The White Lotus - Ep.1X6 "Departures" UNCUT & UNCENSORED

And with that, we've made it through our first stay at the White Lotus :D

Things didn't quite pan out how I thought (or frankly hoped) they would, but I really enjoyed this introduction to the show's overall format. Laughs were had, tears were (almost) shed, and debauchery was always just a room or two away!

Looking forward to continuing the series, as many have expressed their fondness for Season 2 in particular....

We have no idea what Rachel and Shane's dynamics were before the show starts, so we don't know what he tried to hide from her or how he behaved beforehand. We know that they got married very quickly and that Rachel was in a bad relationship just before meeting him. But he certainly treats her poorly. He's dismissive of her feelings, repeatedly ignores her when she's trying to speak to him and confide in him, flirts with very young girls right in front of her, acts in a physically belligerent manner by slamming the table, allows his mother to invade their honeymoon, and is generally completely uncaring of her emotions. If he was willing to listen to his wife and have a conversation, they could have both discussed their feelings about the working on the honeymoon situation and figured it out together-- but he refuses to have a single discussion where he actually listens and empathizes with her perspective. Would she even have considered taking the work if she was having a good time on their honeymoon, or was it already ruined by him ignoring her to obssess over getting the wrong room? Sure "some women" would die for a rich boyfriend who doesn't want them to work. There are people out there who would put up with anything, that doesn't make it acceptable behaviour. Nobody cares if you're technically right about your customer service gripes if you're a self-absorbed asshole who doesn't understand that the woman you married is a human being with thoughts and feelings and needs, not a pretty decoration. Don't get me wrong, I have gripes with Rachel too-- pretty everyone in this show sucks-- but Shane is completely insufferable.

Listen, the great thing about The White Lotus is that you’re supposed to have different perspectives on the characters and they’re all legitimate. But I need to defend Shane again (and glad to see other people defending him too!). Shane did nothing wrong to Rachel, he’s actually given her things that some women would die for. He’s just a kind of immature and self-obsessed guy. But that’s just who he is and he never tried to hide it from her. But what about Rachel? As far as he’s aware she’s very happy with him, then literally on the honeymoon that his family paid for she tells him she prefers to work than spend time with him *on their honeymoon!*, then tells him she’s going to divorce him and get a big pay out. It’s outrageous. She’s not a victim, she is an insecure, naive baby. That’s one of the reasons Belinda is so dismissive of her issues when she hears them: ‘Omg, should I stay with my husband for all of his money and the glamorous lifestyle or should I not?!’
