Week of Hell
Added 2022-12-09 04:16:48 +0000 UTCCaptain's log, Stardate 51268.4. This morning's attack destroyed the power grid on deck 11. No casualties this time but the replicator system was badly damaged. We've gone to emergency rations. As a result, the situation has gotten a little worse. Environmental controls continue to fail, seven decks have been rendered uninhabitable and we've had to relocate the crew. Quarters are close, nerves are frayed, and I'm not sure what's more difficult to maintain – Voyager's systems or the crew's morale. What's important… is that we're together, working towards a single goal – survival.
Star Trek Voyager episode "Year of Hell"
I don't have a crew or a ship but I've for sure had a tough few days.
I had to rebuild a server (remote hosted virtual machine) from the vapours of what was. Some data loss occurred such as synced Braytech settings, Patron/Destiny membership associations, and push notification settings.
It really sucked. There exists a Discord server for Bungie API discussion, and I lent on them for both assistance and emotional support. Very thankful to a handful of them for replying to my many messages.
I bricked the server by bailing on a dist upgrade midway through package configuration. I was using the diff compare view on my Redis config. I couldn't work out how to exit the view so I eventually started mashing CTRL C.
I now know that that was Vim. Infuriating and embarrassing. I am now subject to the programmer meme of can't exit Vim.
But Tom, where were your backups? I don't do them for this server in question because I can't afford them, but I do have managed backups for my other server as I host other people's data there!
I'm exceptionally tired. It's astounding how much time and energy goes into anything related to computers. Even as someone who has spent so much time using them, I still lose touch with how long the most basic of tasks take.
In any case, there are some benefits. You make the most out of shitty situations, right... Upgrades, improvements, optimisations.

@tom, sorry to hear of the trouble. I am willing to sponsor backups on this server if this is of interest. Your app is amazing and continues to lead the pack.

2022-12-09 15:53:06 +0000 UTCI don't think i would want to play the game without what you've built. It's amazing; complicated; and a wonder that one person maintains it. You have my undying support.

2022-12-09 14:54:46 +0000 UTCI think all of us who have done anything in comp sci or IT have had a similar day/week/year at some point. Thank you for sticking with it. I hope you get some good rest soon. All of us appreciate your work.

2022-12-09 05:30:50 +0000 UTCI've been right where you're at several times. It's embarrassing, exhausting, and no fun to look at what we can do to avoid that situation in the future. Take a breather, get some rest, it'll all still be here when later.

2022-12-09 04:51:30 +0000 UTCDude, you're awesome. For what its worth I'm a VIMer and I have a similar reaction if I accidentally end up in emacs. Hope you get some rest.
