Creality CR-6 SE questions please

Dear Patrons,

The CR-6 SE from Creality arrived. Are there any questions about it you would like answered in the video?

Michael

Creality CR-6 SE questions please

Comments

In terms of ease of setup, it was probably even better. It's the first printer I've tested that comes close. Still lacking a bit of polish on the docs and help because the English translation isn't as good as Prusa.

Teaching Tech

How do you think the CR6 compares to a Prusa Mk3?

Brian Harkin

I loved the review video you posted! I backed the Kickstarter campaign and have one expected to arrive sometime in July-ish. I hope, fingers crossed.

Christopher J Reed

Thanks everyone for the questions, it really steered the direction of the video. I think I pretty much covered them all.

Teaching Tech

Is the extruder any better than the Ender 3?

Gary Pray

Is the screen a serial device ala MKS/ BTT or is it of the ribbon cable / closed firmware variety?

Phil Maddox

Hi Luke, Thanks for the reply . I'm probably more cynical than most and i feel there's a lot of trend followers demanding 32 bit without understanding the consequences . 32bit has been around for a few years ( my duet wifi is about to hit its 4 year bday) and its only since its become more affordable ( FYSTEC, LERDGE & BTT) that a lot of people want it. I think its more important to know if the firmware is "open" and can be tweaked / updated. Inevitably a 32 bit board will be at least+/- USD20 more expensive than 8 bit and i think that would be better spent on QC & customer support to give all users a better " out of the box" experience.

Phil Maddox

Hi Rod, that sounds like a nice idea for a video. I can give a rundown of how every printer I've reviewed has gone since then.

Teaching Tech

I would like to see the assembly of the bed level sensor. how easy is it to replace, or if printed fan coolers are possible with the setup.

Adam Green

Phil, I do not have anything against the 8-bit boards per se, but it was more that Creality was using the smaller, less powerful 8-bit chip. I notice that they are shipping beta units with the ATMega2586 which is a move in the right direction that will allow users to enable more Marlin features. We may still run into issues with upgrades if you want to tinker.

Luke Ingerman

Michael, I suspect the other commentators will have covered the questions I have about how this printer performs out of the box. However, as I look at this sexy (for Creality) new machine, my thoughts turn to the fact that, while people like yourself have focused (rightly) on how to get the most out of these machines, I haven't really seen anyone tackle the "extended test drive" area. Consumer Reports and Car & Driver, for example, have been doing this for years with autos and trucks. I think for the market that this is designed to go after (the less-hands on hobbyist), and even for the more deep-level 3D printing techies out there, it would be great to know how these machines hold up after "30,000 miles" (or the 3D equivalent) in stock or virtually stock condition. As someone who has machines that you've lived with for a year or more, I think that would be a great mini-series to add to your collection of offerings to the community. As an easy example, you could put this machine into some context by showing how other Creality models have held up over time.

Rod Bosco

I would like to know if it will support octoprint as WiFi is not available on the printer direct. Additionally as 32bit will be an option what is better 8bit or 32bit.

Interested to know why you think 8 bit is an Achilles heel ?

Phil Maddox

Id like more details on the strain gauge and the inevitable interface electronics to an "endstop" I cant see this being accurate and i guess limits bed surface to hard/glass surfaces. IMHO this is similar to sensor less homing and greatly overrated and fundamentally floored. From what I've seen the extruder looks like a weird design . Nice to see companies trying to innovate but looks susceptible to issues. Hotend looks interesting and again nice to see some innovation there too and asthetic design too. I dont think the 8 bit board is an issue on this Cartesian machine . I think most people moaning about that dont really understand why they would want it anyway. Of course the biggest concern is the quality control on the production units ????? Cheers PS Of course there's the whole abuse of Kickstarter being used as pre-sales .2500 early bird units just proves that. Gorilla marketing at its best.

Phil Maddox

I understand the board is still an 8bit board? I hope it can be upgradable! And I wonder if the parts cooling fan can be upgraded to HeroMe or something like that?

James K Shafer

Would like to know more about its ABL setup and how it works. Would be curious if it more or less accurate than a bltouch or EZABL. Would also like to know more about the board its running.

Rob Ward

This is Creality's newest. Have they provided a mature product not beta? Bottom line does it print better and more consistently than existing models? If we want to mod, we can still buy Ender 3.

Charles Beshaw

From the videos by CHEP, 3D Printing Nerd, and Naomi Wu the CR-6 SE seems to have some 'mods' built into the base model. These include the side mounted spool holder (that swivels for travel), the X and Y belt tensioners, TFT screen, etc. while maintaining the 8-bit board which is an Achilles heel. The change in hotted design and the inclusion of FSR ABL are the major points I would like to see more focus on. What happens if the FSR fails for whatever reason? How easy is it to switch to another method if the FSR fails or are we stuck waiting for factory replacements. Same question on the hotend body. While the heater block and nozzle seem to be standard, the cool zone appears to be a new design that could make upgrades a pain.

Luke Ingerman

The Ender 3 is highly customizable- how much scope is there for the CR-6 SE to be modded and upgraded over time? Doe sit use standard or custom components?

Erik Jensen

How safe is it?

Fred Novy

Are the nozzles proprietary? What type of thermistor and heater cartridge does it use? Is it ribbon cable or something more durable? Touch screen or lcd?

Jess

How is the ringing, what speeds can you print at and still get good results, does it print PET-G successfully.

Peter Richards

Does anything seem to be "Proprietary" where Creality would be the only supplier of that part, code, etc. One thing I'm concerned about is the hot end. Doe the integrated bed leveling mean that the hot end is only available from Creality?

Tim

The 3DP community is by its nature, a modding community. How friendly will this be to mod? Will it be necessary?

Will-in-IN

I would like to know what features you personally think are "game changers" (if any) versus what things are nice tweaks to existing tech. ALSO, they make a big deal about the handle. Is this something you can envision being taken places? ALSO, What happens to quality as print speed goes up. LASTLY, Do you think based on what you see, that upgrading to an all-metal hotend will be possible, while retaining the self leveling feature, since there is no other way to level the machine.

Will-in-IN

I'd like more info on the strain guage(load cell) leveling

Jynxx13

I'd like some more details about the 'modular' hotend. What is it about it that makes it modular?

Robert Gusek

1. Is it still open-source Marlin? 2. Does the aftermarket titan direct drive hotend come with/need a new shroud for cooling etc - and does it come with a all metal hotend?

Ky Lane

It uses a pressure sensor on the hotend to know when its touching the bed - its very very sensitive and super accurate actually.

Ky Lane

I’m am very curious to hear your take on this printer after watch CHEP’s video. This printer still confuses me. No all metal hotend, no direct drive. It seems they added abl, filament runout and a wider y rail, then almost doubled the price from and e3. I’m kind of curious as to what factors decide between the Ender or CR series. Good luck with the video. I look forward to watching it

branden price

How easy is it to replace the extruder assembly? I have watched three unboxings and with each have become more and more suspect of the new extruder being anything but annoying.

Matthew Fochs

How does the bed levelling system work?
