hard to believe they just left and walked into the woods of their own accord.
