Patreon Q&A - July 2022

Hey all! Got any questions about Obsidian, PKM, or anything else that you'd like me to answer? Post your questions here until July 31st, and I'll make sure I answer them here on Patreon!

I'll also be making a public YouTube video of these questions and answers at the end of the month, especially for those that would be better explained with a screenshare.

Bring on the questions! :)

Hi Peter! Here is fine. :) Since vaults are just folders, you can create a "template vault" with all the plugins you typically want, and then just copy that whenever you want to create a new vault with those same plugins/settings. You can copy the entire folder like you would any other folder, and then open it up in Obsidian. I would argue that if you are concerned about security, Obsidian installed locally and with no plugins that could transmit your data to the internet (or no plugins at all) would be more secure than trusting Roam or any SaaS platform that stores your data on their servers. :) And yes, Roam does store your assets in a database you can't delete. However, if you're just trying to get around the lack of permissions you have on your laptop, you could perhaps look into: - Running a lightweight Linux distribution on a flash drive and installing Obsidian on it, then copying your vault there - Storing your Obsidian vault on your flash drive, and using the built-in text editor to view/edit your files-- you'll miss out on the Obsidian app features, but at least you can still access your files for later. - If you are familiar with GitHub, you could push your Obsidian vault to a private GitHub repo and work on it using an IDE on your work machine. I do this for my work repos. - There are services that can virtualize Obsidian and your vault. I was approached by one called Neverinstall: https://neverinstall.com/spaces/utility I declined to collaborate so please explore this at your own risk, but it is an option. Good luck! I'd be interested in what you end up going for. :)

Not sure if this thread is still active. Will repost to next Q&A thread if it is not. Went through and installed all of my plugins and such, then went to start a vault for work and realized there may be no way to copy over or sync the plugins and settings with the new vault. Is this the case or is there a way to easily setup new vaults without starting from scratch every time? Also, perhaps as a followup, wondering what, if any, options there are to effectively utilize Obsidian for work when you cannot or do not want to install the Obsidian app on the work machine. I would almost be tempted to try Roam for this but cannot bring myself to after seeing your video of the Google database you had to pull your attachments from. Plus the additional learning curve and pricing when I am already into Obsidian.

Having a look and editing some of the javascript and plugins to " .pages(`"Areas/Games/ttrpgs/${campaign}"`)" does not seem to help, whenever I click to generate a new campaign it puts it in TTRPGs on root of the vault vs in the Areas/Games/TTRPGs folder. Any instructions on what to fix if I wanted to rename the file structure of some of these templates?

Hey Nicole, having some issues with the D&D setup. I've moved the folders as I'm trying to organise your demo vault as a PARA system and working on fixing any issues I find (as a means of learning and troubleshooting Obsidian). Can't figure out what's going wrong here though. Every time I try and set up a new session and click the button I see this: https://cln.sh/K9Cx8m I've edited the button to point to the correct path. I see the issue is its already trying to use the same session number which exists. How can I make this just work like the demo without editing the button and changing the 002 to 003 for it to generate the note? https://cln.sh/62zg97
