I really appreciate that Bee. It was a personal passion project and I appreciate you helped to make it happen. I'm thinking of maybe trying ADHD myths or something of the sort in the future based on what Patrons would like. But it felt like I was able to offer a little support back to the community on this one and would like to do it again eventually

This was a truly beautiful video. I love the passion you have for our rights, and how well-researched it was. Though I was diagnosed early on, there are days I find it difficult to handle life as an autistic adult. But things like this are like a hug to the soul. It’s a blessing that the next generations will have a video like this to ease and empower them.

And SpongeBob is awesome

ADHD isn't part of the Autism spectrum but it certainly has some similar traits doesn't it 😀

Josh Strider

Because he's on the spectrum :)

Josh Strider

For the longest time, still even now, I’ve been put under the ADHD umbrella (having ADD). Unfortunately, misdiagnosed autism can be a pain when it’s been diagnosed with or as something else seen as ‘less vital’ as I’d put it.

Mara

It’s always fine to find videos who have genuine respect and research behind the subject matter. I recall growing up I never really had any to no information in regards to autism as a whole so it never occurred to me that I might of been on the spectrum. Meanwhile, I was finally diagnosed at 16 (now 20) and I’m honestly still salty with how long it took for me to be properly diagnosed. So I always share information about any subject I’m asked and if I’m not sure I always recognize that everyone somethings just need to do their own research. Thank you again for your work, Mr. Strider!

Why is spongebob there?

Landen_or_not

Is ADHD part of the spectrum? Some of these mannerisms and behaviors sound just like me, minus the audio sensitivity part. All that that does is keep me from focusing properly. I'm honestly so tired of all the anti-vax sentiment going around. The only ones I don't get (mostly just the flu vaccine) are ones I have had adverse reactions to. But that is just me, not the world.

Ask anyone in my life and they'd tell you I'm aggressive

Monique Star

I have sensory processing disorder in addition to autism. I have to put noise cancelling earbuds in when a train passes by

I'm really sorry you went through that Melinda. That's absolutely messed up mis-information that you'd hear that. Back when I was growing up Internet forums could be pretty useless for me discovering more about myself too. Thanks likewise though for helping me make this video for the autistic community :)

Josh Strider

That's very true. Tony mentioned "only children are on the spectrum" as a myth he frequently hears. Hopefully from their statements "autism is a condition that lasts as long as you do" people hopefully pick that up. But absolutely is a thing I"ve heard too :)

Josh Strider

I also remember when I first learned I had autism (around 2009/10, I was 12/13) I went on to YouTube looking for other people who had autism and I kept running into videos from older teens (about 16/17/18) talking about how they had been autistic as a young child but eventually "grew out of it" and are "normal now." I don't know what part of the internet they crawled out of and I know I would never in a million years be able to find those videos again, but it did kind of mess me up at the time. I just thought, "okay, I just have to wait and eventually the autism will go away and I'll be able to have friends." That's not how it worked at all. Just goes to show what publishing misinformation does. I'm glad that today we have a number of creators who are openly autistic and can provide answers and emotional solace for people - especially young people - who are just learning about their diagnosis or are trying to learn about how to support a friend or family member who has autism. I would've killed for that fifteen years ago. Thank you for making this video, Strider! I hope it helps someone out there who was in the same position I was!

Here's a myth that I feel like should have been on here, "only children have autism." Some people - particularly people who should know better like special educators - believe this. As if there's a magic switch in our brains that will turn our autism off the second we turn eighteen or have a diploma in our hands and we'll have no problems integrating with society from thereon out. It's very frustrating. The number of times people have said to me "oh, you mean you had it when you were a kid" when I've told them I have Autism is unbelievable.

Melinda Williams

That's fair. Though I personally have known alot of Autistic people over the years and not personally met many people similar to Sheldon. Though I have met a few Abed's 😄

Josh Strider

Thank you Strider for this video those myths are absolute bull thank goodness they’re being debunked

Garfield_NotNermal

Great video, Josh. All of these myths are utter bologna and I'm glad they're being debunked.

I enjoyed this video a lot. I have certainly have seen these myths come up a lot. The super skilled, no empathy, and violent/aggressive myths I have known since middle school and high school. I know you mentioned Sheldon Cooper (for lack of empathy) but Christopher from Curious Incident is another that have spread these myths. The character is a math savant who had no empathy and came off as violent (there were two moments in the book where he threatened two people with a Swiss Army Knife). The author admitted six years after the book was first published that he did no research on autism, but by that point the damage has been done. The book (and play) was very popular in the U.K., and when I used to go to middle and high school in the U.K. (or simply secondary school as it's known there), I got constantly compared to Christopher just because I'm autistic (especially that one support teacher who was a super fan of the book) and not a single person listened or took any of my concerns about this book seriously (and that was before I found out about the blog post where the author mentioned doing no research on autism when writing the book).

Jyu Raposa

Eh personally I like Sheldon and I don't think he's a "Damaging representation" at all as I actually did know other autistic people that were like him in the special needs school I went to for my high school years. I'm with Spectrum Pulse in that Big Bang Theory is a lot more accurate then people realize, especially if you work in science fields.

One of my former employers actually thought Autism could be "cured", needless to say I wasn't at that job for long. I'll admit i'm not interested in a relationship myself but not because i'm like asexual(not that there's anything wrong with that)but rather because I simply prefer being by myself and I don't really want to spend time doing things I don't like that someone else likes and i'm not interested in having kids as I'm still learning how to take care of myself and there's no way i'm capable of looking after another human being.

This video is going to be awesome! ❤️
