Bat, hammer, or wrench?
Added 2022-10-02 21:03:25 +0000 UTCCoda thinks about his title as he flies around in the tunnels, constantly checking and rechecking as progress on the scythemaw bypass continues. He probably spends more time considering his title than any of the other scions, with the possible exception of Honey. She doesn't count, though. She's always thinking about something, so titles must be in the rotation somewhere.
He even sometimes thinks about his thinking about his title, which is oddly more clear to him. He thinks about his title more than the others because he spent so long without one. He had worried he had somehow displeased Thedeim with his work... or lack thereof.
He didn't hate guiding the fruit bats in the early days, but there wasn't much to it, really. Nodes needed tending and the hedge needed growing, and the bats knew what to do. He even tried to guide their expeditions for a time, until Poe started slowly muscling his way into that job, too. Coda was happy to give it to him as well. The expeditions under the raven were immediately more fruitful than when the bat scion was in charge.
But now he has his title, and he understands why it took Foreman Thedeim so long to give him work: there was just none to be done for him. It wasn't until the tunnels were opened that building could be done! The work in designing, building, and guiding is more fulfilling than he could have imagined.
There's just one thing that doesn't feel right. His title: Architect. He feels like it's close, but not quite correct. The concept that does feel correct, though, is one he's only felt through the bond. Something about it resonates inside the bat scion whenever the Foreman thinks about it. It's something he calls himself, something he calls Queen, and something he sometimes calls even Coda.
Artificer is closer than architect, closer than craftsman certainly. There's some aspect of learning, or perhaps actual knowledge affinity involved in it. Yes... that resonates well within him. It's not the kind of knowledge that scholars might seek, for its own sake. Queen is right in that knowledge needs an application to have a point... literally needs a use to be useful.
Much of what he does is gathering knowledge and applying it, come to think of it. Measure, get numbers, make the numbers say what he needs them to, do it in reality. He still smiles at the memory of Teemo teaching him and Honey some of the math. He still doesn't understand how the Voice could look so bored while demonstrating something so interesting.
The Voice simply said he wants nothing to do with counting once letters get involved. Honey has been working through the details of a lot of concepts, and teaching Coda as she goes, but she's involved in so many other projects that it's slow going.
Which is fine by him. He has plenty he can do with the math he knows now. He's still looking forward to learning more. He can feel a new title and new affinities are waiting for more math. The Foreman has said that math is at the root of so many things. Coda knows that math will be the key to expanding a knowledge affinity into kinetic and more... like a new title.
Civil Artificer isn't quite what he can faintly hear echo through the bond, but it still has a nice ring to it.

Shoudent the town have somethink like Engines? Have Themon/Forman hire one as teacher. Just make sure that Coda can read.

2022-10-04 00:56:47 +0000 UTCShouldn't be too hard for him to get the engineer title. Engines are just objects that convert energy into mechanical force. Siege engines are all about releasing stored potential energy into a force that propels a projectile. Technically plenty of bridges are engines if they convert the potential energy of gravity into a force that maintains tension of the structure, that's the whole point of the keystone. Coda just needs to comprehend the kinetic aspect of how support structure of the mine redirects the weight put upon it.

2022-10-03 03:11:40 +0000 UTCThedeim's going to have to prompt someone to coin a new word to be the translation of Engineer so Coda can have his proper title, isn't he?
