The Falcon and the Winter Soldier E4 (Full Reaction)

Things escalate as John Walker and Battlestar get more invested in the fight against the Flag Smashers. Unfortunately, "The Whole World Is Watching". I can't help but feel badly for John Walker in this episode.

The Falcon and the Winter Soldier E4 (Full Reaction)

Comments

For the last three episodes you've mentioned John Walker, the 'new' Captain America, and his supposed super strength, using it to discuss his character and motivations. I feel like there's an important detail you might have missed from his episode 2 TV interview, and I'm surprised no one has brought it up yet. In the interview, John Walker says, 'Look, here’s the thing, uh, I’m not Tony Stark, I’m not Dr. Banner, okay? I don’t have the flashiest gadgets, I don’t have super strength. But what I do have is guts. Something Captain America always had, always needs to have, and I’m gonna need every ounce of it. Because I got big shoes to fill.' The key part here is, 'I don't have super strength.' This made me see him as just a regular guy who is exceptionally brave and a decorated soldier. I just wanted to share this perspective. I'm really enjoying your reactions and your unabashed adoration for Chris Evans — oops, I mean Steve Rogers! 🤭 Keep up the great work!

This is another example of taking “villains” who have reasonable POVs, realizing that it makes the “heroes” look naive or wrongheaded, and making the villains do something inexplicably and cartoonishly “evil” so you don’t sympathize too much. See: Killmonger shooting his gf.

Hi Jax! Thoroughly enjoying revisiting the MCU with you. I LOVE reliving this universe vicariously through other people, and your reactions are delightful! You also bring up many interesting perspectives throughout all the movies and shows! Something to note for Bucky's fighting the others who took the serum is that among other things, he is often seen fighting not one but multiple super soldiers. They are at least just as strong (not verified exactly the potency of this newer serum but from the explanation in the series, it is pretty much the equivalent of Erskine's serum). They may not be trained as highly in combat, but still good enough, and being just as strong, can still crowd him. That coupled with factors mentioned already (Bucky suffering from PTSD, holding back subconsciouly so as not to kill, etc) can explain why he gets knocked around a bit before downing them. But in many scenes, we can see he moves still much more smoothly and decisively than the others and still pulls off technique reminiscent of the Winter Soldier movie though. One common criticism of Bucky's prowess consistency is that he was muuuuch scarier in the second Cap movie, and while that's a super valid criticism of any villain turned hero, these are often valid explanations why they're not as deadly or scary once they turn over a new leaf. They hold back, they second guess, they're used to acting without restraint and now they HAVE to have some. It makes them much less dangerous. (Also we've seen the difference the few times Bucky got reactivated, Marvel showed us how much scarier he is when he's back in Winter Soldier mode) Sorry for the wall of text lol.

I'm so glad you're enjoying watching this with me! I hadn't thought about how Bucky's PTSD would have impacted his fighting. You make such a great point! ❤️

Jacqueline

Loving your excitement for this show. It is second only to the god of mischief in my MCU show ranking. I love this show and all the new characters it introduced. I agree that Bucky is the superior super soldier and that if not for his PTSD, he would be able to mow down other supers no problem. Heroes always pull their punches anyway, but Bucky has that added factor of never wanting to loose control and kill someone. Now onto episode 5!

CheshireKat528

Haha you’re asking about the hierarchy of super soldier and how Buck should be at the top tier, as he floors 3 of the flagsmashers in 2 min 😂

Alex Gonzalez

I'm glad I am not the only one who thought Bucky should be stronger than these people!

Jacqueline

I agree! Steve was incredible because of his heart, not the shield.

Jacqueline

The most important thing about Steve was never the serum or the shield, it was his heart. He was truly good. That's why Erskine picked him over just the average soldier. At the start of this show Sam says "symbols are nothing without the men and women that give them meaning." It's understandable why the U.S. gov wouldn't retire the Captain America persona because it's such a powerful symbol but they can't replace Steve.

Cameron

You're absolutely right that none of these people should be able to hold their own against Bucky. He's a super soldier, has a vibranium arm, and more combat experience than anyone (including Steve). The MCU just gets sloppier the further it goes post Endgame. We never get any clarity on so many things, like where's Steve? Is he still alive? Still love your reactions though.

Cameron

I love that you gave Vanilla Almond tea a try! Sorry it's not for you. ❤️

Jacqueline

Hahah! Captain Sham-erica is awesome!!

Jacqueline

You made such a great point about why Karli puts on the mask! Haha! I hadn't thought of that. I'll check that scene out again with Sharon at the docks!

Jacqueline

I love that it felt like the older days of TV. While I love binge watching, having an episode to watch each week makes the show last longer.

Jacqueline

Ooh! I thought he had already taken it at the start of the show.

Jacqueline

By the way, I tried the Vanilla Almond tea you said was your favorite, but sadly, it's just not my cup of tea. (Sorry about the pun!) Back to Lemon Zinger for me.

Horace Cocroft

I knew you'd love this series! Most Marvel fans seem to give it a "B" grade, but the Captain America guys were always your favorites, so I thought you'd have a strong reaction to the story. Also, you asked where Cap is during all of this (Steve Rogers, not fake Captain Sham-erica). He's on a secret base on the moon, haven't you heard?

Horace Cocroft

It may shatter the illusion, but I think Karli puts on the mask when she fights, so they can use her stunt double without having to constantly find creative ways to hide her face. 😂 I really like the fight scene with Sharon Carter (Emily VanCamp) in the docks for this very reason. The stunt double for that fight is Jess Durham. They basically pull every trick in the book to hide her face, including using multiple "texas switches" to have the stunt performer do the stunt, and then have Emily VanCamp appear in camera just before or just after, in the same shot. Rewatch it and notice how seamless it is, and how well the stunt performer is able to convey a lot of action and intention whilst very carefully keeping her hair in front of her face the whole time.

Onno Smits

Jax, I noticed you made a similar comment about Wandavision about the "Previously On" recaps at the start. When these first came out, they were dropping episodes one per week, so it felt like older days of TV.

Tony M

Yep I was gonna say the same thing. No need to repeat it since you summed up everything!

Connor Vide

The Dora Milaje are not "super soldiers" (only the Black Panther takes the heart shaped herb). They are simply some of the best trained warriors in the world. Walker is not a "super soldier" at the beginning of this episode. He only becomes one by taking the serum that Zemo failed to destroy. The "proper" super soldier serum was lost with Erskine in WW2. Any attempts to re-create it before the batch that Karli had, have been largely unsuccessful and created "flawed" soldiers like Bucky or outright mistakes like the Hulk. As the serum Bucky received from Hydra was a poor recreation of Erskine's original this may account for how the Flag Smasher super soldiers are seemingly stronger here.

Danny Roberts

John Walker never took the super soldier serum until this episode, just FYI
