Obsidian v1.2 Bookmarks and Emergence

I'd already done a preview a few weeks ago of the latest v1.2 version of Obsidian just for you lovely patrons, but next week I'm releasing a longer video about it now that it's been released to Insiders. I've had some time to think about how to incorporate it into my Obsidian workflows, and I thought I'd share that here with you all, a full week before everyone else gets to see it. Enjoy!

Note: This video will be unlisted until Friday, when I have to mark it as private shortly before it is published for everyone to see. If you try to watch it and get a "Private video" error, you've probably caught it in that small window. Wait a few hours and try again-- it will be published shortly.

🔴 Lazy GM note taking with Notion and Obsidian

This week, I had the unique pleasure of interviewing Mike Shea from Sly Flourish. Mike is most well-known in the TTRPG community, but others may not know that he's also developed an interesting system of note-taking for TTRPGs as well-- but he uses another app, Notion. Here are some highlights from the livestream:

Best tools for organizing PDFs

I also released my video on organizing PDFs this week, which patrons got a preview of last week. This video is all about my research regarding some tools for organizing PDFs particularly for my non-academic use case, including:

I chose Zotero... for now, at least!

What I'm working on

I've been working on a presentation linking the concept of emergence to load testing, and posting my progress on Mastodon and on my Obsidian Publish site. I'll be presenting it at KubeCon EU in Amsterdam next Wednesday-- tickets are already sold out for that conference, but if you're already going, come and say hi!

The latest build of v1.2 includes bookmarking blocks-- something which didn't make it into the video, unfortunately. More on this as soon as I've tested it a bit more!

Have a great weekend, everyone! I appreciate you.

Obsidian v1.2 Bookmarks and Emergence

Comments

Hey Jim! Glad you liked the use cases! They are what took the most time when doing the video, but I thought they were important. I personally would use a tag instead of a bookmark for system-related things. For example, to describe the status of a task or note. I use tags more for marking multiple notes across my vault, and bookmarks for specific single notes.

Thanks for a helpful breakdown of the bookmark functions, the use cases are particularly useful. Trying to wrap my head around how bookmarks map to the other structuring constructs in Obsidian, it seems like bookmarks are a more granular "tag" construct. When might you use a tag instead of a bookmark?

Jim Hanna

I hadn't even thought about that, but yeah, that seems like it would be awesome! I think the whole digital garden thing is difficult as a visitor because unless you have context for someone, it's hard to know what to search for. That would definitely help.

great video! One thing I've noticed is that the core plugins are operational in Obsidian Publish (Callouts work great there) so I am excited and hopeful to see Bookmarks integrated in Obsidian Publish as I think this will help out visitors wishing to zoom in on specific things they are looking for
