Patreon Perks and Resources: Thanks for your support!

Welcome, patrons! As thanks for your support, you have access to these perks.

Patreon Exclusives

The vault. This is a sample vault that contains all the plugins, plugin settings, templates, and scripts for several workflows I demonstrate on my YouTube channel. See instructions at the very bottom of this post for how to use it.

The TTRPG vault. This is another sample vault geared towards TTRPG players. it has templates for playing and running games, monster statblocks (for Pathfinder 2e and D&D 5e) as well as some information from SRDs of various systems, formatted for Obsidian + Dataview.

Formatting Obsidian Notes Cheat Sheet. This PDF is a one-page summary of Markdown syntax and some Obsidian-specific syntax that are useful for getting started with Obsidian. Here it is in Markdown if you want to copy it into your own Obsidian vault!

Exclusive video playlist. This is a playlist of videos intended only for Patreons.

Access to Discord server. Click on this link to connect your Patreon account to Discord and join the Discord server, as well as the Patreon-only channel, to talk to me and others in the community!

A discount for Obsidian for Everyone. As patrons, you get a 20% discount to my beginners' course for Obsidian. No expiry.

Readwise-Obsidian export settings. My export settings for Readwise, although they're not too far off from the default!

Talking in Public, a Patreon-only audio podcast where I read the latest issue of my newsletter and provide additional commentary that didn't make it into the newsletter issue.

Community Projects

These are projects that aren't strictly Patreon-only, but that you are helping maintain:

pkm.social. This is a Mastodon server that I maintain with Marcus Olsson, which is free to join for anyone interested in PKM! Think Twitter, but with no ads and better in every way.

Xio's Guide to Monsters. This is a GitHub repository containing monster files for third-party publishers of material for Dungeons & Dragons 5e. The monster files are Markdown files that can be easily dropped into your Obsidian vault and queried using Dataview.

pf2e-monsters. The same as above, but for Pathfinder 2e now that I have moved away from 5e.

Deroamify. This is a GitHub repository of Python scripts that may be useful for those moving to Obsidian from Roam Research. I have a full migration guide here.

My notes. This Obsidian Publish site contains majority of my (non-confidential) notes. It's a good example of what a real, sometimes messy, personal knowledge base looks like, and it's the main way I learn in public.

mastobot. A rudimentary (but functional) bot for saving Mastodon posts to your Readwise account.

espanso. My configuration (and templates) for the text expansion tool Espanso.

csv-to-md. A CSV to Markdown converter. This Python script creates multiple Markdown files that you can drop into Obsidian, using a CSV file as input.

How to download vaults

1. Click on the link above and click Download. Save the zip file to your computer.

2. Unzip the file by double-clicking on it.

3. Open Obsidian and, in the startup screen, click Open next to "Open folder as vault".

4. Browse to where you saved the vault. Double-click on the folder named "vault" and then, when you see the folders inside it (such as scripts, people, meetings, ttrpgs, etc.), click Open.

5. When you get the message about Safe mode, click "Turn off Safe Mode".

6. You now have full access to the vault! If you're wondering where to start, click on any of the workflows in the workflows folder and follow the instructions there.

This is intended to be a sneak peak into how I do things; it is by no means "the right way" to do take notes in Obsidian. Take what you want and discard the rest! :)

Hi Nicole, First of all, I am very amazed that people like you exist and can produce such quality content and make it widely available for the community 😊🙏✨ I just started with Obsidian yesterday and quickly heard about your channel and started to dive deeper and deeper into it. It seems very very amazing and I love your ideas and explanations. But it is really a lot to take on, especially for a non-Dev person 😅 So I subscribed as a Patreon to be able to download your Vault (because I didn't manage to create what you showed on your YouTube videos by myself 😅) But now I have this very advanced Vault and I don't understand much of it to be honest 😅 I'm still watching all your videos, but it is not always easy... So I am trying to slowly adapt the Vault for my own use. However, there is something I really don't understand. Pretty much every new document created through a Template has a Drawing section on the bottom. This section only show JSON code, is it normal, or is there an issue with Excalidraw ? I updated all plugins already but didn't seem to fix it. Then there is the “Untitled.svg” could not be found."...

