2024-01-31 11:02:03 +0000 UTCloved the new video! I was chatting with my wife about it and she's a WWI scholar with a PhD in history. You touch colonialism several times in the video, but another aspect that is so fascinating about "rules" of language with regards to official government languages and bodies etc, is how it interacts with nationalism. In fact I once asked her if she had to break away from the standard period of 1914-1918 for WWI, what years would she instead use? her answer was to start it around 1881 because this is the first time we see nations on a vast scale begin to standardise language and enforce that standardisation resulting in a homogoneity of language and culture. And it is that enforcement of standard language upon which nationalism becomes recursive. but also - spelling bee website fun!
