Tools for "tools for thought"

This talk gives a high-level overview of my work on tools for thought, and some of my design principles for working on such tools. It's adapted from an "overview" talk of sorts I was invited to give last month for a local group.

Much of the work shown here will likely be familiar to those who have followed my work for years; for those who are newer to my work, this will provide a quick survey. But for both groups, there will be new material in the discussion of design principles.

Thanks, David! There's lots more to explore here!

Thank you very much for this fascinating video. On the subject of experimenting with Quantum Country, I wonder why online reading sites like O'Reilly haven't picked up on this innovation. The overall reading experience on this site is frustrating. You lose the advantages of paper, without having many of the advantages of digital, as you say via the “Shifting what's salient” principle. Sometimes I'd like to be able to press the “C” key while I'm reading, so that I can see the context of the paragraph. It's like “zooming out” on the page to show where I am in the book, and which titles and subtitles are nearby. I'd also like, as you've experienced, everything I underline to be used to ask me questions about my understanding. Right now I have to do this manually, by exporting the file as a PDF and putting it into ChatGPT or Claude. In the end, for the time being, I still often prefer reading on paper.
