AMA | the dark mode video

Do you have any questions about Sabrina's most controversial video yet? Leave a comment and we'll try to answer them in the aftershow podcast we are recording this Thursday.

AMA | the dark mode video

Just saying I want the release of Sabrina talking through the data

maria cardoso

Did you find any research on people who wear glasses regularly versus those who don’t? My glasses apparently have a blue light filter built into them which the normal eye does not

Hope

In your research for this video, did you come across much on how effective blue light filters are? Obviously they're meant to help with eye strain but can they impact readability?

Ella

what would clouds do to deserve being shouted at and what did you mean by clouds? (icons?)

Igor Matkowski

I don’t recall if it was mentioned so I might need to rewatch it: Does the brightness/contrast level of the screen (whether monitor or mobile) have any effect on the preference? I have known people who never change their setting and then complain about the screen being either too bright (when in light mode) or too dark (when in dark mode). Yes, it is an easy setting change - if you know it is there!

Kim Ho

After doing all the research for this video, what is your phone set to right now?

Lloyd

Joe uses dark mode, therefore, dark mode wins. Also, when are we getting the Sabrina's cut with all the boring data in the middle, I need my spreadsheets and graphs bro

Pablo Rodriguez

Did your research uncover anything about social pressure (or the reaction to it) influencing people's choice of using light or dark mode? I know that for me, way back when I was in school, so many of the dude-bros who wanted to exert their computer knowledge superiority over the rest of us extolled the virtue of dark mode, and so to react against that I decided to only use light mode. I've used light mode for so long now that it is what I prefer, even when being on the computer all day for work, and all evening for myself. Light mode, to me, just seems more natural and easy to read. Dark mode seems to me, since I use it so infrequently, to require so much more eye-effort to read.

iPhones do have a grayscale mode that might be what you’re talking about

Kevin Pham

Is there such thing as like a "gray" mode that's like an in-between of the two and would there potentially be any benefit to that? Like a soft gray background with white/black text?

Alexanderhyperbeam

With this new knowledge of mode differences; would you change the main mode that you use? I know that I've sometimes had eye spots and strain in my daily use, I tried using light mode in a few more places (and quickly gave up because its so uncomfortable to me personally).

I would love to use the light mode, but it is so unnecessarily bright on my phone. Most of the websites and apps I use (VS Code IDE, MobaXterm) have way better experience in dark mode than light mode, but maybe I am biased. My question to you is however, does the duration of you watching a screen matter, when you are choosing between light mode and dark mode? I am in software development, which means that I am staring at a screen for more than 7 hours a day. I use dark mode, since I feel it is easier on my eyes. Would there be any advantage in switching to light mode?

Abhi

How long is the original footage from the middle bit (graphs! graphs! graphs!) before it was all sped up?
