X-Men: First Class (Full Reaction)

It's Movie Monday!!

During the height of the Cold War, Charles Xavier meets Erik Lehnsherr. The start of their epic frenemy relationship begins. We get to see the origin story for many of the characters we've grown to love in the X-Men world. What a delightful tale!

X-Men: First Class (Full Reaction)

You say you're watching through the X-men movies to get to Deadpool, but he's more like the dessert. Logan is the steak dinner in this series. Even though it comes after Deadpool... so I guess we get dessert first? unless Deadpool 2 counts as dessert and Deadpool is the guilty pleasure appetizer?

Just such a great movie and a great way to do a soft reboot of the series! McAvoy and Fassbender do such an amazing job with their parts and what we see from them moving forward is great too! I love that you're watching Stranger Things too because the scene between Xavier and Erik at the radio antenna is so similar to the scene in season 2 with Eleven and Kali about using emotions to use their power! I know most are excited to see you get closer to Deadpool, I'm actually really excited to see you getting closer to Logan! That is just an incredible movie and I'm very very excited to see you react to that! Love Kevin Bacon as the villain! He was so great! This made me think of that six degrees to Kevin Bacon thing and I realized that I can actually connect myself to Kevin Bacon in six degrees and I can actually do it twice in different ways so that blew my mind! Can you connect to Kevin Bacon in six degrees Jax?

This movie is in a weird spot for me, I do enjoy it for what it is, its a good movie. But it's not good for the continuity of the movies and the timelines, I also dislike how they did some of the characters. Magneto's story is one of the highlights for me here, he is such a compelling villain because even though I can't agree with his methods I can sympathize with his reasons.

DracoMint

I don't like how Fox decided to kill off the only unkillable character.

Doug Watson

Correct, for example here in Australia you can get the rogue cut of Days of future past through Youtube movies for a price but the extended cut of The wolverine is not available at all, only within the US I believe through Amazon prime

Andrew Polinski

The reason for things not lining up in this is simple this was supposed to be a soft reboot of X-Men after the disaster that was X-Men origins: Wolverine. They originally planned on doing a Origins: Magneto after Wolverine but they went the reboot route instead. I said in Origins: Wolverine ignore what you have seen, these next movies really have no continuity with the previous movies. Just to reiterate this not an origin story, it has nothing to do with the previous X-Men movies.

Andrew Polinski

Magneto is a boss. That's it. That's my whole comment.

I think this is one of the better X-Men movies. It's best to not question the timeline, change of actors, characters appearing earlier than they should compared to the original trilogy. Continuity is famously messy as a whole saga. A lot of things don't line up or make sense together.

Josh Peters

That I know of. Charles Xavier and Mystique (Raven Darkholme) did not have any kind of friendly relationship. I kind of prefer it that way. It's fine I guess for the movie's sake. Also, Alex Summers (Havok) is the brother of Scott Summers (Cyclops). I really like X-Men first class but it does deviate from the comic books. Which is fine but there are a bunch of things that don't add up with the first three X-Men movies. Some of which you noticed Jax. Good job on that 🙌🏼

Future_Boy85

when it comes to insanely rich people in comics, Iron Man and Batman are incredibly stingy compared to Professor X. lol

Mister Lou

Angry Vengeful Erik killing Nazis is the best Erik.

Christopher Boscarino

Do you remember at the end of X-men 3 the post credits scene “hello Moira”. I can’t believe it took you so long to figure out that it was Hank. Also when Raven was in Erik’s bed he said maybe in a few years then she transformed to the actress who played her in the original trilogy

