Anbernic RG552 AOSP 9.0 Beta #11 (more fixes)

This updates fixes a variety of reported issues.

Please take a look at the changelog below for a full list of changes!

How to install: Unpack the attached files using 7zip and follow the included instructions found inside README.txt.

Things to note when updating from a previous build: If you previously had Google Apps installed, please make sure you re-install them after the update to avoid crashes!

For those needing the Google Play Store: Reboot into TWRP and install the latest OpenGapps ARM64 9.0 Pico bundle! (I suggest you finish the first-time setup with WiFi disabled... things move so much faster if you do!)

For those needing root: Magisk is included out of box and only needs to be activated on first boot. A WiFi connection is required for the initial Magisk activation.

Black-Seraph: is there a way to bring a settings menu for the nav bar, to at least customize it?

Michael Snipes

Just wanted to say I’ve been downloading every build and it’s amazing man ! The battery life on this most recent one is excellent. Thank you again..the build is perfect 👍🏻

Robert Soliz

Some apps don't like the navbar. :( I'll see if I can figure something out.

Black-Seraph

ok there is no problem in the end when installing magisk it was restarted and everything works ok. The only thing that gamepass does not fill the entire screen is a good piece of black screen and I do not know how to solve it

We pretty much squeezed out as much as we can (performance wise) from this device. If the 2.2+1.8GHz OC profile (running on the Auto or High fan preset) isn't enough to play what you're trying to play then there isn't much else I can do.

Black-Seraph

Your network might be running on an unsupported channel. Also what dongle are we talking about? Can you execute the lsusb command in Termux and send a screenshot of that (while the dongle is plugged in)?

Black-Seraph

hello, install the android and when you put the usb wifi, the bluetooth does not work but the 5g networks detect those of the neighbors but mine does not. what can it be? Thank you

hello friend, I have installed your android and the truth is that a great improvement has been noticed, thanks for the work. there are still emulators like the one from dremcast that some games have fps drops... is there still some room for performance improvement or the machine can't give more of itself? thanks and greetings

Black-Seraph: how do you customize the nav buttons, i managed to move them horizontally, but wana add custom icons, the setting isnt their

Michael Snipes

Does anyone know how i can costomize my nav buttons, i dont see the settings in the setting options

Michael Snipes

It worked for me the first time. The android logo stays for a few seconds and then loads the system.

Alber

Just did the update and all its doing is showing andriod logo it seems hung

Michael Snipes

Updated by TWRP and reinstalled gapps. No problems and working perfectly.

Alber

Unpack them on the internal storage. You reboot into TWRP like I've told you before and pick the ZIP from the install menu.

Black-Seraph

How do i initiate the upgrade from device itself, i do have magjisk

Michael Snipes

Ok so i can unzip twrp files anywhere even sd card? And how would i install gapps

Michael Snipes

TWRP.

Black-Seraph

The same way you did before.

Black-Seraph

Do i use the maskrom files or the twrp files and how would i install them from device itself, my pc isnt doing right

Michael Snipes

Yes.

Black-Seraph

How do you install gapps again

Michael Snipes

So i can just use my device to download em and upgrade from device itself

Michael Snipes

You can fetch them directly from your RG552.

Black-Seraph

Black-Seraph: would i be able to download twrp files and gapps files directly onto the rg552 itself or would i need a pc?

Michael Snipes

The navigation combo toggles only trigger if L1+R1 are pressed together at the same time.

Black-Seraph

How do you toggle/change how the buttons behave in Android? I cannot map controls since "A" opens up recent apps...

Raphial Hebert

Technically they aren't issues but features... Android just works that way. I'm not 100% sure what to do about these as any changes that go against Android default behavior are usually very difficult to maintain (as they tend to break Android features).

Black-Seraph

Android wakes up periodically to check Google's cloud messaging service (if Google apps are installed) to deliver pending notifications.

Black-Seraph

See my previous answer.

Black-Seraph

That's normal for Android and has to do with it's wakelock system. If the system has pending operations to finish (network activity, location assessment, suspend blocking operations, etc) it will wait for those to finish before suspending.

Black-Seraph

Even with these issues, I am noticing a significant improvement in battery life over the previous beta versions.

Jason Andreas

I think issues like this may be the cause of the battery drain while in suspend mode.

Jason Andreas

In addition, I see the green light come on by itself at times. Sometimes the screen turns on by itself as well.

Jason Andreas

to actually suspend. For example, if I press the power button in Retroarch, the screen turns off but does not really suspend.

Jason Andreas

I’m definitely seeing an issue with the suspend button. Even if the screen goes off, sometimes the green led does not turn off. When this happens, you can press any of the L buttons and the system will wake up. Also, I have found that you need to swipe the menu and press the home option to get it

Jason Andreas

This is a guide that I used. It is excellent! It uses the mask rom method so make sure to backup any data as it will wipe your device! https://youtu.be/asTWi9eM_XM

Jason Andreas

Hi! I’ve just joined and looking forward to upgrading from 8 to 9.. but unfortunately the readme link you have is broken and won’t open?