I’m on my IPad and having trouble downloading the TTRPG vault. Is the link for laptop or PC only? Is there a specific way I need to do it? Help

Hi! I'm sorry I missed this. In short, I'm not a fan. I went to one "onboarding" session of Anytype and it was clear it isn't for me. It's open-source, but read-only (which reduces a lot of the appeal of open-source for me), and also, Anytype notes are saved as a mixture of protobuf, JSON, and Markdown-- which means that if you had to move off Anytype, it'll be way more difficult to find a way to read all your notes. I asked if there were plans to make Anytype use existing standards, and the answer was no. I really don't want to lock-in my notes to a specific tool. I'm happy you like it, though! Personal preferences. :)

Nicole van der Hoeven

Hello Nicole. Do you know about anytype.io ? I think it is the next generation of obsidian and notion. What do you think?

Radu

Great stuff, Nicole. Your vault is insightful and easy to follow to implement best practices. Thanks, and keep up the great work! #hugefan

Eduardo Antunes

Love your content Nicole. You have been my gateway into PKM and I am so grateful. I have been an Evernote user for years but have never been able to manage my notes. Big thank you from me :)

Jonathan Foxwell

This is all freaking fantastic, thanks so much! I'm stoked I discovered your Patreon (I've watched some of your videos multiple times, but I think I'm usually watching thirty seconds, pausing to try executing whatever it is, rewinding, watching again, noticing something I screwed up...etc 😂). I just typed out a laborious question...which I managed to solve as I was trying to get the right syntax for the question itself. Lol. Love it when that works out. Thanks so much for all your work!

Kris Ripper

I keep stumbling across your content online, and it is very very helpful. Just want to say thanks!

eB2

I wanted to thank you for all the work you've done! I figured joining your Patreon was the best way to do so. Thank you!

Outflare

Hi! There is an error in "Formatting Obsidian Notes Cheat Sheet.pdf" The "Add callout" entry should read "[!NOTE]" rather than "![NOTE]".

Karl Blattmann

Hi, new here. I'm wanting to add the Updatedate.js to my own vault how do I get the quick add macro to work properly?

Kenniesha Morgan

Hey Josh! Yes! The full Bestiary monster statblocks are actually in the "TTRPG vault" already! Thanks for the encouragement. :)

Nicole van der Hoeven

These are amazing resources Nicole. Thank you so much for what you're doing for the community. Is there any plan to add the PF2e Bestiary monsters to your vault?

Josh Bissell

Hola Ricardo, muchas gracias por tu apoyo. :) I'm happy to see you here! It's great to be able to share my nerdy hobby with other people. Obrigada também et bienvenue dans la communauté Obsidian :)

Nicole van der Hoeven

Hola Nicole!! Muchas muchas gracias por tanto material! I decided to go for it and contribute to your Patreon. With the amount of value you add to each video and idea you share with us, it is totally worth it. Gracias! Just started learning how to use Obsidian, and using your workflows as a back bone is super helpful. Thanks, gracias, obrigado et merci pour l'inspiration!

Ricardo Morejon

Hi Kayode! Really appreciate that! Thank you and welcome! I'm happy to be able to help you. :)

Nicole van der Hoeven

Hi! I found myself using your videos daily and my learning and mastery through your videos have grown. Your channel is the best channel for learning Obsidian and i've been through many!

kayode

That's great! Loved doing the LYT conference. I also discovered many cool people there, speakers and attendees. What a coincidence that you also lived in the Netherlands. I wasn't born Dutch but the practicality is definitely something that has rubbed off. Thanks for the support, and welcome to my Patreon!: )

Nicole van der Hoeven

This is SO good - thank you! I recently discovered you via the Nick Milo event and I'm so glad I did. I really like your thought processes, thinking styles, etc. And, coincidentally, I lived in Leiden for a couple of years back in the late 20th century so I also like Nederlandse practicality. Keep up the great work!

Dwayne Melancon

Hi Peter! I use Readwise for everything, and I don't use Zotero, sorry. Most PDFs end up in Reader for me, and then only the highlights/notes from those are brought into Obsidian using the Obsidian Readwise Official plugin. Since I'm not importing the (potentially huge) PDFs into my Obsidian vault, size doesn't become an issue. When I'm processing a note that contains highlights, I also add citations to the note for the book/article they came from, so that I have them handy. I haven't felt the need for Zotero. Thanks for the feedback on multiple vaults! This is already on my list, but I have added your +1 to it (this helps me figure out what to make first). But let me answer you briefly here too. I have dozens of vaults, some of them personal and others for work (mostly vaults that are also GitHub repos). When you talk about remote vaults, are you talking about remote repos on GitHub, or vaults that are synced to other devices, via something like Obsidian Sync?

