I was fortunate enough to stay at Kurokawa Onsen, doing the onsen ryokans and making use of the wooden-stamped 3 onsen pass (for 1800Y from memory). Some of those outdoor onsen had spectacular scenery and very little tourism, which was part of the attraction. It isn't easy to get to though.

RE Currency conversion on cards: If you want to know how much exactly you'll be paying in your home currency when making a purchase in Yen, card brands like Visa and Mastercard have currency conversion calculators (Google "(brand) currency conversion"). Your bank might have added foreign transaction fees, usually 2-3% in western countries, so take that into account (the calculators have the option to add it in). RE Local ATM withdrawals: It *might* not always be favourable if your bank has a high foreign transaction fee. In addition to the foreign transaction fee, you can also be hit with a foreign ATM transaction fee. If you travel overseas often, it's worth getting a card without foreign transaction/ATM fees. RE Overpay for Foreign "Cash Advances": Still works with most credit cards! Worth asking your bank in advance, but you shouldn't be charged cash advance fees or interest if your cash advance doesn't result in a positive account balance. Be wary about both the foreign transaction and ATM fees though as they would still apply.
