This question is broader than SHUEISHA :) it's somethign I'll ask my friend Patrick about. He's the author of the OTAKU ENCYCLOPEDIA and will see if I can corner him into a live stream and discussion. The JUMP editors won't admit to reading US comics but I think they must - but they are not influenced by them. However, what influences an artist depends on the artist. Stories and plots tend to dig deeper than US comics. I think seeing the movie posters and cardboard cutouts, you can also see the strategy, the excitement for the content. Even real life adaptations of series seem to do well according to Sugihara-san.

2017-09-28 11:00:13 +0000 UTCJUMP has several global contests where prospective artists submit material. No schools etc. They look for budding pros or people with a background although that could change. No internships but it always is possible to be staff although Japanese skills must be native right now. As it gets more global, this may not be a requirement.

2017-09-28 10:56:54 +0000 UTCThe difference is that Shueisha can penetrate the global market better, grow the audience and get it out faster. Digital hasn't taken off yet because people still like to hold and feel the paper. Newspapers are still semi-popular with morning commuters! (Amazing they still have significant circulations here). Previously, JUMP was very limited to Japan and to the speed at which the zasshi could be sent to store, limited to what could and couldn't be sold. Distribution of content is not just easier, it's faster with the ability to interact more with fans - like with read polls and bonus material. Shueisha will get really creative with the digital content as the user base grows (and passes) the paper version and as the tech grows, I see augmented reality as being a def possibility :) now THAT would be cool.

2017-09-28 10:50:02 +0000 UTCI asked this to Sugihara-san afterwards. She personally said that a lot of the values transfer between both men and women. The stories on Shonen Jump are for boys but the audience is certainly much wider. She said she personally is much bolder and more ambitious that other Japanese ladies, maybe as a result of the stories - or just her personality :)

2017-09-28 10:48:02 +0000 UTCTHANK YOU for the questions! The PR lady didn't want to take many of them because she felt an editor should handle it -- so there is a chance to do a live stream with editors in the future! Right now, I am waiting out YouTube fixing the app for live streaming. The audio problems are bad - I don't have any problems with other apps like Instagram so hopefully the next update corrects the audio and streaming problems - or YouTube creates a LIVE STREAM APP :)

2017-09-28 02:53:41 +0000 UTCWhat are the primary differences between manga from Japan and American comics? Perhaps the PR people can speak not only about differences in content, but also about differences in production, marketing strategies, etc.

2017-09-28 01:46:24 +0000 UTCOne question from me... To cultivate artistic talent, do they go to schools to promote internship opportunities or run contest, etc.?

2017-09-28 01:42:05 +0000 UTCHow does manga influence young women in Japan?
Amanda C.
2017-09-28 01:29:36 +0000 UTCHow do you see the demographics of readers change with your magazine in general. In the west, most are neutral to what people as seen between shonen and shoujo.
