Duo (1 PC, multiple users)
Added 2023-10-03 09:44:44 +0000 UTC
What is Duo?
Duo is an HDR-compatible, headless, bare-metal, multi-seat streaming server based around TermWrap, Sunshine, Moonlight and a variety of custom drivers & libraries.
You can think of it as a version of Sunshine that allows multiple users to use the same computer at the same time without occupying the computer's physical session or otherwise interfering with each other.
Each session's resolution, refresh rate, scaling and dynamic range are controlled directly via Moonlight.
The typical "1 PC, multiple users" scenario that we all know and love.
Let it empower your handheld device
You own a handheld device that can't handle the latest games, but still want to play them?
Start a Duo instance on your gaming computer, connect to it, and play that game, all while still being able to use your computer normally.
Share your gaming hardware with friends or family
Your friend / family member doesn't own a decent enough computer but you do?
Start a Duo instance on your gaming computer, let them connect to it, and play that fancy multiplayer game together that they just can't run right.
Host your own cloud gaming server
Enable UPnP on your router, toggle the according setting in your instance's admin panel and your computer is now reachable anywhere in the world.
A step-by-step guide on how to get started with Duo.
A list of frequently asked-about issues and how to resolve them.
A list of known issues that we really can't do all too much about due to technical limitations.

Switch version of moonlight doesn't seem to be able to connect to the duo's sunshine and it would just timed out. Connecting to the standalone version of sunshine however, works with no issue. I'm guessing it's because the specific port doesn't really work, any help? however, it works flawlessly on Other machines. thanks for the magic!
Btw, I've reported this issue to the switch's moonlight dev team here if you or anyone want to track https://github.com/XITRIX/Moonlight-Switch/issues/221#issuecomment-2692097786

Good job, this is an excellent tool given it can be a bit of a mess to set up anything remotely similar manually. I don't know if this would be possible given the remote desktop setup, but is there any way to play audio on the host session instead of doing so remotely? This is not a conventional setup but I'm trying to use the same audio output for both my deck and my PC essentially, using my PC as host.

With v1.50 I setup one regular instance and one Sandbox instance, one was port 47985 and the other 48005 and set both to autolaunch however I only get the Open Web Interface for one or the other but never both everytime I restart my PC. I set each instance to use it's own seperate local usersname and password and assigned 25% to the sandbox for memory (have 64GB) and can get both to work succesfully simulteneously

Excellent product. 0 issues with the GitHub version for months so my nephew was able to play his games on his potato laptop from my rig. I've subscribed to have an extra instance to access my PC from my mobile but even if it logs in my account, it runs a sandboxed version of it instead of controlling my pc remotely.
I could trick Steam Link to access it but I wanted to ask the community if there's a way to access it from Moonlight.
Best purchase of the year, definitely!

Works great for me as of 2025, working off a laptop rtx 3070, win 10 pro 22H2.
Automatic resolution switching doesn't always work between different aspect ratios, but not a huge deal.
Appreciate you making this, hope you can keep updating and making improvements.

I've just set this up as I've been having trouble with:
- Virtual display drivers only working for HDR in some games
- HDMI EDID emulator always having blown out HDR
The experience setting this up was very smooth, but I'm still having issues with HDR in some games. For instance, Horizon Zero Dawn HDR works great, but RE7 Biohazard and Tony Hawks Pro Skater 1+2 show HDR as a greyed out option in the game menu. Is there something I can do to have HDR work globally?

