you were confused about Hanji being referred to as "sir", so here's a fun fact: in the original manga, Hanji's gender is ambiguous on purpose, and Isayama (AoT's creator) has instructed translators to use neutral language or alternate between "he" and "she". i think that's really cool, and it's the reason most people just interpret the character to be non-binary
