Anbernic RG552 AOSP 9.0 Beta #14 (HW decoder fixes & navigation shortcut toggle)

Turns out that some applications don't set the proper color profile when initializing the hardware decoder (Parsec & XBOX game pass are two offenders).

This causes freezes, or in the case of Parsec, crashes.

The OMX libraries have been updated to deal with this and now properly set the YUV420Planar color profile.

The previously removed navigation shortcuts are now also back, nicely hidden away behind a new quick-tile, allowing every user to make their own choice of whether they want to make use of them or not.

How to install: Unpack the attached files using 7zip and follow the included instructions found inside README.txt.

Things to note when updating from a previous build: If you previously had Google Apps installed, please make sure you re-install them after the update to avoid crashes!

For those needing the Google Play Store: Reboot into TWRP and install the latest OpenGapps ARM64 9.0 Pico bundle! (I suggest you finish the first-time setup with WiFi disabled... things move so much faster if you do!)

For those needing root: Magisk is included out of box and only needs to be activated on first boot. A WiFi connection is required for the initial Magisk activation.

Nice work on the OS, but i was having some trouble trying to root this thing. How exactly do i activate Magisk? On my phone i did something similar where i patched the bootloader rom thingie, but im not sure what to do here. It's not something super important but i figured if it was possible, why not.

Amazing ! Keep up the good work dude

When I'm done stabilizing / tweaking Android 9 to the point where I'm happy with it. Believe it or not... But the performance gains I've squeezed out aren't the end of it yet. The next update will give us a significant GPU boost and a variety of quality of life enhancements.

Black-Seraph

Hi black seraph when will we see android 10 ?

Kk

The comment right above yours mentions a few things I'm working on. The full changelog will have to wait for now though. :)

Black-Seraph: what is gona be in next build :)

Michael Snipes

An even better one should be ready within a day or two. Real life issues came up last Monday (and kept me busy all the way until today) which forced me to pause my work here temporarily... If it wasn't for that the new build would have been out last Tuesday already. Even better battery sleep times, WiFi & BT shutdown handlers for fast sleep mode (prevents the WiFi chip from locking up), a higher minimum default clock to improve scrolling fluidity, screen recording support, etc. are just some of the upgrades waiting in queue. :)

Black-Seraph

You have definitely fixed the battery issue! Thank you for your hard work! This is an excellent build!

Turns off the L+R with the letter buttons, its a combo when the navbar wasnt used

Michael Snipes

I just ordered a replacement, I'll be soldering this one directly to the board to make sure this never happens again :D

Simon W. Jackson

This may have been explained already, but what happens when we toggle "Software" in the navigation menu?

Simon W. Jackson

Got ya, mine just has lighting bolt and i marked mine so i wont do that

Michael Snipes

I'm having the same issue. You can permanently set the navigation bar to "Dark" if you press and hold on the home screen wallpaper, press "Home Settings", and change "Theme" to "Dark" If we ever get Android 10 on this device dark mode should be supported system wide at the OS level. 🤞

Simon W. Jackson

Ahh, it's the DC port. Sometimes its referred to as USB PD (power delivery)

Simon W. Jackson

Whats the PD port

Michael Snipes

PSA: don't plug the wifi USB into the PD port. I did this and the device no longer recognizes 5gz wifi and the green led does not light up. Surprisingly, BT still works though.

Simon W. Jackson

Black-Seraph: is their anyway to make navbar background permanately black with white buttons, I've noticed when going to some apps it turns completely white, which is very hard to see also when I go to settings and enable dark mode it doesn't work

Michael Snipes

Just a little bit in standby. Beyond that probably not. My latest test build managed to get the idle burn down to 1.5% per hour.

Black-Seraph

hello friend, first congratulate you again and thank you for this great job, would it be possible to optimize the battery a bit more? Thank you