Hello again, is there some way if connected with hdmi out that the screen from the rg552 shutdown ??

Jean-Wallace Bar

Yes.

Black-Seraph

Will all my apps still be there and data?

Michael Snipes

Yes. Any folder will do, but the root folder will be fine. Yes. Yes, the old Gapps will be replaced by the new ones.

Black-Seraph

I dont put the twrp files on sd card just device correct, what folder do i place it in and will it unzip both split files into one zip correct? And once i install the gapps zips will the old gapps be written over, i downloaded all 4 TWRPs files.

Michael Snipes

Unpack the split TWRP files and you will get a ZIP file out of it. Put that ZIP file on your device and then turn it off. Make sure no cables are plugged in. Now hold down the F button while turning it on, you will end up in the TWRP menu where you can install the TWRP ZIP file. Make sure you reinstall the OpenGapps ZIP as well.

Black-Seraph

You should. Otherwise your device will be stranded without WiFi. The older builds don't have the necessary drivers to run the new WiFi chip.

Black-Seraph

Black-Seraph: if i choose to upgrade from andriod 8 to latest 9 you have which i will :) i will be using twrp, dont really wana have to redownload all apps and stuff again, will i still get all the overclocking benefits using twrp upgrade and do i need to reinstall gapps or no, if so how do i boot using twrp and where on the device do i install the twrp files and will i recieve all the stuff you added into the latest 9 upgrade?

Michael Snipes

Hey dumb question: when i do the mod for the BT/WIFI Chip, do i need to upgrade my andriod before the mod, im still running andriod 8, havent had time yet to run upgrade. But have been keeping up with the updates and downloading as they become avail along with the gapps files

Michael Snipes

I'm glad you noticed.

Black-Seraph

AetherSX2's Vulkan mode requires a graphic card with Vulkan 1.1 support. The Mali T860 inside the RG552 only has Vulkan 1.0 though. Please stick to OpenGLES in AetherSX2!

Black-Seraph

Aethersx crash with vulkan (tryed only ffx)

Jean-Wallace Bar

Thank you

Preston Wood

I am noticing much better battery life on standby since you started down clocking the cpu on standby! Thank you!

Jason Andreas

If it's your first time to my firmwares then download all MaskROM parts. If you are coming from a previous firmware of mine then download the TWRP files and install them straight from your device by booting into the TWRP recovery. In both cases you need to download all parts of whichever package you're going for into the same folder and extract the part that ends with 001. It will automatically unpack all the other parts too.

Black-Seraph

Hi. Do I download all 7 packs or just the lastest on Maskrom and TWRP?

Preston Wood

That's odd. Maybe we need a toggle for the navigation bar so those troublesome apps no longer pose a problem.

Black-Seraph

Noticed that Xbox Game Pass streaming was not running in Full screen after the side menu buttons was added.

Marcelo Minholi

Redream, PPSSPP, mGBA, Parallei / MupenPlus

Black-Seraph

May I ask what emulators you guys are using for Dreamcast, PSP, GBA and N64 please ? Many thanks !

Fabrice Usieto

I'll try and provide. But first some sleep. I've been up for way too long already.

Black-Seraph

Not every device can handle the maximum overclock level. This is why I made it a toggle: So everyone can figure out where their own unit's limit is. The lucky few (myself included) can drive it all the way up to 2.2/1.8... others might have to settle for 2.1/1.7...

Black-Seraph

Fans spinning and black screen is where you want to be. That's the right mode. After that install the drivers and then execute the install.bat file (or install.sh for Linux).

Black-Seraph

If I can request two small things. 1. A dark mode Android theme. 2. That neat Apple background that you used in your first Android 9 post.

Jason Andreas

I’m really impressed with this update! I’m running AetherSX2 and Playing Phantasy Star Generation 1 at the full overlocking speed and full fan. It is running Fantastic!

Jason Andreas

Hello, I tried your update for the very first time... First try, I saw a menu on the RG552 screen with a list of options, but my computer didn't detect the RG552 (I previously installed the driver by running DriverInstall.exe in the Driver forlder). I tried this 2 more times with the same result, but from now on, when I try, I hear the RG552 fans running but still no detection from my PC and now the RG552 screen stays black... Any idea about what I did wrong please ? Thanks a lot !

Fabrice Usieto

I updated it from previous build (which worked great) with TWRP but I have issues with system rebooting on its own. It happened three times in 30 minutes while playing Brutal Doom 64 with max overclockig and max fan.

No, they only apply to the Android side. For Batocera you should probably get in touch with one of their maintainers. If you want a "Linux-side" distro that plays well with this "Android-side", you should look into JeLOS, as Fewtarius (fewt) tries to stay somewhat in sync with my releases.

Black-Seraph

I have a probably stupid question, here it is anyway... Do the overclocking features apply to the Linux based Batocera please ?
