Hair Metal, Character Death and The Late Orson Welles!
That's right, today as a treat for you all and as the first official side-podcast for the 5 dollar tier we're giving you guys the FIRST Explode When Defeated podcast ever recorded! Last Summer while we were setting everything up to do Discuss All Monsters, we decided to record a separate episode as a test to share with some close friends so we could get some feedback before we formally launched with our first episodes on Godzilla.
This episode was on Transformers: The Movie, the 1986 classic that scarred 80s kids everywhere with its brutal discarding of most of the entire cast of the original Transformers series, to make way for a new line of toys and characters to sell for the next season of the show. This cynical and bold move has had repercussions on pop culture that we're STILL dealing with today! (So Criterion... it might be time to put it in the collection...)
Because of its nature as the first podcast we recorded, it's definitely not perfect and the general quality is lower than that of the current episodes of Discuss All Monsters. We've definitely learned a lot about editing and perfecting our setup since recording this. I personally revisited the episode though and I still find it really enjoyable and fit for release as a bonus. Maybe at some point in the future we'll revisit Transformers: The Movie and give it its dues in a more fleshed out, "professional" manner.
Enjoy the episode and look out in the coming weeks for our miniseries on the original Kamen Rider!