I use Duo to run headless hardware accelerated RDP sessions using VMs with Intel SR-IOV vGPUs. This way, I can create my own hosted virtual workstations to which I can connect from anywhere via a VPN.
And best of all, I can disconnect from the session and it will stay as it was. I can get back to whatever I was doing at any time with all my programs running and files open. This is important, since I mostly use this for work (coding, DevOps) and having everything the way it was when I last left it saves a lot of time.
Could not get any of those so-called "virtual display" adapters to work with Sunshine but Duo worked just fine.
As a developer and tinkerer, I know what it takes to get things working. Thank you ! Supporting you is money well spent.
One small comment: while it's convenient, I would not suggest anyone to use/enable UPnP function.
UPnP is a security nightmare which should generally be avoided whenever possible. That's one of the first things I disable outright when configuring any router.

since you qre just starting out and i just setup mine yesterday i the steps are 1. no sunshine should be installed i think as i had problems initially. reinatall at the end. Also install the gamepad driver mentioned on the instructions. 2. create a new local user on your pc. 3. install the duo. 3. on duo manager create a new instance. select the new user for the instance. 4. click the open web instance on the new instance. might need to wait a while to be not greyed out. this will open sunshine. 5. setup sunshine user pw. 6. on your moonlight search for the connection and get the pin. generate the pin on sunshine and the pit the name of the instance on the device. 7. download sunshine and set it up which is the one that will be used by the main user on pc. 8. optional enable upnp on the network configuration after pairing so it can be accessed outside the network. can probably be done also to the other user though i didnt try it. Tested it by opening the same game at the same time it worked but using on screen gamepad of moonlight actual controlled both connections. maybe if it is a hardware gamepad it wount be an issue.

Just to clarify the issue I'm having.
Installed Duo on a Windows 11 PC. Using my Laptop as the Moonlight Client.
I created the First Instance, started it, and paired with it in my Moonlight Client.
The Desktop that I get (of my Host PC) has a very low, 1024 x 768 type of resolution. When I go into Settings > Display Settings, it doesn't allow me to change resolution. It says "Display settings cannot be changed from a remote session".
I don't see any settings for resolution in the Duo Manager, and in Sunshine I do have a lot of Resolutions & FPS "advertised".
So how do I get 4K 120, which is native for both my Host PC and my Laptop.
Thanks.

Forced signout after Wake on Lan
I'm encountering a strange issue with using wake on lan. After 2 minutes, my gaming PC is logging me out of Windows 10. For these 2 minutes, Duostream will not work. I have to log in afterwards and then Duostream will become active. When I start the PC normally via the power button, Duostream starts as intended and the PC does not log me out.
Link to youtube video which shows the issue: [https://youtu.be/w5s13lainSg](https://youtu.be/w5s13lainSg)
I move the mouse and click out of the time/clock windows to demonstrate that this is not caused by 2 minutes of idle time
Set Up
- Host: Gaming PC with a ASRock B650I Lightning Wifi Mini ITX AM5 Motherboard. PCIE Device Power on is enabled and wake on lan is working as intended. I did a clean install of Windows 10 last night which makes me think that the issue might be caused by a security feature in the BIOS.
- Streaming via Duostream. However I have had the same issue streaming with just Sunshine / Moonlight.
- Client: Steam Deck using Moonlight. Gamestream in GeForce Experience is enabled which I think causes Moonlight to detect a seperate instance of my Gaming PC.
[Autologon](https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/downloads/autologon) is enabled which causes the PC to log in automatically but a password is set in the Duostream configuration manager.
Does anyone have any thoughts or suggestions on whats causing this?

I run BigBox and noticed when I run it locally or with Sunshine it runs buttery smooth but when i use Duo and it is doing Sunshine (within the RDP session) it is slow as hell. Any fix for that? I think some games or apps like BigBox do not run to well within the RDP session created by Duo that is streamed via Sunshine to Moonlight
Lami W.
2024-07-12 19:09:51 +0000 UTC
Likely because the video source is an RDP session.
This app creates headless RDP sessions using your username and password and installs a hook dll to enable frame capture from them. This is also how it gets away without a virtual display on headless systems as RDP provides a virtual indirect rendering display itself.
This is also the reason why games don't run in full screen as RDP doesn't support that.

Is it normal for the stream to look jagged? Like there's some aliasing going on. It's not as sharp as my normal sunshine/moonlight set up.
Is this due to the lack of full screen for games?

