X-Men Origins: Wolverine

Since Logan is my favorite character in the X-Men world, I am thrilled he's getting an origin story. His past is such a mystery. Since he has healing abilities, we don't even know how old he is. Where did he come from, why does he have metal covering his skeleton, and why doesn't he have any memories from his past? I need to know!!

X-Men Origins: Wolverine

Comments

Nah, people noticed and its one of the reasons why some of these movies were received really poorly by the fans at the time. Sure casual watchers who didn't pay attention might not notice, but many of those did also have issues with them. I remember how the last stand and wolverine origins was hated back then, then the first class movies where some things were good but continuity and characters wasted/not done right was a big controversy even with the good movies.

Wow! I never knew that! Thanks

Jacqueline

That was a bit confusing since in the first movie they never me tinned that! 😂

Jacqueline

I'm excited to see a new cast portray these characters!

Jacqueline

Thank you!! I will make sure to go into Deadpool knowing it's a different storyline. ❤️

Jacqueline

Thank you!

Jacqueline

X-tremely fun reaction🙏🏾

Jax: Just adding another voice to the chorus saying this Deadpool isn't the same Deadpool from the Deadpool movies. (Although each DP film references this movie at least once.) Natalie Gold fell into that misunderstanding during her watch-through of the first DP movie, and she was very confused for the first third of it. We're all trying to make sure you don't fall into the same trap.

I personally can't wait for First Class! The music, the acting, the sound design, the cinematography, the set design, just EVERYTHING is amazing about it. I know most people love Days of Future Past more, but First Class is my first favorite.

So the issue with the X-men franchise is although it’s the same franchise meant to be in the same continuity, a lot of things are retconned throughout the films, so the Deadpool you see in this movie isn’t the same Deadpool in his own movies (thank god, this Deadpool wasn’t really even deadpool at all). The Deadpool in his solo movies is much more accurate to the comics and you’ll like him a lot more. However the Deadpool movies still have a lot of references and mentions of events that happens in the x-men movies after this one so that’s why everyone recommended that you watch the X-Men films first.

Idk if you put two and two together but Victor is Sabertooth from the first X-Men movie

Oh and as to your question about felling trees in this or that direction, it’s a simple process, you cut a notch into the tree the direction you want it to fall not quite to the center of the tree. You then go around to the other side of the trunk and start cutting straight through the trunk, I think just under where your notch is. The tree will fall in the direction of the notch. Experienced loggers pride themselves on being able to hit a dime chucked on the ground with a felled tree, they’re so precise.

Lamar Smith

that has to have come up in the comics at some point, right? Deadpool must have done that on purpose at some point just to see what would happen, lol.

These movies were before the MCU really cemented the idea of a 'Cinematic Universe' as we've come to know it. Plot points loosly connect, other things are dropped, some things brought up to never be mentioned again, etc. Also remember the X-Men movies you watched over the course of a week or so was spread out over almost a decade in real time. By the time these movies came out the casual movie audience either didn't remember or didn't care about the finer points of continuity. I don't think it was until the first Avengers that casual fans really started paying attention to these things. Now the opposite is almost true. MCU has so much built up story and continuity expected by fans that they seem to have started getting into a creative bind with some of these plot threads making sense in the overall stroy.

Now, here’s a thought experiment, let’s imagine a character can heal to the nth degree, ok? What if we, say, strapped that character to a conveyor belt with a saw and sawed that character EXACTLY in half. What would happen?

Lamar Smith

On ‘Gambit’s’ powers, I’m prepared to be corrected but Gambit, in the comics, can imbue anything with kinetic energy. It doesn’t HAVE to be cards but it makes some sense, no? You see a guy playing around with a deck of cards, you don’t worry…… until the 7 of Diamonds hits you like a ton of bricks. There’s a larger issue, though, about the powers and the presentation of the same from Avengers to X-Men. The public sees Cap with his shield and is inspired. Many regular folk see Mutant/X-Man powers and label them ‘freaks.’ You could sit down and easily do a side-by-side comparison: “Ok, Colossus is strong and can turn his skin into metal but he’s not as strong as the Hulk.” Consider the reaction to the display of those powers, though. Hulk defending NY is heroic. At the end of the day, though, the mutant that saves you from another mutant is still a mutant. In the X-Men universe powers are always a bit mysterious and treated with a bit more circumspection. For the X-Men a person with a clipboard going around to mutants, asking what the limits of their powers are, what their weaknesses are is inherently a threat. Because of their, sort of, underground/guerilla nature, they tended to be a little more secretive.

