Usyk beats Fury (again)

Plenty to talk about today so stop reading and start listening!

Hey thanks for jumping back in! I have done a top 10 FIGHTS of all time on this here Patreon, and also did a top 10 boxers of all time which you can find on YouTube. Just search ‘The Fistorical Perspective’ it’s an episode I did with Conor Ruebusch way back when. I guess that episode is as much about the ‘philosophy’ of what a top 10 ATG boxer should be as much as the actual top 10 but let me know your thoughts!

Bit late to the party Kyle, catching up after Xmas - I have to ask though given your reflections in this ep, any chance you could give us who you think are the top 10 boxers of all time in another ep and why? I'm sure we'd all love to hear it.

Dbarron91

116-112 is 8 rounds to 4. 2 rounds closer and it woulda been a draw. So 115-113 is your score? That's not particularly different from the official score.

Bryan Gan

I certainly didn’t think the fight was a robbery but I did think it was a slight bit closer than the score cards showed. I probably didn’t count the body work as much as I should have. Great fight though.

Another thing to consider is that MMA fans are absolutely clueless about how a boxing match is scored. They use the MMA scoring criteria and shout robbery.

Great point about how casuals view competitive fights, btw. People my age who grew up seeing Floyd outclass JMM (and then another generation fed on the Tank Davis' and Naoya Inoues of the world just smash hapless contenders) have been rendered unable to evaluate competitive bouts. Add that to the echo chamber of following only the socials of people/fighters they agree with, and the narrative in their heads becomes so much more convincing than reality itself, let alone the well put together takes like yours.

Bryan Gan

I find this fight to be one of those 'competitive but not close' ones. Fury lost more rounds compared to the first bout, just by smaller margins.

Bryan Gan

Thanks, I hope I articulated it well enough!

honestly super interesting point about the cruiserweight/heavyweight consolidation, seems like one of those things that feels obvious once you hear it but never came to mind before

Glad we’re on the same page! Hope you enjoyed the pod.

Loved hearing the thump of Usyk’s left hand on Fury’s belly all night. Definitely not as exciting as the first fight, but absolutely a more comfortable win for Usyk.