Good to know. So it won't close steam on the main user that is logged in?
For example,
User 1 - main monitor/user I launch stardew valley on steam account 1
User 2 - on the device streaming my PC via Duo, on playnite I can launch stardew valley with steam account 2 (steam API configured)
Doing this, it will not close steam on user 1? And both users can play together?

Haha that's what I did, I just use Steam Big Picture. Steam ROM Manager and UWPHook does the trick. The only issue is EA games that launches behind Steam, so I bind some keys to do alt-tab. It's been awesome and feels like a legit console.

Hey, I'm not sure I understand correctly, but are you trying to use the same user account as the one you're logged on? I think that's not the use case for Duo, it's best to use another local windows user account.
For save files etc, it should be not an issue if you're using the same login for steam, epic, EA, etc, most of them have cloud saves. Although most can't be logged in at the same time so you can't run the same game on both (moonlight session and normal session).
At least that's my experience with it.
The issue I have right now is :
- Gamepad in normal session also impact duo session
- Playnite seems choppier (this could be playnite issue and moonlight)
- windows update often breaks Duo, so I just use script to pause update for now.

Hi, my duo once the service starts seems to cause a random issue that re-occurs every 1-2 minutes. It's opening up my file explorer and connects to my Google Drive, then it also seems to close down my steam altogether. Only happens once I begin the Duo Manager service
Edit: Found it was an issue when I selected the same user profile I'm on with the session settings. Had to create a separate user profile for this but I am not sure how this will go with save files, etc...

Just chiming in that Duo was the solution to my woes. Been fighting with Sunshine picking up my desktops iGPU because I run mostly headless, so it rarely worked right as I was trying to move away from Parsec. Installed the GitHub version, and boom it was a success so I immediately came here for the full version.
Only quibble, and it's probably me so help would be appreciated, is I can't access the Duo Manager web interface from my laptop and can only get to it from the PC it is installed on. I'd like to turn Sunshine off unless I'm actively using it since it pings the dGPU to maximum clock speed which isn't necessary when not playing games.

Hi all I have what is likely a dumb question but trying to figure how to use this for my specific use case. I have 2 steam accounts and a (somewhat) powerful gaming PC rig. I want to be able to serve 2 handheld gaming devices (1 using steamlink as it is android based, 1 using the built in Steam Remote play). This issue I'm running into is that setting up separate accounts to stream in Duo is no problem but steam only allows steam to be running on one account per installation regardless of how many steam accounts there are. Has anyone sorted a workaround that avoids having to go virtualization route as that is outside my abilities currently.

First of all, thank you very much for this amazing app; it works excellently. One issue I'm facing is that I also have Sunshine running on my main account.
Let's say I have a Main Account #1 and my Second Account #2. I want to stream #2 with Duo while continuing to work on #1. However, maybe later I only want to stream #1 to my Steam Deck via Moonlight and not use #2 at all.
How do I proceed? Currently, I have two Sunshine sessions running, one for #1 without Duo and another for #2 with Duo. This leads to a double input.

This is awesome, even more for remote workstations than gaming in my case, considering it significantly reduces overhead of windows for VMs.
Is there any workaround, or in planning to limit resources? GPU/RAM/CPU resources per user. I know its what VMs do, but i would prefer this, since it removes a lot of overhead.

I had similar struggles! So I will try to be lovely :) Consider this to be like an alpha. I just tried a fresh install of 1.1.0 and couldn't connect but 1.0.9 worked.
Here's my quick guide:
1. Make sure you're using a local Windows account. Not a Microsoft account.
2. Install Duo and open 'Duo Manager'.
Note: I get 'out of memory' errors when I try to install. The only way I could get it to install was by doing a Diagnostic Startup or Safe boot, then running the setup with everything closed. You can find this option in System Configuration.
3. In Duo Manager, select the option to Auto Start (assuming you want this) then click the green '+' button to add a new profile.
4. Give the new profile a name and press enter. Then fill out the other fields. There's no save button so you may have to click around to get things to save.
5. Click the green 'Play' button to start the Duo service.
6. Click the 'Open Sunshine' button. Sunshine should open in your browser. Confirm the security exception if there is one.
7. Enter some details to create a local Sunshine account.
8. Once you access the Sunshine Home screen with 'Hello, Sunshine!' go back to Duo Manager.
9. In Duo Manager, click the stop button. Click the play button when it becomes available. You may need to also restart your PC...
10. Open Moonlight on one of your client devices.
11. Check for an option to Add Host Manually.
12. Enter the Moonlight URI found in Duo and be sure to include the port e.g 192.168.x.x:33146
Note: The scaling option is not working for me at 4K. Duo seems to also be preventing my system from going to sleep.