Lamar Smith

As you move forward, let yourself just accept the story/stories as presented. Don’t spend any time saying, “Wait! That’s not what happened!…… I thought that…” It’ll just bog you down.

Lamar Smith

Yeah, don’t in any way get ‘married’ to this timeline. I’m sure there are more people more knowledgeable about the moviemaking process but, from my understanding, the Avengers series and all the individual origin stories for them had a very, I guess, top-down approach. Each Avengers story may have been written by a different writer but there was some sort of over-arching script continuity department. I’m guessing they’d submit a written script to be checked against some sort of master narrative to make sure there were no loose ends or contradictory facts introduced. I think the X-Men series were more along the lines of make-one-see-how-it-does-get-approved-for-another. If that’s somewhat true, it puts more pressure on each X-Man movie to come up with something more spectacular, thus you get strange notions that veer away from the comic. Your reaction to the Ryan Reynolds portion of the character, where he actually has a personality, bodes well for you REALLY enjoying DP. One tiny note, I stuck with you through the credits and noticed something for the first time. Daniel Negreanue (sp?) is credited as one of the poker players in Nawlins. He’s an actual professional poker player.

I think Jax may be too young to realize the significance of Three Mile Island. :) The Three Mile Island nuclear powerplant in Harrisburg PA had a partial meltdown in 1979. This movie insinuates that story was a coverup for what really happened. :)

A seriously flawed movie, but it does have some fun moments. And no, that's NOT Deadpool in any real sense. They completely twisted the character into something very different from the comics. The guy Ryan Reynolds plays in the future movies is MUCH closer to the Deadpool in the comics. Overall, this movie gets completely ignored in the continuity of any future X-Men movies, including the references to Xavier, Cyclops, etc. For me the biggest standout in this movie is Liev Schreiber as Victor, aka the mutant we eventually come to know as Sabretooth in the first X-Men movie. And of course Lynn Collins is an absolute GODDESS of a woman :)

Weapon X Program: The Weapon X Program depicted in this film is pretty differant to the comics. Striker for one was never apart of this program, only after these films released did they kind of retcon into the comics that Striker during his early life may have been involved in the Weapon X program just not to the level we see in these films as he was only a sergeant in the army and would later go on to become a controversial preacher and televangelist, pretty much what most fans know him as from God Loves, Man Kills. But if you go back and read over Weapon X and other comics connected to Logan's history there's no mention or appearance of Striker, even these hints of his being involved were pretty limited. Wolverine was also abducted into the Weapon X program in the comics while for the film he volunteers a pretty big change, naturally Logan being kidnapped and experimented on is far more impactful than them simply wiping his memory and Logan getting upset. ----------------------------------------------------------- Connections to Captain America: In the comics the Weapon Plus Program was based on Project Rebirth which gave birth to Captain America. Steve Rogers is often branded as Weapon l the first attempt at creating the perfect super-soldier. Logan is known as Weapon X the tenth instalment of the Weapon Plus Program that gave Wolverine his Adamantium skeleton. We of course see Wolverine fighting during WW2 during D Day in that amazing introduction a conflict that gave birth to Captain America as well. Logan and Steve actually met in 1941, within the city of Madripoor and fought together a few times throughout the conflict in the comics. I'm pretty sure I've mentioned this before but Marvel did try to get Hugh Jackman to cameo in Captain America: The First Avenger as a captured POV in France who I assume would've been rescued by Cap. But this would've been perfect for these two to share the spotlight with their future shared history. ------------------------------------------------------------ Possible Wakanda connection? The start of the film with Team X and Stryker looking for a meteor rock in Africa is seen by many as a possible Wakanda reference. The locals hold this rock as something special saying it came from the sky so many have wondered if this could've been vibranium, In the comics adamantium is made from mixing steel with vibranium. But the term vibranium is never spoke in this film for legal reasons so we can only assume using knowledge from the comics. There's also a deleted scene that shows a young Ororo Munroe (Storm) within the village, Storm was raised in Harlem, New York City and Cairo, Egypt in the comics but does have connections to Black Panther as well. Hakeem Kae-Kazim the actor playing the man in charge of the Diamond operation in Largos would later voice T'Chaka the former King of Wakanda, Black Panther, and father to T'Challa in The Avengers: Earths Mightiest Hero's. T'Chaka in live action was played by John Kani in Civil War (2016) when the Vienna International Centre was bombed and he was killed, T'Chaka also showed up in flashbacks and within the Ancestral Plane to speak with T'Challa played by the late Chadwick Boseman. ------------------------------------------------------------ Kayla Silver Fox: Kayla Silver Fox played by Lynn Collins is from the comics where she was in a relationship with Logan just like this film. She is also killed by Sabretooth but this was revealed to be a false memory from an implant given to him by the Weapon X Program. Silver Fox would later be killed for real in the comics by Sabretooth. ----------------------------------------------------------- Sabretooth: In the comics Victor Creed, also known as Sabretooth has no relation with Wolverine in the comics. He even made his first appearance in an Iron Fist comic back in 1977 and overtime just kind of became a rival to Wolverine. He was a member of Nick Fury's black ops team known as The Avengers back in 1959 (Precursor to The Avengers Superhero Team) and later during the mid 1960s would be apart of Team X along with Logan. Sabretooth would also service in the Vietnam War, modern times he would fight Iron Fist and then a bunch of storylines of him and Wolverine fighting each other. ----------------------------------------------------------- Caged Mutants: There's alot of Mutant cameos when Kayla and Logan decide to free all the mutants in Strikers prison. We see a red head mutant with his mouth covered, presumably this is Sean Cassidy a Mutant called Banshee who can produce a sonic scream, named after the female spirit in Irish folklore. We see a kid with a lizard tongue who may be a young Mortimer Toin also known as Toad who we see in the first X-Men films. There's a girl with freezing powers similar to Iceman who may be the Mutant Ice Princess. There's a kid who can form a tornado, this could be Riptide. We see a pretty important character that being Emma Silver Fox who in this film is Emma Frost a character who can turn their skin to Diamonds. Emma has alot of connections to the X-Men in the comics and even became leader to the mutant community. So here's the big one for many. We see a white haired Mutant who is tied up trying to break free by using super speed. This is Peter/Petrio Maximoff better known as Quicksilver the twin to Wanda Maximoff. Alot of these cameos would be retconned later and overall X-Men Origins: Wolverine is kind of just forgotten about by fans so most people didn't really care about the retcons and preferred the stories we got from them. ----------------------------------------------------------- Deadpool: So yeah... That aren't my Deadpool lol The studio from my understanding knew this and actually planned to set up the character for the future that's why we see him at the end of the film shushing the audience. A pretty risky take for the character that was undone with Deadpool (2016) a film fans very much loved.

