Megamind (Full Reaction)

Welcome to the Megamind watch-a-long! This movie was such a blast! Megamind (Will Ferrell) is a brilliant supervillain whose goal is to defeat Metro Man. When he is successful at defeating his lifelong nemesis, he must contemplate what else life has to offer.

I've only seen this movie once in theaters when I was 15 before this rewatch and the only thing I remembered was liking the movie, took my little bro with me and he is now 18.... time flies and this movie aged like wine.

This is a fun one, but for me sits one step below the greats like HTTYD and BH6. I feel like it drags just a little in the middle part, after MetroMan 'dies' and before Hal gets his powers. Going by soundtrack though this one wins by a mile :)

Oh! That makes sense!

Yes! This movie reminded me of the relationship between Batman and the Joker. I hadn't realized there were so many different DC references! That's so cool. ♥️

Blahlahlahlahlah. (God, I wish I could figure out how to do a fist-bump emote.)

Code: I am so glad you loved this movie! First time I ever saw it, I was just like you, enthralled from the start. And even making some of the same calls (You beat me on Metro Man living tho, that one threw me). No matter how many times I watch this movie, I still have an absolute dear love for it.

LOVE the BH6 callback!!…. Have you seen the ‘Hotel Transylvania’ series? You’d really like them

"Why do I feel so... mel-anch-o-ly ?" lives rent free in my mind.

Oh! And if someone hasn't recommended it already, another good Will Ferrel movie is "Stranger than Fiction."

There are three animated movies that are all my favorite. It just depends on my mood that day, because they're all so good. "Megamind," "Big Hero 6," and "Wall-E". It was so much fun to rewatch this here. I never get tired of this movie. I am of the opinion that this is by far superior to "Despicable Me," (which is not bad, don't get me wrong), with a better villainous protagonist, cooler minions (both Minion and the Brain Bots), and an all-around cleverer vibe. It's sad that it didn't get more recognition when it came out. I'm glad you liked it. The only downside is that I will be greeting people by saying "Ollo" for the next day or two because it's freshly stuck in my head now.

Megamind is a fun movie, I think the reason it's not more well know is that it came out at the same year as Despicable Me. Gru and his minions stole people heart.

This film is filled with so many fun little nods and references to both DC and Marvel comics. Megamind feeling like his life has no meaning without Metro Man reminds me of the Batman Animated Series, episode The Man Who Killed Batman. Thinking Batman is really dead Joker, voiced by Mark Hamill says: "Without Batman, crime has no punchline." Metro City Prison for the Criminally Gifted is a parody of Xavier's School for Gifted Youngsters, featured in X-Men media. Always happy to see X-Men references lol I personally feel like this film is based on "What if Lex Luthor defeated Superman" Luthor being Superman's nemesis and everything. Metro Man is of course a parody of Superman, humanoid looking alien who was sent to Earth as a child in a rocket. But the big difference being Metro Man was raised in a mansion, raised in a high income environment while Superman was raised on a rural farm, gives birth to two very differant hero's. Now I want a storyline where the Wayne's raised Superman lol Megamind landing in a prison parallels heavily with the Elseworld's story Superman: Red Son This story saw infant Superman crash-landing in the USSR and raised as a tool of the Soviets instead of crash landing in America. Elseworlds are just any story that takes place outside of the Mainline DC Continuity, alternate Earths etc. Metro Man faking his own death reminds me of the 52 storyline that saw Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman faking their deaths and temporarily retiring post Infinite Crisis a massive event similar to infinity War. The Metro Man Museum seems to be based on The Flash Museum or at least a little tribute. The many Flash's are the only hero's who comes to mind that has a massive Museum based around and named after them. Imagine Superman has one as well, Maybe Iron Man has one in the MCU after Endgame but Flash Museum is one of the first examples of a well known Superhero Museum. Hal Stewart seems to be based on photographer Jimmy Olsen a friend of Superman. Also seems inspired by photographer Eddie Brock a rival character to Peter Parker and Spider-Man. The character of Hal Stewart seems to be a named after two of the most famous Green Lateran's. Hal Jordan and my personal favourite John Stewart both members of the Justice League. Hal also wears a little sad face badge a fun tribute to Alan Moore's Watchmen graphic novel that depicts a superhero known as the Comedian wearing a yellow smiley face badge. Watchmen are DC but separate Earth. Megamind transforms Hal into Titan is VERY Captain America minus the whole gaining super powers part. Pulled more from the comics as Captain America: The First Avenger was released a year after Megamind. Overall there's far more DC references than Marvel. If this film released deeper into the 2010s with all the Marvel hype then I could see it being more inspired by that. But overall it's an amazing film that uses so many cool elements from comics to create an origin story with relatable characters, still one of my favourite films.