Thanks for the work on this. I have a couple of issues.
- Scaling won't work. Running at 3840x2160 on Windows 11 Enterprise with an RTX 2080 Super. I tried using scaling values of 175 and 200.
I also get some errors when I start streaming. Maybe these are normal at the moment?
Error 1:

Select A1 Output Device first !
Keep default settings (default buffer size).
Device configuration might be 32, 44.1, 48, 88.2 or 96kHz only

Error 2:
"Installation Warning...
Bad Audio Driver installation Detected!
Some audio stream could not work correct...
In case of unexplained audio problem, you may consider Checking Driver installation tool (see Menu) and follow recommendations if any...
See also the Help and Support link given in Menu."
I'm not sure what the "Help and Support link given in Menu" is or where to find it.
I tried entering a custom scaling value in Windows but it didn't work..
I had one quick play test and performance didn't seem as good as Sunshine standalone, but I need to test more when the first issues are gone. My main hope for this is for HDR support without the need for a dummy plug. Thanks!

I tried creating a new user by using net use /add to no avail. Any help would be appreciated!
EDIT: Solved it! You need to be running Windows 11 Pro rather than Home Edition as a portion of the Remote Desktop protocol is disabled in Home.

Thank you for the reply. I don’t think it’s an issue with iOS/iPadOS, it’s just the remapping app not recognizing the JoyCons in the instance Duo creates. I know I’ll figure out a workaround, and I’ll post an update when I do. Again, this app is really great, solves so many problems.

I'm sorry I can't help you much with iPad related things as I don't own any Apple products myself.
I'm entirely unfamiliar with what options Apple users have available on their ecosystem (or not), but I know that for Android there is a on-screen keyboard one can install by the name of "Hacker Keyboard".
Unlike regular on-screen keyboards like GBoard this one features a full-fledged 100+ key layout including ALT+TAB, Windows key, etc. which makes quitting stuff quite easy.

First, just want to say that this is a great app, works very well so far. One issue I’m encountering is that while streaming to an iPad using JoyCons I can play games fine, input works as expected. But, I’m unable to use any mapping software to set custom keys or shortcuts as the JoyCons aren’t recognized in the mapping app, so I’m unable to exit most emulated games. Any help would be awesome, this is already 99% perfect for my use case.

Not sure what your setup is but I'm running multiple sessions just fine, one of them being 4K@60Hz.

If you don't need full on segregation of machines then Duo is the way better solution here btw.
The reduced overhead really shows.

Funny you mention that. My wife and I play two instances of BG3 on a similar setup just fine (because the built-in split screen mode is bugged).
To be more specific: 1x BG3 at 4K@60Hz and 1x BG3 at 800p@60Hz (Steam Deck), both instances at max settings.

I hate that this is pay-walled as it's such a great project but I tried it anyway. Compared to running a single instance of Moonlight, the performance was abysmal. Not sure if that's something that will change in the future but it was unusable even with just one session.

How’s the performance like running two instances of pretty demanding games like BG3 for example? I have a 4090 and 5900x but run Arch as my daily driver and it works for most games much fine. I’ll try this on my windows install eventually :P

Well, behind the scenes its being ported to countless additional devices while I focus down two specific devices (RG405M being one of them) to iron out the last remaining bugs.

GarlicOS 2.0 is in the works, let's take things one step at a time and try not to mix up the comment sections up.
