Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings (Full Reaction)

Hey everyone! This was such an awesome movie! Going into it blindly, with nothing but some Easter Eggs from the Iron Man movies to guide me was pretty darn fun. What a great build up to finally showing us who is truly behind The Ten Rings!

Synopsis: Martial-arts master Shang-Chi confronts the past he thought he left behind when he's drawn into the web of the mysterious Ten Rings organization.

Make sure to keep watching for the two post credit scenes that are available! Also, be fully prepared for me to get the names for Ta Lo and Tai Lung from the Kung Fu Panda movies completely mixed up!

Watched on: Disney+ / Runtime: 2:15:22

Hope you are having a great Wednesday! ❤️🐑🎉

Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings (Full Reaction)

They very much took this in a new direction...and it's not very accurate to the comics, but it's pretty damn fun...really enjoyed this movie. It's still unfortunate that we'll never get the Tony vs Mandarin stuff we *should* have gotten....but they absolutely did right by the Mandarin's character(frankly I think they made him better than he was in the comics) and made up for using him as a punch-line.

Movie: Establishing shots of Golden Gate Bridge, Alcatraz, Coit Tower, Transamerica Pyramid, Lombard Street Jax: "You're in LA." Movie: [sigh] "Swing and a miss." :D ;)

It's possible that you're right but everything that I've seen post Endgame gives me the impression that the MCU is rudderless. The Infinity Saga had loose threads/abandoned plots but it was always moving the story forward. Every movie and show feels separate and not working towards anything larger than themselves. That was always the main appeal of the MCU. On their own most of the movies were mediocre but they built on each other.

Loved your reaction! Also the big monster that Wong was fighting is Emil Blonsky, or Abomination. His last appearance was in the Incredible Hulk! so there was a 13 year gap between his appearance and this lol. It was a big deal for early mcu fans Also, phase 4 and 5 is hit and miss in terms of fan opinions. but try to avoid reviews as much as possible. Because I found that you enjoyed a lot of the less liked movies from phase 1-3 because you went in blind and didn’t have expectations. And that was a breath of fresh air seeing your positive reaction to movies less people liked (same with the xmen movies) And while I can’t speak for you, I feel like you’re gonna enjoy phase 4 and 5 a lot (I myself have liked those phases more than a lot of fans. I try to have an open mind as much as possible)

That is true but only because we haven’t got answers yet. Doesn’t mean it’s a mess. Even in the infinity saga there was a lot of unanswered plot threads. The Mandarin being one, also the leader, abomination, scorpion, etc. It’s just The Infinity saga was shorter so we got answers quickly and we got the big answers when small answers were left open. The issue is with so many shows she movies (regardless of your opinion on them) it takes longer to get sequels so answers can take years to get answers. Luckily for Jax she doesn’t have to wait as long since she’s watching these on streaming a few years post release

Bruce’s arm is in a sling since his arm was damaged heavily from when he snapped to bring everyone back! Also Brie Larson is in like every movie that this director has made so her cameo was a nice touch since obviously she couldn’t have been in the regular movie!

Shang-Chi was marketed as the MCU’s newest Avenger.

I agree with you about The Avengers roster always evolving. Going back to the original comics, i remember that you're aware of the original lineup. Thor, Hulk, Ironman, Antman, and Wasp coming together due to Loki. Their roster was ever shifting. Hulk left almost immediately. Antman became Giant Man in issue 2. Cap was found frozen in suspended animation, in issue 4. And by issue 16, Thor, Ironman, Giant Man, and Wasp left leaving Cap to lead the new recruits, Hawkeye, Wanda, and Pietro. Btw, Danny's city was K'un Lun 😉 And your prediction about, "Is that Trevor?" Greatest prediction ever!!! I never saw that coming lol 😃

I thought for a while that Lambie was missing the story, and you'd have to do a "Lambie Encore". One thought that hit me on the ring color difference other than user's intent was perhaps Blue because the father had simply found them, but the son first "won" them and was subsequently presented them when his dad released them to him. In other words he got them legitimately. Nice reaction Jax!

I think Bruce's arm sling is from when he un-did the Snap in Endgame. This movie was even better on the second watch... thanks, Jax!

This was a really cool movie, probably the best of Phase 4 (other than Spider-Man). Just a heads up that post-Endgame MCU continuity is a mess. There are so many plots, especially the after-credits scenes, that go nowhere. Nothing feels connected, it's really different than the Infinity Saga.

Cameron

I love Shang-Chi: and the Legend of the Ten Rings! I can't wait to check out your reaction 🐉

Thank you so much for the double drop! I'm SO EXCITED TO WATCH THIS!!! I hope you've had a wonderful week so far Jax!

Ontario’s very own Simu Liu mostly did television shows, but not only is this his first movie. He’s also the lead role and a superhero. This is also Meng’er Zhang’s first mainstream role. She’s mostly done a lot of theater work, but thankfully her co-star Sir Ben Kingsley has a lot of experience in both stage and camera acting. He would offer her advice on how to tell the two apart. The Ten Rings have been in the MCU since the beginning. They’re the same organization that kidnapped Tony in Afghanistan. After his wife died, Wenwu resumed operations. One of the first things he had his men do was take Tony hostage so he could build a Jericho missile for them. This film was originally slated to premiere in February 2021 in part to celebrate Lunar New Year. However, COVID delayed everything and the movie had to be postponed until September of the same year. They were able to film about a third of the movie (including the bus fight) over the course of two months before they had to go on hiatus and send the cast and most of the crew home. The director Destin Daniel Cretton was among the few who stayed behind to move along with post-production. Four months later, they were able to resume. Part of the reason is because they were filming in Australia. COVID cases there weren’t as high as in most other countries at the time. Another month later, Simu and Meng’er were able to put on their superhero costumes for the first time. Even though I had seen posters of Shang-Chi in his costume months before the film premiered, I was still surprised when I went to see this movie in theaters for the first time that the jackets made for Shang-Chi and Xialing were made of dragon scales. According to designer Andy Park, the triangle motif on Shang-Chi’s costume symbolizes the endless cycle of life, death, and rebirth. The complete costume is made up of the three parts that tell the full story of his journey: 1.) the dragon scale armor from his mother 2.) the rings from his father 3.) the Air Jordans from his time in the States In the comics, the ten rings are worn around the fingers. Back in Iron Man 3, even Trevor wore ten brass rings as part of his Mandarin costume. For the MCU, the rings were modeled after Hung Gar rings. They were purposely designed to be worn around the arms like bracelets since having them worn on the fingers would’ve felt too similar to the Infinity Stones on Thanos’ gauntlet. Andy Le who portrays Death Dealer (the Ten Rings operative in the white mask) and Cambodian actor D.Y. Sao were Simu Liu's personal trainers. The three of them started practicing the fight choreography months ahead of filming. Simu’s training had two components: strength/flexibility and martial arts. He had to learn two different styles for Shang-Chi based on his character’s parents: tai chi (his mom’s more graceful and pacific style) and wing chun (his dad’s more aggressive and menacing style). Also, when Simu's actual parents would call him, it wasn't to check up on him but rather they wanted to know if he got to work with Tony Leung that day. Record label 88 Rising brought a number of their musicians together for this album along with some special guests from other labels to create the official soundtrack, and half of the songs made their way into the final film. There’s also a video on Insider’s YouTube channel that goes further into detail as to how the bus fight scene was put together. And finally, the story about Ta Lo was also published in a childrens' book that’s tied to this movie. It's called "Who Guards My Sleep?" A lot of popular characters from other franchises such as Pokémon and Naruto are based on the mythical creatures that reside in Ta Lo.
