WCMBI - Chapter 272: Frustrations

Ian was slowly but steadily recovering. In the meantime, he had received a formal complaint from the Earl of Rosewood, meticulously collecting the whereabouts and identities of the Omegas.

"My lord."

"Yes?"

"It is not yet time for you to work."

"Well, can't I work sitting on the bed? It's not an excessive strain."

"The burns are one thing, but I'm most concerned about your leg. Even sitting and leaning on the bed can strain it."

"You may not know this, but I tend to recover relatively quickly."

"Why should I not know that? It's just that I am worried."

"Why is that?"

"A month has already passed. If it were me, you would have almost finished your recovery and been walking about soundly. But look at your leg now."

Ian still gazed absentmindedly at his twisted leg.

"Medical methods have their limits now. Why not tell me the reason for rejecting healing magic?"

Silent and turning his head away, Ian couldn't utter a word to the physician. Instead, he considered it a blessing that there were aftereffects; how could he speak otherwise?

He wanted to suffer more than Melissa, who lost her pheromone gland and sense of smell, yet it seemed he was dissatisfied as it wasn't the case.

Ever since Melissa left like that, Ian was more concerned about her not coming back. Thus, his own condition didn't even come into his notice.

"Has Mel not returned since then?"

"My lord."

"She hasn't come to Dia either? Are you sure?"

"From what I've heard, that's the case."

"Hmm...."

He placed the documents he was holding on the writing desk and laid down.

"Leave."

"My lord."

"I said, leave!"

"Very well. Rest, then."

Ian felt uneasy. Melissa, to whom he had given a chance, seemed to have been angry upon seeing his condition.

"Did I misjudge? Isn't this what she wanted?"

He thought that if he were in as much pain as she was, she would naturally be pleased. He believed that was the path to understanding each other.

"If not this way, then how should I proceed?"

The sense of frustration enveloped him. He tried to ignore his anxiety, but he was too afraid that she wouldn't return. He still hadn't found a way to reach Matap, and if she didn't come back, what would he do?

He couldn't discern right from wrong anymore. Ian curled up under the blankets. It was cold. He shivered so much that he couldn't bear the intense chill that swept through his entire body.
