The year is 1980 and MUD1, the first Multi User Dimension, had just been created on ARPAnet. You shut the blinds, dial in to a Terminal Interface Processor, and LOG IN.

From the MUDs came life: MMORPG’s, which were co-opted to become intra-business communications, which eventually spawned AIM. From there we got Club Penguin which some say heavily inspired battle royale video games and finally, the grey box we know as Discord. MUDs tried to marry social elements with RPG gameplay, but overtime these 2 aspects have become mostly separated from each other. With WizMUD, we wanted to bring that good stuff back babbyyy— by making a game where neither element overshadowed the other and instead considered each other lovingly :,) Due to the obtuseness of online infrastructure and its high operational costs, large game studios have generally been the ones with the keys to the castle, grind-maxxing and loot boxing players to rationalize the high cost of dev and upkeep. What kind of new online experiences could we have with cheaper, more practical and social centered solutions to the problems of developing online games??
