Eliminating Waste

Hi!

Somewhat important post for all of my patrons today... Patreon take 8% of my earnings, of your money, and they can't keep getting away with this!

As I'm a budding web developer with a can-do attitude, I've decided to invest some time into integrating a payment handler, Stripe, directly into the app.

It's a frustratingly large task but it will literally save money from being wasted over time, and as I always say, every dollar helps.

Benefits:

How do you move your support from Patreon to Stripe:

Post to be updated as I remember/realise important things to share – it's 5am and I've lost it but I wanted to share now and collect your feedback!

You can check it out at https://bray.tech/settings/subscriptions

Update: 18/12 (5 days later): it's been going well and I've teethed out a lot of the minor issues you'd expect from a new system. I've added Discord role support and built a small bot (this was surprisingly satisfying to do). Months ago, as a part of my efforts to support Patreon sucking, I added push notifications just for me that would immediately buzz me when it would break. It does this almost every day. I pray for the day it stops.

as a patron, I prefer to use Patreon, because that centralizes what I'm giving to all creators. I'd rather not have to manage separate subscriptions across different systems, which I already have too many of. I'm sorry to hear Patreon is causing you difficulties! I will take that into account, but I wanted to voice why some of us may prefer to keep using Patreon over your built-in subscription. In any case, love your work, and best wishes for everything!

yeah, this is why I've been telling myself patreon is worth the 8% for months but it's egregious when they offer such a poor service. I think so long as the distinction between the app and stripe itself is clear, it'll be alright as for ko-fi, they offer no useful API so I wouldn't be able to automate rewards!

I’ve had quite a few people move over to GitHub; 100% of the money goes to the developers. Unfortunately I paid for the year, so you don’t see any benefit on your new system from me until December 2024.

Have you looked at ko-fi? I'd think managing a payment system and such would be a headache. Plus, I think a lot of people are used to middlemen services like patreon and trust them, but will be far less trusting of a website that asks for direct payment, even if it is processed by stripe. That's my 2 cents. Edit: ko-fi costs $8/m for the creator (you / Tom), but how much time do you need to save vs integrating and managing your stripe code to justify $8.

Can't emphasise enough how important it is to me to hear any concerns or feedback as I understand as well as anyone how something looks and works can affect whether or not I want to part with my money
