https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xVrSZ9zIDnQ This particular video's been on my YouTube suggestion list for several days, and I finally clicked on it. What a surprise! It's that Simon Whistler guy, better know n for "Today I Found Out", and he examines how Japan is doing. Is it finally climbing out of the 20 year economic doldrums? He says it is - and interestingly enough, he says that if your dream is to move to Japan and work, now is a better time than it has ever been, with only 100 applicants for every 150 job vacancies, and the Japanese government actually encouraging immigration. The foreign population of Japan (still very small) is supposed to double in the coming years.

The Marunouchi side is awesome, but the lesser known glassy Yaesu side has its own architectural claim to fame. That's because it was designed by the firm of German-American architect Helmut Jahn, a.k.a. the "Flash Gordon" of late 20th Century architecture. Jahn's done work internationally, but he's mostly based in Chicago. He also designed the United Terminal at Chicago O'Hare (including that underground passageway that connects the terminals) and the Sony Center at Potsdamer Platz in Berlin. He's done work in NYC, too. I used to be an architecture student in college. That's why I know about that guy. But I only found out recently that he designed the Yaesu side. On my next trip to Tokyo I'll definitely be visiting both sides of Tokyo Station. John, thanks for the station tour!