Nicole van der Hoeven

Currently in the process of switching over my personal and work notes and everything into Obsidian. WIth the new Readwise release pending and all that, wondering if you would be able to go over how you recommend saving documents and videos and such for later reference. Things like web pages, articles, papers, and ebooks. I know you spoke about ebooks I think being in Readwise, but wondering if you use as reference manager such as Zotero? And how that workflow is integrated into Obsidian. Example being, as an angineer, I may collect product data sheets from websites or as PDF, along with manuals, plan sets, specifications, etc. I was initially dropping everything into Obsidian, and that seems to sort of almost work. But I am getting concerned with the size of the vault over time. As you might be able to tell, the scattered thoughts above are sort of where I am at right now in the process, just trying to sort it all out in my head. Should also add, that if you have existing vaults and/or multiple vaults, not finding the documentation on the Obsidian site to be super useful in explaining it all. A video on setting up sync with more than one vault, say a work and personal vault, would be useful I think. I believe some of the confusion, if I have this figured out, is in how the remote vault relates to my existing vault I am linking. It becomes more confusing when the remote vault name is the same as the local vault. I believe I have it configured correctly but not 100% sure.

Peter Venkman

Hey Felicity, you're not being dense! You can certainly do that! You could do the reverse too, which is to copy your vault into mine. There are still others who prefer to manually recreate what I've done in my vault into theirs, but that is a longer and more tedious process. Choose whatever makes sense to you. :)

Nicole van der Hoeven

Really happy to hear that, Felicity! Welcome -- to the Obsidian community and to the Patreon! Glad to have you here and to hear I could help you. :)

Nicole van der Hoeven

I'm sorry - I think I'm being very dense - I have followed all the instructions in your post of 5 May 2022 'Download my sample vault + Q&A thread' and read the files in the workflow folder. My question is - do I simply copy the folders and their contained files, templates and plugins, to my own vault, if I want to replicate your set up?

Felicity

Hi Nicole I'm relatively new to Obsidian (having used a range of notes apps that never really did all I needed them to). I probably wouldn't have made the leap, if it wasn't for your superb videos - thanks!

Felicity

Sounds like you got it working, so that's great! The scripts in the sample vault were meant to be used within the sample vault, so it's hard to tell you what you need to do in your own vault without seeing it myself. Have you considered just starting with the sample vault and modifying it from there? That way, everything will start out already working with all the settings and plugins required.

Nicole van der Hoeven

*templater language of ....

lostinafog

OK, so after fiddling with settings and closing and restarting getting the heading field in the Person template to resolve to the name of the file is now working. But the dataview script that pulls in the list of meetings with that person still was resolving to this in the created file: "where contains (attendees, "Untitled"). If I change the template to use the dataview language of this.file.name instead of the template language of tp.file.title in the template it resolves correctly. No idea if there is a downside to doing that. But closing the loop here.

lostinafog

Ok, so it sounds like you're trying to replicate something in my vault, but in your vault. The reason that I decided to release a whole vault, rather than just separate templates, is because there are a lot of settings and plugins that might change how something works, and by publishing the whole vault, people don't have to worry about setting those things up. Unfortunately, it can also make it difficult to troubleshoot, since I'm not sure what settings or plugins you have or don't have compared to my vault. For starters, do you have the Templater plugin in your vault too? If you do, maybe you could compare the Templater settings in your vault vs. mine. Let me know how you go! :)

Nicole van der Hoeven

Sorry for not being clear. I'm creating a new meeting note by control clicking the meetings folder. The title in the body of the meeting note created from the template line " # [[<% tp.file.title %>]] " resolves to "untitled" when I create a new note in my vault and yours using the same meeting note template. In your vault, when I then change the title of the note up above, that line in the body of the note changes to match the title I put in. In my vault it remains as "Untitled". Everything else in the newly created note is fine in both vaults.

lostinafog

Hi David! 1 - Not sure I understand you correctly. Are you creating a meeting note and then changing the filename in the File Explorer pane in Obsidian or somewhere else? 2 - Are you talking about `# [[<% tp.file.title %>]]` ? It's not actually capitalized -- the theme that I'm using in the vault makes all H1 headings look like they're capitalized, but they're not. Did you see this issue in a note that was in the vault when you downloaded it, or in a note you created yourself?