LittleGalaxyBoy

Not my favorite movie, but it is an enjoyable enough popcorn and soda movie. Hugh Jackman and Liev Schreiber did do really well and they were a lot of fun to watch, but there are a fair number of problems. I kind of always thought that this might have been a victim of editing and having things cut down that should have been in it. The previous movie, The Last Stand was the first Marvel post credits scene, I believe. And this movie came out in 2009, so it actually came out after the first Iron Man movie! Also, Logan's full name is James Logan Howlett. He seemed to prefer going by Logan while Victor called him by nickname given their being brothers.

Totally ignore everything you have seen in terms of plot, story and Deadpool in all of these X-Men films, they do not carry over to anything going forward. The characters and those portraying these characters you want to remember (again except for the Deadpool in this movie). This is a bad movie everything from the really bad dialog, to the horrific special effects, his claws look like plastic in this movie. The way Gambit moves in the alley way was very unrealistic. I also have not figured out to this day how did he got to the roof so quickly to jump down and explode the ground underneath Sabretooth and Wolverine. This movie had more plot holes than swiss cheese. Yes The Blob is Fred Dukes name in the comics

Andrew Polinski

Yeah actually forget everything you've learned about Deadpool in this movie. It's not the same one we meet in the movies later (he also doesn't have a million powers like this one).

Josh Peters

It's not a good movie in my opinion (and many others' too). This is NOT Deadpool actually loool, they butchered him in this movie. The next Wolverine solo movie, "The Wolverine", is much much better I feel.

Andy

This movie is will.i.am’s first acting role. In the comics, John Wraith’s mutant codename is Kestrel which is a bird of prey known to hover while hunting. He was one of my two favorite mutants in this film. My other favorite is Remy LeBeau/Gambit. He’s a pretty well-known character among the X-Men. Anything in his hands is a deadly explosive once they’re charged with kinetic energy. That includes a deck of cards which are his favorite pastime. He also carries a bo staff as a secondary weapon. Gambit is also one of the main members of the X-Men in the 90’s cartoon. The continuation X-Men ‘97 is now streaming. Looks like you’re now racing The Perfect Mix up the X-Men ladder. They’re watching an X-Men movie every two weeks. Next week, they’ll be watching First Class same as you.
