Design-in-action: book markup grid

Something a bit different this month: a look inside a piece of my design process. In this video I talk through of a recent design for looking at an overview of all my annotations on a book. I discuss its influences, criticize it, and show an iteration.

Totally! And if-then stuff like "when I draw a circled 'M' that means I want to memorize it"…

Hm! My experience has been that if I wait a few weeks, then reflect on: "what did I get out of that tool / process?" my answers usually seem fairly reliable. Do you feel differently?

I wonder if you could create a symbology to trigger different color renderings (e.g. different shapes that your program can differentiate). Not sure how much friction that adds when taking notes though.

Appreciate the opportunity to glimpse your design and thinking process. Mr. Ochshorn’s idea of “making your own book out of the book” reminds me of Mortimer Adler’s “reading is for understanding” principle. I wrestle with the review process, too, especially after finishing a thought-provoking book. How do you determine if a tool/workflow actually enhances that review process or not? Thank!