Nicole van der Hoeven

Hi Nicole--I like the folder actions, but can't get it to work properly. In your vault when I Control-click on Meetings or People I get the new note and when I change the title it changes in the note. But when I do it my vault and change the title of the new note it doesn't change in the body of the note. I've tried to check through all the settings but must be missing something. Can you point me to a possible solution? I also had a weird thing where that command in the body of the note for the title doesn't work when it was capitalized (TP.FILE.TITLE) but did when I put it in lower case.

lostinafog

Great.. thanks for your response! I can see those in the explorer. I haven't really seen all videos or help pages about the script & automation. My dev-brain is really excited about trying some weird automation but this office workload is keeping me away from it. I will reach out if I get stuck. Thanks!

Vikram

Hey Vikram! Are you looking at it within Obsidian? Obsidian can't open .js files, so you'll have to open up the vault in a text editor or IDE to see the scripts (you should also see them in your file explorer). :)

Nicole van der Hoeven

Hi Nicole, thanks for sharing this! When I open the vault, I don't see the script files. When I click "scripts" folder, icon changes with a blank line below. Cursor popup says 7 files, but files list does not appear. Am I missing some setting?

Vikram

Hi Caylee! Yes, that's why I put the "This is in progress!" warning at the top. :) I did do a video about this here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T2Aeaq4sk7M However, the version in the vault is more updated (better than the one in the video) and so I definitely do need to finish those instructions! Thank you for the reminder!

Nicole van der Hoeven

Thank you so much for creating and sharing this! For Goal-setting and reviews (under workflows), are the instructions unfinished? I has 1. Fill out My Core Principles and then 2. with nothing next to it. It would be amazing if you had a video that walked through this.

Caylee Grey

Hi there. Only on tablets? Does it work on your computer? Could you tell me what the error says?

Nicole van der Hoeven

there is an parsing error on tablets when creating a session, the data does not populate correctly

sprv

So nice of you, Jen! I really appreciate your support. I'm happy to be able to share things with you and learn from you too!

Nicole van der Hoeven

Love your approach to all kinds of things, Nicole and really looking forward to learning from you. I appreciate your clarity and am so happy that you have a Patreon so we don't have to duplicate work you have already done -- and we can support you in this small way!

Jen Hill

Yay!! I'm so glad I'm not the only one! I had second thoughts about even talking about how I use Obsidian for TTRPGs because I thought it was too niche. Turns out there are a lot of us. :) A master class is an interesting idea. Are there any specific things about your campaign planning/note-taking that you wish you could automate?

Nicole van der Hoeven

Hi Nicole! Thank you so much for sharing this! I've been falling down the Youtube rabbit hole for the last 3 days and your templates and automations are exactly what I've been looking to do for my own campaigns that I'm running. If you ever wanted to teach a master class on scripting and automations for TTRPG I would absolutely want to attend.

Dutchie

Hmmm, that's good to know! Have you already seen these videos? About my notes as a GM and as a player: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3pt6_srUZ7U and about my brain attic: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fblwp-Uop_8 I love making videos about TTRPGs, but I want to make sure I show what you'd like to see, if those previous videos don't hit the spot. Is it setting up an entirely new world/campaign? Would you like to see me prep for a session?

Nicole van der Hoeven

I'd love to see how you set up for being a GM, adding PCs, Factions, and organization of GM information. I think that's the thing I most struggle with

Christopher Taylor

That's great, Jamie! Thank you so much for the support. :) Glad to hear I've been able to help!

Nicole van der Hoeven

Hi Nicole! Found your work as I'm just getting started in Obsidian and Knowledge Management as a whole, and this helps out soooo much! Thanks for helping out the community, you're awesome!

Jamie Sutanto

Hey, that's awesome! Those are my two most used workflows too! Have you had a chance to check out the template yet? If there's anything else you'd like to see there, let me know!

Nicole van der Hoeven

Thank you for the templates! I'm definitely someone who needs to adopt someone's established workflow to see how it works or doesn't for me and make changes from there. And my two most "in need" use cases for notes are D&D notes for a new campaign I'm starting to DM and taking better meeting notes throughout the work day.

Steven Smith

I feel you!! I have a game I'm playing in, in about 45 minutes, and then I need to prep for my own game tomorrow! Hey, let me know if you run into issues with the template. :)

Nicole van der Hoeven

T-3hrs to prep tonight's session and I jump on reorganizing my files. :-) Thank you for the video and templates!