The original Comic line-up included: Scott Summer (Cyclops) Jean Grey (Marvel Girl) Bobby Drake (Iceman) Warren Worthington (Angel) Hank McCoy (Beast) This is often seen as the First X-Men class, Xavier's original five X-Men members introduced in Uncanny X-Men #1 (1963). The flight suits worn by the X-Men in this film are a fun call back to the yellow and blue suits worn by the 1960s X-Men. Why did they change the line-up for the film? Well as the film's universe featured characters like Angel and Iceman as teenagers during the 2000s they of course wouldn't even be alive yet during the 1960s. So instead we got "Angel" Salvadore a character introduced in The 1980s New Mutant comics as a kind of replacement for Warren. And Alex Summers also known as Havok the older brother of Scott Summers aka Cyclops. Scott actually shows up in this film as a young teenager when Xavier uses Cerebro. We also see a young storm as well with her iconic white/grey hair. And of course Banshee a character introduced in X-Men #28 (Jan. 1967) who in the comics is Irish. Named after a female spirit in Irish folklore, something I wish they kept for this film but I guess this take on the character is of Irish descent. All these characters (minus Banshee and Salvadore) you met across the original films with Hank and Warren showing up in X-Men: The Last Stand. Bobby you met in X-Men (2000) who in these original 1960s comics looked like a man made of snow rather than ice. Was Beast always Blue? During the 1960s Beast like the film was just an agile guy with huge hands and feet. Later down the line Beast would be used in an anthology comic called Amazing Adventures where we saw his transformation into his "beast form" but instead of blue skin he was depicted as being grey. This was caused by self-experimentation further mutating him, similar to what we see happen in this film. Beast would later return in the Giant-Size X-Men (1975) run where he was depicted as being blue. During his re-introduction he was an Avenger so he wasn't featured much in X-men comics until later. Beast today is very much an important member of The X-Men and most people have forgotten about his connections to The Avengers thanks to the 1980s comics and the amazing X-Men Animated Series all showcasing him as an important member of the team. When are the other Mutants introduced? Giant-Size X-Men (1975) brought the X-Men back after 5 year long break after Stan Lee dropped the X-men to focus on other projects. Characters like Wolverine, Storm, Colossus, Nightcrawler, and Thunderbird were all introduced in this comic, Wolverine making his fist appearance in The Incredible Hulk #180 (1974) and then a year later he was added to this new X-men line up. They were formed by Charles Xavier with the goal of rescuing the original First Class members with both forming together to create the X-Men we know today. Then over the course of the next few decades new members were added to the team. Each decade of the X-Men kind of brings in a new generation of Mutants.

Just FYI, the Stryker in this movie is the father of William Stryker from the previous movies. In one of the scenes at CIA headquarters, someone speaking to him referred to his son, William. Jax, the next two movies in release order have multiple cuts. The Wolverine has a theatrical cut(2h6m) and an extended cut(2h18m). X-Men - Days Of Future Past has the theatrical cut(2h11m) and the extended Rogue Cut(2h28m). I think the theatrical versions of both are easier to find on streaming, but I'm not sure. In terms of when to watch the Deadpool movies, I believe the first one came out between "X-Men - Days Of Future Past" and "X-Men - Apocalypse". For Deadpool 2, DO NOT watch it until you've seen Logan. :)

So the Nazi officer at Auschwitz is played by Kevin Bacon. Kevin *Bacon*. Nice. Real nice. 😠 :-P :-)

Happy Hanukkah

Lamar, quit spoiling things and stick to just one comment. I know you can edit them.

Now, I’m SOLIDLY in the ‘just get to Deadpool’ camp, to be clear, but this, for me, was the brightest spot in your X-Men detour. Are you planning on doing the ‘New Mutants?’ I’d say the only good things about it are Anya Taylor Joy and the actress that plays ‘Arya Stark’ and that a filmmaker tried to introduce a ‘Slender Man’ villain. Other than that, it’s totally missable. CERTAINLY not worth delaying Deadpool

Lamar Smith

Dearest Jax, they will revisit Moira and her memory loss and relationship with Charles….. I think….. Maybe they won’t…… I can’t seem to remember. I would have to give this offering the highest points for the wardrobe department. I mean, a villain in a velvet suit, can’t go wrong. Do check your messages at your leisure.

Lamar Smith

I agree that the cast did a great job of portraying the characters that had been established in the earlier films. I didn't realize there were different versions of Wolverine and Days of Future Past. Thanks for letting me know!

It’s interesting to see that Erik had only been able to use his powers when he focused on negative emotions like anger. However, after meeting Charles he realized he could also use positive emotions from happier times in his youth. In a way, it’s almost like learning how to use the Force. Overall, James McAvoy and Michael Fassbender did a fantastic job portraying the younger versions of Charles and Erik. They did their best to portray two characters that Sir Patrick Stewart and Sir lan McKellen had already established. Both Charles and Erik delivered good arguments, especially when they were playing chess for the first time (which is also a callback to the end of the first movie). Neither side is entirely right or wrong. It almost feels like Steve and Tony in Civil War. There are humans who would accept them and be more than willing to coexist, but there are also many who would fear and oppose them. Darwin’s nickname is based on the theory of evolution called Darwinism which English naturalist Charles Darwin took part in establishing. Lucas Till always wanted to portray a superhero, but he jokingly said he didn’t want to portray Beast because he didn’t want to go through all that makeup. Lucas instead got Alex Summers/Havok while Nicolas Hoult ended up getting Hank McCoy/Beast. This movie was directed by Matthew Vaughn. He also worked on the Kick-Ass and Kingsman movies. In fact, after this Matthew would go on to direct the first Kingsman movie The Secret Service which I recommend. Up next is Wolverine 2013. There’s an unrated version that you won’t find on Disney Plus. That’s followed X-Men: Days of Future Past. I’m letting you know ahead of time that this movie also has an extended edition that you won’t find on Disney Plus. You’ll have to rent it, but you’ll benefit from getting more context out of the story.
