The Batman (Full Reaction)

This was quite the serial killer murder mystery! I was expecting this film to be more like the traditional super hero films we've seen in the past, but this was completely different. It was a really fun movie, despite all of the horrific murders!

Watched on: HBO Max / Runtime: 2:56:10

My favorite Batman movie, one of my favorite films ever period

Just a general FYI to an obscure line in the film. While working on the Riddler's cypher, Alfred says he was remembering his time in "The Circus". That's a reference to the British intelligence service MI6(similar to the CIA in the US). Technically the term was coined in a series of novels about a fictional version of MI6, but it's entered into general usage just a bit(especially in fiction). The series of novels it comes from includes Tinker Tailer Soldier Spy, which was turned into a movie not super long ago. The US versions of the term would be "The Company" or "The Agency" referring to the CIA, and "Langley" or "The Farm" referring to the CIA headquarters building in Langley, Virginia(which was a farm before it was purchased and the HQ was built on the site).

Great reaction, as always. This is my 2nd favorite Batman movie; really close to the Dark Knight. I thought the riddler did fantastic.

The Penguin Series is a must. It begins exactly where this movie ended.

Im so happy you enjoyed it! Absolutely love this film. Gotta watch the penguin! It's a continuation of the batman gotham story it's an 8 episode mini series. There's also a great comic called riddler year one written by the actor that played him Paul Dano. It's a very interesting deep dive of the character.

Thanks for the engaging reaction and insightful commentary, as always Jax. Great to hear that you got some much-needed rain.

Great reaction! Just to clear one thing up, Mark Hamil played the Joker, not Batman. But I understand the confusion since mark hamil is also Luke SkyWalker so you were probably assuming he’d play another hero And yes, Colin Ferrel is the Penguin with a lot of prosthetic makeup on and of course a different accent. It was funny seeing your reaction at the end to that This movie was originally supposed to come out in 2020. But due to covid was delayed until 2022. And then due to the writer and actor’s strike, the sequel also got delayed to 2027 lol. It was supposed to be 2025, then 2026, now 2027. And while I haven’t seen it, The penguin tv show is set in this universe. Overseen by Matt Reeves Matt Reeves is a great director. I’m a big planet of the apes fan. And he directed two of the best ones. A common complaint is that Robert Pattinson doesn’t play a good Bruce Wayne. But in my opinion that’s on purpose and you summed it up perfectly at the end This is Batman’s second year of fighting crime. He hasn’t been able to strike a balance between Bruce and Batman. in the Christian Bale movies, he figured out pretty quickly to play up the playboy persona. But thjs version of Bruce is so dedicated to being Batman he doesn’t care But I’m sure in the sequel he’ll embrace his Bruce side. Since he learned a lot of lessons from this movie. That he can help the city as both Bruce and Batman, with his money. And knowing that the riddler was inspired by him is gonna change his outlook for sure. I believe this is planned as a trilogy and I think people need to be patient before they criticize Bruce. since from what I can tell it’s a very intentional choice. Also yes that was the joker. There’s a deleted scene where Batman goes to talk to the joker in Arkham Asylum to ask for advice with the riddler. We don’t know much else. But since it’s 2 years into we can assume that Batman has already locked up the joker, but he probably didn’t cause as much chaos as the riddler did. The movie seems to imply that the Riddler is his first major villain. But with the deleted scene, while the joker never flooded the city or uncovered secrets or his family, he probably caused enough chaos to warrant Batman visiting in prison This joker is played by Barry Keoghan (the guy who played Druig in Eternals. The guy who can control minds). You can’t see him that well in this but in the deleted he is very deformed. A common origin story for the joker in the comics (and the 1989 movie. Although his origin changes a lot), is the joker falls into a vat of acid and get the white skin and green hair But normally since it’s a comic the acid just makes his skin perfectly white. Doesn’t act like real acid But this joker’s face is definitely burned and scarred by acid. This joker is kinda controversial but I think the actor is great and has really nailed the laugh. I don’t think he will be the main villain in the sequel. Since the joker has been done a lot of times. But having him be an ex villain in prison that Batman can visit will be a cool dynamic in my opinion going forward

I do like the look at his sort of early years version of batman before he has a lot of high tech gadgets, his batmobile is soldered together with scrap metal that looks like he found in junk yard, and is still even trying to figure out what Batman is supposed to be for the city. I also love the portrayal of the Riddler in this movie and the delineation between intelligence and sanity. it's less of a wacky cartoon character that I'm used to seeing him as.

Thank you Jax :)

Mark Hamill wasn't Batman but voiced the Joker in many things and was great at it, always with Kevin Conroy playing Batman. I had my doubt with Robert Pattinson playing Batman but the movie is very good. My favorites are from the Tim Burton movies. Michael Keaton as Batman, Michelle Pfeiffer as Catwoman, Danny Devito as Penguin, Jack Nicholson as Joker. Those movies doesn't seem dark now, but Batman before those was the Adam West comedic shows, that was quite a change in tone.

Love this movie so much!! Love that we get a detective story. Batman is often called the world's greatest detective so finally seeing a story like this was great! Slight correction Jax, Mark Hamill was the voice of The Joker. Kevin Conroy(RIP) was Batman in the animated series! It's honestly hard picking a favorite Batman. All of them have brought something unique to the character! And no matter how many times I see it, I still don't know how Penguin is Colin Farrell!
