Patreon-only video: Remarkable 2 unboxing

I've heard about e-ink tablets for writing for a while, but never really "got" the concept. I'm sure you already know I like digital note-taking, but I actually like analog note-taking too. I'm a huge fountain pen nerd and have quite a collection of pens, paper, and ink from all over the world. I felt like e-ink notebooks was the worst of both worlds: not as tactile as analog, not as easily shared as digital.

What has begun to change my mind is that I bought the Kindle Scribe when it came out in December 2022, with the view that I'd be using it for reading. And I did. It's been my eReader of choice since then, supplanting my trusty Oasis. But recently I've found myself actually using its handwritten note feature more and more, and it made me wonder about the Remarkable.

So i took the plunge! This video is a rambly one of me unboxing the Remarkable, setting it up, and talking about my first impressions of it.

Enjoy, and happy weekend!

My problem with the analog stuff is that I travel a lot, and I also only travel on a single backpack. So that means I'm leaving behind my pens and papers and inks most of the time. I do also really like the thought of being able to bring all that into Obsidian, of course. Digital always comes with tradeoffs...

I've had one since wave 2's preorder release and I haven't really gotten much use out of it. I used to scribble on digital sheet music that I would need to mark up or occasional doodles. This was a good reminder to update to the latest software version since some new features like infinite canvas was added, which might be useful in the future. I find that I like using all the other analog stationary that I have more just as a matter of preference, but maybe I will give this a go for some transient note taking again!

I also have the Supernote A6X2, which IMO has a better balance than the rM2 for that line between digital and analog that eink sits on. You can link your notes together on Supernote, search your handwriting and use the pen to proofread .docx documents. I’m using the SN to outline a fiction series that I’m writing. Generally speaking, I use the reMarkable 2 for consuming content and the Supernote for creating. Either way I’m definitely hooked on eink notetakers!

I got a reMarkable 2 in December. It took me awhile to appreciate it for what it is. My primary use case for it is commonplacing. I got the Type Folio and it is super seamless to switch from text (which is what I use for quoting from all kinds of media) to handwriting (which is how I take notes on the quotes I’ve recorded).
