Dark - Ep.3X5 "Life and Death" UNCUT & UNCENSORED

Ok, quite a heavy episode ahead of us here....

Please, be patient with the mistakes I do make in this episode. I do get a year wrong, and I get a name or two mixed up (again) BUT I eventually catch myself! That being said, man, what a rollercoaster this episode was...

Also, PLEASE tell me if I'm going crazy, as you'll see me over-analyze the editing in this episode and lose my mind in the process.

Feel free to help me out and answer any/all questions I throw your way (without spoiling the story of course lol)

This was frustrating watching you get completely hung up over the fact that they didn’t give you the transition you were expecting in between universe switches. As other commenters have already said, this was not the first time they transitioned between universes without making that transition effect. It was just the first time you noticed and decided to stop your entire reaction to get confused about. They truly and honestly did give you other clues to figure it out, but you were stuck like it was a law of the world that they had to make that transition effect for you.

Love the pure confusion in this episode. Highlight of my day! "Dunno if you can tell but there's a lot going on here" *jiggles the family tree screen* Full frustrated half rant about the cuts which are starting to become more disjointed the closer to the end we get. "I am confusion". Please don't change your style, as the others have said, we're here for exactly that! I find this episode so sad for Katharina because she's had a complete shit show of a time as a young woman, thought she had a loyal husband and happy family, but is then dragged into this mess and ended with one of the hardest hits for nothing. Slightly the same for Peter and Ulrich. Peter, poor guy just wants Benjamin/Bernadette but never gets his chance without strife. And Ulrich, while having made some pretty poor decisions, just wants his kids safe and pays a high price for it which he'd never receive resolution.

I love that they just decided to cast his son. He looks so much like him, the second I saw him I was like YUP THAT'S PETER. Insane casting. Also, young Charlotte looks so much like adult Charlotte. Crazy!

The actor who plays young Peter is the actual son of the actor who plays Peter

Andrea

Remember when the kids were teasing about the legend of there being a dead lady in the lake? Yeah so it was actually their mom's corpse the whole time. Crazy stuff lol

Echoing other posters, I really enjoy your reactions and analysis, although I kind of wish this was a live stream so we could drop insights when you're getting yourself in a knot. Although I do agree with Fred's comments, please don't change your style too much - after all, that's why we're all here! With reference to your question about HG Tannhaus's name, it's a sneaky reference to HG Wells, who wrote The Time Machine in 1895. Edit: please don't worry about the ending; they absolutely nail it. Episodes 7 and 8 are probably the best 2 hours of telly I've ever watched.

When Helene is getting the abortion, she says: "My mother says they go to hell, the ones you get rid of." When Helene is killing Katharina, she says: "You come from hell. The devil sent you. You're not real. I got rid of you." Helene thinks adult Katharina is the child she aborted, come back to life as a demon. Katharina called her "Mom", the age roughly lines up, and she saw the resemblance. Quite plausible in comparison to something as ludicrous as time travel. When Helene beats her daughter, she's not just venting her frustration/trauma. From Helene's point of view, she's also disciplining her daughter, teaching her a valuable lesson: Abstinence, because you can be impregnated no matter how little you want to be (as Helene was, as a girl), and the consequences are terrible - even if you get an abortion, your aborted child will rise from the dead decades later, as a demon, ready to kill you.

Yes, it was clear from showing the destroyed police station in which world we are, since the apocalypse in evas world only leaves a desert, the station wasn't mirrored and it was "world-1-weather". The transition is just the most prominent clue, but there are so many context clues: establishing shots, mirroring, the weather, clothing, hairstyles, the music, etc. I feel like while in the end you get most of the plot, in the heat of the moment you're making it harder for yourself to understand the plot by trying to disect it in real time. I dont know where your screen is, but from watching your eye movements it sometimes looks like your only paying half attention, you often jump to conclusions in the middle of a szene (like the "her world doesnt deserve to be saved ... anymore than ours" moment this time) which leads to you sometimes missing the context clues, the subtle camera movements, the focus of each szene, the narrative context, music and object clues. This can sometimes be very frustrating to watch, but it helps to know that in the end, you'll get it. Dont get me wrong, i really dont mean this negatively, i just wish, you would sometimes worry less about these things, getting stuff wrong and instead of focusing on understanding every detail singularly would let a szene breathe a little more, take in all the context before analyzing. I might be wrong with these observations, and i don't mean it as a critique, i'm just writing this down, so you can tell me if i'm getting this wrong. I definitely cant wait to see your reaction to the rest of the series and despite these little frustrations i'm overall very much enjoying your reactions! Keep up the good work!

It's not a mistake. The transition effect implies that we've switched worlds, but not every world switch is accompanied by that effect. This wasn't the first time that a world switch happened without that transition effect. I think in this instance, they wanted the scene to start totally black. And the transition effect doesn't really work when transitioning to/from black.
