Thanks for the video! Mathematician here - 100% agree with your take on math. It annoys us just as much when it's called a science, even though we use practically no methods from science.

Connor Meredith

Joined your patreon to say thank you for this video and the one about conspiracy physics. I'm not sure how any confuses your content for that trash. Your admiration for your colleagues and the achievements of your predecessors is obvious and delightful.

One of my first jobs out of high school was working for 8 years at veterinary clinic... sorry... ANIMAL WELLNESS CENTER... that was owned by an actual legit veterinarian who was also a chiropractor, and I saw some real whackadoodle medicine being practiced there. He was deep into acupuncture, essential oils, magnets, homeopathy (neck-deep in pyramid schemes for some of these). I remember one time he came back to where I was cleaning animal cages with a couple bottles of medicine and a frigging CRYSTAL and I wish I could remember the exact procedure but like... one of us held the medicine bottle, and the other held the crystal, and then asked me to push down on his hand. And I think the idea was that whichever medicine bottle made it harder to push his hand down was the correct medicine. And yeah, he was doing spinal adjustments on dogs/cats/horses, and acupuncture, and waving magnets over them. But then the next day he'd be doing surgery to remove a tumor from a dog. And we'd use normal gas anesthesia, and gave antibiotics post-surgery, and we autoclaved the surgical tools (as opposed to just blessing them or something). Luckily I was mostly left alone to do data entry and clean animal cages, that thing with the crystal was the only time I personally was cornered into actively participating in quackery. I think he liked me for some reason because while I'd hold a crystal for him and push on his hand I know I did nothing to hide the incredulity on my face. Meanwhile I once heard him threaten to fire another girl for not fully believing in his energy healing stuff. Actually I think I just unlocked a memory that he left his wife and baby to date a young stripper, so... that was actually probably just misogyny.

My personal requirements are testable and repeatable -- if they apply, its science. This includes a lot of things that traditional "hard" science people don't want to admit are scientific. A lot of this is also the D-K effect too -- the less you know about a thing, the more confident you feel talking about it, unfortunately.

THIS IS THE DIARY POLICE! OPEN UP!!!

I am also from an abusive family. I am familiar with the "abusive family structure" you described. I disagree with you that this is not science. Rather I think it is science adjacent. When Darwin or other biologists go out into the field, collect data, organize it, analyze it, and then theorize about it, that's science. Someone observed many adults coming from abusive families, collected data, organized it, and analyzed it. This is not as rigorous as evolutionary biology, but calling it "not science" is a bit harsh.

I hold the same opinion as you that math is not a science because it is not a study of the physical world. BUT Lakatos wrote a book "Proofs and Refutations" to show that in some instances mathematical theorems are subject to experiments and to the "scientific method." There is a theorem with an absolute proof. Oops, someone comes up with a counterexample. The theorem is adjusted. Lather; rinse; repeat. It's a delightful read, and I recommend it to everyone reading this comment.

Maybe I'm wrong but I've been paying attention and predict that RFK Jr may be onto something. It's clear that the Pharma Bros have captured a lot of people's minds who have big jobs and degrees in the medical industry. He has correctly identified a problem We have an autism epidemic.

I've stopped talking to people about... well, all of this stuff, but mostly chiropractors. They don't want to listen, get defensive, "but it makes me feel better." I feel on some level I'm failing them, but I've never been able to achieve a good outcome.

I'm an old CFD type guy, I want to know how Euler did it.

Agreed about chiropractors but actual factual medical doctors will 10000% let you suffer from headaches (or whatever) for years and whenever you ask about it say "it's because you're overweight" or "some people just have bad periods" or "you're just at that age" or will just order some blood tests and note in your chart "low pain tolerance/psychosomatic condition/seeking attention"

My robotics coach said the same thing you did about Meyers-Briggs, that it was best understood as a pointer toward what you need to work on. I'm glad you can get different results week by week because she said that was the goal.

Here is an example of pseudoscience that got published in a predatory “pay to play” journal. The statements about scientist as gatekeepers” and how people in Africa are too stupid to understand science (he doesn’t sat it so clearly, but that’s clearly one of the many things he asserts with absolutely no references or evidence: https://www.academia.edu/7498628/An_Analysis_of_the_Language_Used_To_Communicate_Information_on_Climate_Change?email_work_card=title

I had the exact same response to that part on Game Changer. I love that show but that moment I had the almost the same thing where it makes me trust the show a little less.
